For me, having a team lunch is not a “break”. I get back to the office feeling like I haven’t stopped working. Went straight back outside for a 15 min walk to reset.

BigWhiteDog@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y

That's like the good old "lunch meeting"

No, that's just a meeting you've scheduled at an inconsiderate time. I'm still going to have my lunch break

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

I remember someone tried to do that to me but I left early and didn’t do the lunch meeting.

I think it’s so unfair to do a department meeting I’m at lunchtime in a scheduled day where there’s no other times for your own break.

I know we don’t often get together as a whole department but I’m not willing to sacrifice that time to do that.

Dalek_Thal@aussie.zone · 16 pts · 3y (5 replies)

Uni marks came in. Somehow an A slipped onto my "barely passing" academic transcript. Also I got a high pass in the subject I thought I was going to fail, and a C in the third one.

I'm shocked, I might actually graduate this year

MisssDarylC@aussie.zone · 15 pts · 3y (10 replies)

I've started an 8 week challenge for fitness and healthy eating and fuck me, the amount of admin involved is exhausting. I've been so enthusiastic but the more I've had to prepare for it food wise, the more my enthusiasm fades. I'll still go to the group training session tonight but I'm genuinely already exhausted.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Food prep can take a lot of time, especially when it is new things. It usually gets quicker as you get used to what you are doing, but will always take longer than grabbing something quick or pre-prepared. But it does pay you back in improved health and energy. You're worth the extra time.

MisssDarylC@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Definitely agree, it'll just take time to find a balance and I'm good with it. I'll get used to it eventually.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I’ve seen a couple of my friends who have a strict diet weigh their food and document it all and also having to guess the content or rating of what they’re eating.

It took a bit of time before they got to eating their food and it was only a small snack of chocolate or a little cupcake.

I admire their dedication to it all though.

MisssDarylC@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Oh it's totally admirable, I'm just aiming for balance but to still enjoy food! I definitely agree though, it'll just take time to get used to it and I'm in it now.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Go you! It can be pretty daunting to take on a big challenge like this but it's worth it if you're determined. I admire you for including group training sessions!

MisssDarylC@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

It's a great way to be kept accountable you know? Having a whole group to show progress to. It's one group session a week and then I've got to incorporate two-three additional sessions.

jezbeenz@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Good on you! I'm trying to worry less about food and more about just being more active these days. I hate counting calories, just trying to lay off the takeaways and junk.

Goddess_Amaterasu@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (2 replies)

You need to get on the best diet in the world… the feijoas diet. Where all you eat is feijoas 😜

::: spoiler my cross stitch project :::

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Good work (both the cross stitch and the spoiler!).

Is it going to be framed, or finished in some other way?

oztrin@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Yes that's the next step, washing and ironing and framing.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

You are close. The link needs to be on a seperate line in the middle, and the text you want to show should be written after spoiler.

If you make the link and highlight it, then hit the spoiler tag (the triangle with ! in the centre) it should put it in the right place, and you can replace the second "spoiler" with new text if you want.

baconmash@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Highlight ! to ) and click the spoiler button, or use this. I think what's missing from your code is you need to start a new line after spoiler and )

racked up 50 days alcohol free as of today, no pressing reason just wanted a break and a minor challenge to see through to the end. funnily enough the social drinking part was easy and had some fun nights out on 0 alcohol beers. the at home turning brain off and playing video games sipping soju is what i missed.

didn't experience any actual benefits, which is exactly like when i quit coffee for a couple months and nothing happened just mildly less enjoyment

jezbeenz@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Sucks to hear you didn't have any positive effects :( I'm doing dry July and feeling way better, sleeping better and lot more energy and motivation.

OIP@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

that's awesome! i think taking a break is for sure good, even just psychologically, so still glad i did it. for me nothing much improves my motivation other than just doing things and then it starts to snowball real quick.

Stayed late at work by accident and busted my hump trying to catch my "backup" bus that gets me home relatively early. Waited here since the PTV app said "arriving in 5 minutes" then it counted down and said "Now" for about two minutes, then ticked over to 21 minutes. No bus went by in either direction.

Also this bus stop I'm at doesn't have a bench or anything.

Oh, I just remembered I missed my normal bus to work this morning, too. Looks like I've got a case of the Mondays!

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Buses are the biggest trolls of the PTV network. That includes the "smart" buses. I've had the exact same thing happen to me before too, in the cold dark rain. Don't miss it at all.

