Cool, thanks for the feedback! Once I got my deck, I immediately flashed Bazzite on it, for no good reason, honestly. Mostly because it was the hot new thing and wanted to try it out, but in doing so I never even tried SteamOS. Because of this, I was left wondering what was wrong with the original OS, hence this post. I'll probably give SteamOS a whirl later this month just to see.

Nah, I want to keep using it as a gaming device. I changed the original OS to Bazzite because I absolutely need to flash alternate OSes on everything I can, the voices in my head tell me to. But joking aside, your question remains pertinent: why change the system? I honestly never gave SteamOS a fair shake and I probably should.

At 16, your son's body is still developing and a diet of 5 cigs per day definitely could be hazardous to his development, so you are right to be concerned. A child's body needs very different nutrients compared to an adult, so it should be your job to give him the nourishment he needs and deserves. So next time you see your underage son eating a cigarette, make sure he gets a unit of the strongest alcohol you have at home per every 3 cigarettes he eats, for his health.

Nope, it's very much a YouTube/Google/Alphabet thing. Here's a short explanation (taken from this page):

In 2025, YouTube started rolling out a new streaming protocol, known as SABR, which breaks down the video into smaller chunks whose internal URLs dynamically change rather than provide one whole static URL. This is problematic because it prevents downloaders (such as yt-dlp) from being able to download YouTube videos at resolutions higher than 360p due to only detecting format code 18 (which is the only format code available that doesn't use SABR).[11] So far, this issue has only affected the web client, so one workaround would be to use a different client, such as tv_embedded (where SABR has not yet been rolled out to), so for instance in yt-dlp you could add --extractor-args "youtube:player_client=tv_embedded" to use that client. It is not known how long this workaround will work as intended, as YouTube rolls out SABR to more and more clients.

Anything that integrates yt-dlp, honestly. I used to use Freetube exclusively on my PC, but now I find myself downloading every video I want to watch because of Youtube's stupid SABR requests. Basically, Youtube forces a 5 second pause on the video you're watching for no good reason, seemingly at random, too, and this seems to affect NewPipe and its forks and yes, Freetube as well. It's super annoying.

I watch quite a bit of anime and a lot of subtitles seem to be in a format that includes advanced features such as stretching/shrinking text, rotation, karaoke effects and what have you. I think the sub format is actually called .ass or .ssa, but don't quote me on that.

Anywho, I tried watching some random anime a few years back and was using VLC at the time. VLC detected the subtitles, but couldn't do anything outside of just displaying them. It couldn't do the advanced effects. So, I switched to MPV which just worked and have been using it ever since. As I said, this was a few years back and VLC probably can do advanced subtitles at this point, but eh. I'm too used to MPV now.

The following years are really going to suck for gaming. Sony is no longer cool with people owning their games, similar with Nintendo, who still do sell physical cartridges, only just some of them will actually contain the game. As for Xbox, it's straight up imploding right now. The only ownership-friendly option right now seems to be PC with stores like GOG, itch.io or Zoom (no, not that one).

However, all of the platforms mentioned still have one problem in common, which is likely going to persist for the next few years: hardware has gotten ridiculously expensive thanks to the AI chip crisis. Right now the smart move seems to be to stick with the hardware you have until the chip crisis blows over, unless you are comfortable with paying through the nose for a new PC or console.
