There are still security holes you'd need to address when clients are connecting. Websockets are helpful when you use them correctly. But they require some work regardless of the size of your site either way. I'd just avoid them if you really don't need them.
You could get all that without the heavy burden of websockets by just rending HTML on the server (MPA) and using view transitions for a more native-like feel.
In general, I would avoid anything websockets related unless you have a lot of money to scale it. Otherwise, a large amount of traffic connecting via sockets will likely take down your whole site.

Like you said, they appear to be attempting to keep a backup of a lot of data using third-party services, I'm guessing so that, in theory, even after their death, this data will be available... forever?

lol people on HackerNews tend to do this a lot and it really does get annoying. it forces the reader to process what you're trying to say unnecessarily.
yup and when you DO catch it spitting out nonsense. it"ll say "oh you right, let me change that".. 🙄 like, why do I have to tell you that you're wrong about something? You should already know it's wrong and fix it without me ever pointing it out.
It really irks me when people change the titles of the articles they link to to try to fit their narrative. Because sadly people dont really click through to the article. Just share the real title and give your commentary on the comments.
Been complaining about the RSS bots for years. They pollute feeds and search results too. If people want to see RSS feed content, just subscribe to it in your RSS reader.