Once a colleague was dropping me off at a bus stop early and we saw my ("smart ") bus just about to leave well ahead of what the app said, and when I explained how unreliable the things are my colleague just gunned it and beat the bus in heavy traffic to drop me off a few stops later so I would definitely get on that bus.

Cendana@lemm.ee · 4 pts · 3y

Dumb bus*

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

Ugh I hate that. Happened when I was waiting for a tram to Caulfield on Saturday. It's like ticking down and then ... Nothing.

Also I wish there was somewhere where we can tell ptv to get seats or whatever at bus stops. My local one doesn't have a seat, which sure sucks but eh, but trying to get on the bus is annoying and they can only lean down so far. Feels like I'm taking two steps to get on it.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Heavy things lifted. Miss Meow is very confused about the point of it all, but has also done her own exercise routine, involving stalk and pounce of a small piece of cardboard and a limbo across the weight bench and under the barbell. She is now suggesting it would be a good time to eat some protein.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Props for lifting heavy things near the end of the day! Go raven!

Update from my post yesterday about the disability medical assessment I had for my disability claim, for anyone that saw that.

Had the appointment. The assessor was nice, I was so nervous I was stuttering. I don't even have a stutter, so that was weird. Took all of 10-15 minutes and I was exhausted after.

Now I just wait I guess. The estimated completion time is 4th of August, so if it takes that long I think I'll get around $2k in backpay, which is enough to pay off two of my debts and get things back on track(do they still backpay the difference in payment for people currently on jobseeker? Actually unsure on that.)

The suspense is killing me. I should just avoid thinking about it, but that extra $400ish a fortnight would be life changing. And not having to make myself bedridden going to disability employment services appointments every other week.

Minecraft has been a good distraction. Been digging big holes to calm down. There's something Zen about it. Except that I keep burrowing in to giant cave systems and having to explore them for loot and glory, which is less relaxing.

I've finally put a bow on a document I've been working on for months. Technology changes quickly and frequently so it has needed a bunch of changes since I started but I'm finally calling it "document correct as of date of writing" and will present it to my team tomorrow.

It was my largest piece of work and a huge weight off my shoulders - or rather will be after I present it to my team tomorrow. Now I can focus on thinking about what comes next for the 35 days until my holiday. Good times.

There is a new coffee community that has just been created. I believe as Melbourneans we need to make sure we go and add our collective coffee wisdom.

6368_39162@lemm.ee · 6 pts · 3y (12 replies)

Fetch your pitchforks, I don’t drink the stuff

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y

We'll just keep that quietly to ourselves here. Just, don't go announcing such blasphemy in the coffee community, you could ruin our reputation!

baconmash@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y

^🫣^

anobium_punctatum@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (6 replies)

Neither, it's vile.

Love the smell, but the taste is awful.

bull@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y (4 replies)

I shared that opinion for the first 35 years of my life. It turns out I just hadn't tried good coffee (espresso). There are so many ways to have coffee too.. I did a bit of experimenting, started out with lattes with a couple of sugars and moved on to stronger brews over a few months. I'm not pounding triple shot long blacks or anything but I do love me a nice cup of Joe these days.

Never ever touch instant coffee. I'm not even sure how people call that stuff coffee.

I also thought beer was disgusting until I was 26.

mayotized@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y

I can do it, but my stomach hates it when I drink coffee.

6368_39162@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Rather like that coffee icecream with the choc almonds in it

Mittens_meow@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

Coffee gelato is my go to. I hate coffee as a drink unless it’s sugary Starbucks gunk!

I only use it when very sleep deprived and struggle at work. I get shaky and heart palpitations

RosaliePreistley@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Instant works is cheap and put tumeric pepper honey and soy in it tastes not bad. I gave trying to have fancy coffee at home years ago. Saved a fortune on buying average stove top stuff. It's still not a huge step up from instand imo compared to the great stuff you can get everywhere in Melbourne.

I still have some perculator coffee and a moka pot of course for when people come over.

