Duress PIN/Password
GrapheneOS provides users with the ability to set a duress PIN/Password that will irreversibly wipe the device (along with any installed eSIMs) once entered anywhere where the device credentials are requested (on the lockscreen, along with any such prompt in the OS).
The wipe does not require a reboot and cannot be interrupted. It can be set up at Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Duress Password in the owner profile. Duress PIN is solely used for PIN entry and duress password is solely used for password entry. Both a duress PIN and password are mandatory to enable the feature to account for different profiles that may have different unlock methods. Duress PIN will also wipe the device when entered as the two-factor fingerprint unlock PIN but not currently when entered as the SIM PIN.
Note that if the duress PIN/Password is the same as the actual unlock method, the actual unlock method always takes precedence, and therefore no wipe will occur.
Yeah, but a lot of people nowadays only use a phone, and they don't download their software from a random website, but they use a front end (e.g. Play Store/App Store), so they don't need to get accustomed to it
I agree, but only until the part you mention how people should install their software. And that's simply because I don't think that people should install random .exes or .debs from the internet, because repositories are:
Easier to find software within: you've got a one-stop-shop for all/most of your most important software
They're inherently more secure as the software should (emphasis on should) be checked by maintainers or the people who upload software onto them
Software updates are much easier to enroll, as they are treated as system updates
Not a german national, but I'm learning it at school, and they say that if you go to a german-speaking region, it's better to say "chef", because "führer" is still connected to that guy
Hi, NixOS user here. I find it a bit difficult to maintain, which is quite ironic, considering that it tries to solve that issue, but it is because I still haven't got my head around most of the concepts, like flakes and such. Because of that, I might be jumping ship and go towards pure Arch or CachyOS. I forgot to add that I extensively used Arch for about 2 years before going over NixOS. With that in mind, I'm not saying that it's a bad distro, but I reaaally miss ArchWiki, and until NixOS doesn't have a good enough wiki (or me starting to code something😂) I think that I'll be on Arch
