I think his initial comments were that, but they're moving in the wrong direction (for somebody against the pipeline that is). He's moved from just suggesting Indigenous consultation, to framing it as a project that will make Canada stronger and has support in Manitoba.

In terms of playing politics, I suspect his phrasing will go over well with Manitobans. I think I'm just personally against the direction that we're moving in, and I have growing worries that it will indeed get built based on these statements.

Not OP, but possibly because the Liberals continue to approve shipping military equipment to Israel. The url is specifically about the genocide in Gaza.

I agree it's odd without context.

I think it might be a deeper cultural problem than that. I suspect Carney appeals to more Canadians specifically because he is more neoliberal and closer to the Conservatives than his predecessor. Just assuming that people only like him because of Pollievre is, in my opinion, a bit dangerous because it glosses over the need for deeper cultural change.

Broadly speaking, we live in a democracy with a strong 4th estate, so Carney's support speaks to the ideals of many Canadians. And THAT is the problem.

I know he's the most popular premiere in the country, and I also acknowledge that Obby Khan would be infinitely worse, so at the risk of being lambasted... I really, really don't like Kinew's policies.

The huge gas tax holiday only helped those rich enough to own a car, not those who needed it most. It also encouraged destructive behavior like driving, which fits with his current soft position on pipelines. He even lobbied the federal government under Trudeau to cancel the carbon rebate program, which helped low income Canadians the most, and reduced emissions.

On top of all of that, his main campaign promise to fix Healthcare has gone disastrously. Healthcare is in a worse state than ever.

I realize this is a bit of a rant, and may be out of place, but I wanted to give Manitoba a bit more engagement here on Lemmy. Take care everybody, and thanks for reading!