6368_39162@lemm.ee · 4 pts · 3y

I don’t dislike it, but it makes me feel peculiar. Basically just don’t see what all the fuss is about and can’t be bothered.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

same here. Can't even stand the smell. Don't @me with "but you haven't tried the right blend of cat crap organic hippie toe-picked steam froth!" I hate coffee and it's not going into my mouth,.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Yum. I think we need to declare this day Monday 10th of July POULTRY DAY 🦃🐔🐓🐣🐤🐥🐦🕊🦅🦆🦢🦉🦤🦩🦚🦜🥚🍳

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

That's an interesting dish, and it got me thinking, the only time I ever have quail eggs is in hotpot. What's the difference/benefit to them over chicken eggs? I imagine they are way more expensive.

tarciosaraiva@mastodon.au · 2 pts · 3y

@Force_majeure122 they are more expensive if you compare them weight wise. Nutritionally speaking AFAIK they are higher in just about every nutrition factor compared to a chicken egg but given that you don't really eat them every day it's more of a novelty anyway.

We used to keep quails at home when I was a kid and had their eggs often. Go great with salads

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Hehe nice one. The eggs really so sound like a pain to peel being small and all.

Was it tasty?

tarciosaraiva@mastodon.au · 3 pts · 3y

@Duenan very tasty 😋 I honestly don't know why the technique I use with normal chicken eggs to easily peel them doesn't work with quail eggs.

Technique: boil the eggs starting with boiling water then rinse them in cold water. Works every time.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (2 replies)

Hahaha.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

started watching "from" on Stan. suitably intrigued, but just found out it's by the makers of "lost", and now I dont want to invest any time in it as it descends to an inevitably shit conclusion.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Lost was probably the first show I was super invested in for like 3 or 4 seasons. Ended up not finishing it with little regret.

From is a horror/thriller, no?

melbourne_wanderer@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

It touches on horror for a few eps, but is more kinda suspense? I think, based on the other comment, I'm gonna give it a pass. It had promise, but it feels like it's going nowhere/into way more episodes or seasons than it should.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

I've watched both seasons of From and I kind of understand where you're coming from. It's been 2 seasons of not any real answers, just more questions.

Edit: the 1st season I found genuinely intriguing, the 2nd season I watched more in the hopes of getting some answers or closure.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 3y

Time for bed I think. Hopefully bot #001 can manage the night shift, it has been a big day. I think the day naming problem we had might be sorted (the bot will be putting it in the body of the post until I'm sure it won't mess up the title again!). There was also an update released for the base code which has been included, and I tried to do something else which went horribly wrong. I had to do a full system restore and reinstall everything to fix it, so the poor bot was homeless for a while. Everything looks fine again now, but if things go wrong tonight it's probably not the cat's fault.

Banana bread is in the oven yay. Baby woke up an hour earlier than usual this morning so I’ve already had 2 coffees, done a load of laundry, read some of my new book, and of course the banana bread. Here I am up again, thinking.
Late night coffee, same old story.
Only two beers, but coffee I'm craving.
Fuck, I need to get my shit together,
I think I'm in for stormy weather,
Ugh, I have to get it all together.
I have to be an adult,
Sooner or later.
Preferrably sooner rather than later.
I mean, sure, I'm quite messed up,
Longterm therapy is on the cards.
Fighting myself
But I should be fighting for help.
But it isn't an excuse
To stagnate.
This is not my fate,
Just an actual phase.
An inbetween state,
While I mutate
It's not too late
For me to close that gate
Behind me.
I'm more than the sum of my past,
A human with some janky parts.
But it's all here, still chugging away,
Rusting but taking it day by day
Rusting away but it's okay.
I'm temporarily corporeal,
We're all here for just a little while.
So thank you all for reading my prose,
Be it funny, sad, a little bit morose.
You all are amazing, so human and cool!
Just keep being you.

Day 16 of my exercise program... and it's a rest day. I feel like doing some exercises though, so I did 5 minutes of the ultra back friendly stomach exercises in the video I saw yesterday. Oh man, they seem a bit lame but you can really feel them engage where it counts! It's a 10 day program in itself, so it looks like I've started a new thing! But it's hi ho hi ho for me now so I hope you all have a lovely day that you deserve!

DolphinLundgrin@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Care to share the back friendly exercise video?

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Sure! The exercises are at around 16:15 in this video if you want to skip to them, but I can recommend the whole video as it really helps understand how the muscles work and why doing some exercises, or doing them wrongly, is bad for you. I can't do the first one (basic planking) because my core isn't strong enough yet to do them without arching or sagging 😞 but I can highly recommend the others!

I don't know what the rules are on wearing non-office clothes at work (because my clothes are mostly if not 99.99% are graphic tees) so I need to buy more office-friendly clothes. And I need clothes that fit my aesthetic, which is just my aesthetic when I was 13 but I have money now!

