in this particular case the components will be exposed to the sun and that will degrade the plastic over time, and that is something that wont happen to wood :)
the x230 is great but the plastics are crumbling so I thought it is a good chance to get something with a better screen.
the framework feels cheap, even though it costs a lot, Im pretty sure it wont last for as long I bought it to last without the need for replacement parts.
in my experience going to the store almost always costs more (but then again I only make simple single material stuff that dont require crazy equipment)
To give this rack as an example, steel front racks are going for 100eur++ (check those surlys lol) and for what I want (which needs someone that mades custom racks) will easily go above 200eur.. (the plan is to make it with at least half)
for me its not just the fun.. the reasons are mainly ideological. (making, repurposing, reusing over consuming)
to grue: its mainly because i have the tools and time and i can make it cheaper than buying it (buying things ready spoils the fun for me)
also i cant find a frame mounted front rack unless I pay someone to make it custom

No but I rebooted the system after the change. do still need to update it regardless the reboot?
no, I just removed them with the live cd and repartitioned it (Im assuming its doing the same thing under the hood?)
editing the /etc/fstab didnt work (I just changed the path but not sure if the uuid plays any part) but ill give the rm/mkdir part a go
the command returns my user dir and a lost+found dir
yes it is a symlink to /var/home

Im curious on why you are using zfs snapshots? (i never used them myself as I handle my backups with duplicity)

if its sealed airtight why do you need to replace them every 6 months?

alu is a no go as it cant be repaired easily. (and its also weaker than steel in my experience)
in the end i want to easily put 30kgs on a frame mounted rack that is made from me.

alu is to weak and not a good alternative to cromoly (i had the pizza rack from specialized fail on me on heavy load)
