there's one of these for literally every meme ever huh?

PatMustard@feddit.uk · 35 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Given how long the xkcd has been around I think the car is referencing the comic

sparky1337@ttrpg.network · 8 pts · 2y (1 reply)

2005 for those wondering.

kspatlas@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 2y

Think they mean the specific comic

eager_eagle@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y

I'm almost sure they're procedurally generated for some time now

lugal@sopuli.xyz · 9 pts · 2y

I knew I read it somewhere, it didn't remember it to be an xkcd comic

Excrubulent@slrpnk.net · 15 pts · 2y (2 replies)

It's even more boring than that - the license plate system already searches ambiguous characters. It's almost like this issue comes up even without people gaming the system.

lars@lemmy.sdf.org · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Oh like so I bet

if license plate person thinks they have 1 on they plate {
  do check to see if it’s \
    actually == i
}
Excrubulent@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 2y

Something like that, yeah, I think the system automatically checks.. Although this has 8 ambiguous characters, so actually you could have 256 cars with virtually indistinguishable plates, which is a lot. I believe custom plates have an approval process, and I wonder if this would be part of it. Like, "Yeah, no more black lincoln town cars with all I's and 1's, something's up."

son_named_bort@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2y (2 replies)

This is why I don't have a tag on my car. Can't track my license plate if I don't have a license plate. It's foolproof!

wheeldawg@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

This is even dumber than the morons who think any plate that's days "private" has any hope of passing any kind of check.

lars@lemmy.sdf.org · 5 pts · 2y

If all license plates said “private” or “1ii11i1i” they’d never catch us all

EpicFailGuy@lemmy.world · 49 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Has anyone posted the related XKCD yet?

noooo? no one? OK .. i guess it's my turn

According to the timestamps, you were 3 hours too late, sorry dude... https://startrek.website/comment/6045561

Pretty sure the database actually treats them as the same character. So not sure if someone can't have a different arrangement of I and 1 or if they all just get investigated if one of them commits a crime.

lambipapp@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 2y (1 reply)

This is like the old SC2 pros hiding their nicknames when practicing on the ladder

PraiseTheSoup@lemm.ee · 9 pts · 2y

Nowadays we just call that "smurfing", and it's a plague on every online game with a ranking system.

ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social · 8 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Can't say too much but god I hate this so much. Used to work a call center and someone had a username that was all 1,l,I s and there was no way to easily identify between those 3 characters. For someone to verify who they were they needed to tell us their username and some other info. So I had to waste nearly 30 fucking minutes dealing with this stupid shit before we could proceed forward and we couldn't just DC the person.

lars@lemmy.sdf.org · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

you sure it wasn’t this guy?

ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social · 3 pts · 2y

That is funny but not as bad.

Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2y

It would be funnier if the license plate was "*DROPTABLE"

mhague@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y

Can't get DDoSed if they can't figure out your username

ShortFuse@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y

I looked up the plate (TLC records are public info) and it's still in service.

Neat.
