One of my summer favorites: Iced coffee + orange juice + ginger

The coffee sunrise post earlier reminded me of one of my summer favorites (I just suck at taking pretty pictures but I think you'll get the idea):

  • a strong coffee (this one is 125ml from an aeropress but a double shot of espresso/lungo also works very well)
  • about 3-4 medium sized ice cubes (enough to still have ice after pouring the hot coffee)
  • ~120ml orange juice (adjust to taste and/or the size of your cup)
  • 10-20ml of nice spicy ginger juice (if the bottle says "don't drink pure", you got the right stuff)
  • pour the coffee slowly onto the ice cubes
  • Wait a bit so it gets nicely chilled.

I like slowly sipping about half of the top layer (it's basically an iced coffee at that point) before stirring and enjoying the final mix

Dunno if there is a name for that recipe, I just combined two stolen ingredient ideas (I saw a youtube video about espresso+orange juice once and a local café had an extremely tasty cold-drip based drink that included ginger)

Apparently it is called an iced bumblebee coffee, never tried it myself but it seems like it is very much a thing

andkit@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 3y

Oh, thank you. I'll have to remember that name. Might help sell the idea when I next try to get someone to taste-test it 😅

I have very little experience in drinking coffee outside of basic coffee, so I'm not sure if this is a joke or not.

andkit@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 3y (2 replies)

I swear it's not a joke - I do actually drink this. And the two friends I got to try it at least haven't sued me for poisoning them, so it can't be that bad

Pegatron@kbin.social · 16 pts · 3y

I've tried coffee lemonade and found it a pretty suitable emetic. This seems like it could be even worse, cheers.

Are you sure your friends are not already plotting a revenge? Jokes, you have good friends there!

I’m going to threaten my local coffee shop with this wish me luck

andkit@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 3y

lol, good luck, I can already see them grabbing their pitchforks. And if they do let you live, ask them if they have any crazy recipes of their own and share with us ;)

"Sir the asteroid and the alien armada will be here at roughly the same time - in about 20 minutes."

sigh Fine, I'll have one of those . . . coffee . . orange juice ginger things. I mean - what the hell, right?

Absolutely cursed. Gonna try.

If you want to make this even more monstrous you can try brewing into a cocktail shaker over ice and shaking the crap out of it so you'll get a good couple of inches of froth on top when you add it to the orange juice.

Neato@kbin.social · 6 pts · 3y (1 reply)

For really good foam add an egg white to your cocktail shaker, before the ice. Definitely cool the coffee down first.

SangriaFerret@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 3y

Nah, keep it hot. Egg drop coffee.

This is either a work of singular art or complete and utter madness.

There's only one course of action: will try no matter the cost.

Also, thank you for using the metric system, fellow global citizen.

This is either a work of singular art or complete and utter madness.

Some would say all art requires at least a touch of madness.

I am trying to imagine what coffee + orange juice taste like, but I really can't

andkit@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 3y

Well the orange juice is certainly the dominant flavor and the coffee adds some nice bitter notes to it. The ginger then brings a nice spicy kick if you like that sort of thing in your food/drinks (I do, obviously)

I'd never have thought of mixing coffee and orange on my own. Same with espresso tonic. But it turns out I like both Or maybe my brain just suffers (more) damage when the room temperature exceeds 27°C 🤷

dingus@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3y

I'm honestly curious enough that I'm tempted to go out and buy some OJ to try...

Corngood@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 3y

Orange juice is one thing that completely ruins the taste of coffee for me. Like if I get served both for breakfast, I have to drink the coffee first, or at least get a good palate cleanse.

Given that, I find this fascinating.

I think you may have just created one of the first memes of this community.

I'm going to make this tomorrow and toast it to you

bestnerd@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 3y

No way this doesn’t give you an ulcer from all the acid

HidingCat@kbin.social · 5 pts · 3y

I've never been a fan of flavoured coffees (only some kind of creamer and sugar are added at most), and adding two strongly tasting flavours to coffee seems errr....

I was wondering if it was something I missed, but I guess the consensus here isn't in favour of the drink either. xD

pipler@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Coffee + orange juice is a thing according to MorganDrinksCoffee, and coffee + ginger is a thing in my local cuisine. I...might try making some variation of this. For science.

profz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3y

I've had it at my local cafe, absolutely recommend it super refreshing.

BlovedMadman@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 3y (2 replies)

I'm glad I inspired you, and you have inspired me to (attempt at least) make your creation.

Thank you.

andkit@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Hehe, don't thank me yet. The general consensus seem to be that it's an abomination from the deepest circles of hell ;)

BlovedMadman@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 3y

Don't threaten me with a good time

lildictator@feddit.nl · 3 pts · 3y

Fuck all these haters. I'm going to try this tomorrow and once I recover from the stomach cramps it will inevitably give me I will post the results.

Dravin@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3y

If it was a super chocolatey coffee I could almost see this working given chocolate, orange, and ginger will play well together.

RBWells@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3y

Now I would reject this straight away, except that I like cold brew, fresh orange juice, and Topo Chico. It just tastes like fizzy smoky orange and is lovely.

The ginger I can't quite imagine but coffee and orange are more compatible than I could have imagined without trying it.

Brainsnap@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3y

The idea of this sounds bad initially, but I Love espresso tonics so I can definitely see this working.

DrKevorkian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3y

Cup full of ice to the top + 1/2 cup OJ + double shot of espresso has been my go-to for more than a year. This is good stuff.

I guess this is one way to see if you are immune to death.