StudChud@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Aw man, I feel you on that; most my clothes are graphic tees or rainbow stuff. I have like, two blouses and a pair of black pants for my 'office look' haha

I was a lil goth, but didnt have the aesthetic. Now I'm a grown, I'm a goth in my heart, but I'm too lazy for the makeup 😂 it is great to be able to look the way we wanted to look as kids, now that we can do what we want haha

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Yeah I have like 3 long sleeve shirts (now 4 including this black one) but short sleeves I think I have like two non-graphic tees, otherwise I have two button ups but they probably don't fit. One might but the other one is a Dangerfield shirt so their sizes aren't true to size.

Otherwise I have like 5 dresses I can easily just wear during summer until I get some new shirts.

I respect goths for the makeup they do. It's crazy! I was a emo/scene kid, still am tbh but now that I'm an adult and have income I can do things that little me wanted so bad (like my nose piercing. Though I hate to disappoint younger me, I won't be getting snake bite piercings. They're cool but not my style right now haha).

Ended up being perfect timing since I based it on the induction training I gave to a new employee 2 weeks ago who had revealed to me in their interview that they are completely illiterate.

The guy is amazing. Really mechanically gifted, super upbeat, really good memory. Everyone who meets him instantly likes him.

In his life he has been a manager from just how gifted he is mechanically and done well enough to buy his own home.

Cliched but I've definitely learnt a lot from this guy.

I've had my garmin watch for over a month now and I had to take it off because I developed welts on my wrist like I'd been attacked by a iced vovo. They weren't burns or itchy. It wasn't tight or anything. I don't wear it in the shower or get it wet. Very odd. So I've cleaned it and I've just put it back on. Maybe I should have cleaned it before I started wearing it the first time. Anyway time to watch and wait. (Puns intended)

Mittens_meow@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Same issues with bands. Also don’t wear my watch at night. Lets the skin breathe.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (2 replies)

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

00Steve@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (2 replies)

What band do you have on it? When i got my fitbit i had lots of similar issues from the band it came with. I bought myself a leather band to replace it with and its been fine since

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

If I use the silicone band that comes with the fitbit I get burns and everything. It isn't until I switch to... anything else, it's fine. Like I currently have a cotton? band, and it's fine. I also try to moisturise on my wrists so I don't get the weird burns.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Rubber/latex/synthetic thing. It was odd that it developed after a month and it appeared very quickly. If it happens again I will definitely change the band on it.

Edit: I've had a look and I guess it's silicone.

omoikiri@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Like everyone else has said, I had the same issue with my silicon Apple Watch band when I first got it. It gave my a sweat rash. Eventually my skin got used to it, but I have bought a bunch of other cloth and metal bands to switch out instead. I wear the silicon one when I’m exercising or I need something waterproof, but I mostly wear the others now. I’m not sure how customisable the Garmin is in terms of bands though. There are hundreds of thousands of cheapo bands for the Apple Watch though.

I’m currently wearing my scrunchie band which is great for when I want something more breathable. I usually wear these to bed as well.

::: spoiler spoiler :::

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Oooo. I really like that thanks. Yeah my garmin is compatible with anything 20 mm. So there's heaps to choose from.

mysticgreg@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (4 replies)

My Garmin Forerunner 245 did exactly the same thing to my wrist when I got it, ended up having to change the band.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (3 replies)

What did you change the band to?

mysticgreg@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (2 replies)

Was a few years ago now (I've since moved on to an Apple Watch with zero band issues), but it was quite literally just some cheapo off-brand thing from a market stall that said it was compatible. I think just the fact that it was more of a fabric band than a silicone-style one was what made the difference.

Sorry that wasn't very helpful :(

But just know that it's definitely a thing with Garmin bands, you're not going crazy.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Thanks for that. I do know it's a garmin thing. It's just odd because I have had a fit bit in the past with no problems. My watch doesn't love me like I love it :(

mysticgreg@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

My old Fitbit had a silicone band, and I've got a silicone band on my Apple Watch, and no issues with either of those. I wonder what it is about the Garmin ones?

Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Mine was quite snug for awhile (Apple) and I would get them due to that.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Time to stop being lazy and buy a cover, I just hate the way they look but if I actually end up smashing this thing I'll be gutted.

Nath@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

I spent the extra dosh to get a sapphire screen on my (Garmin) watch. I've had it for 4.5 years, it's been through the wars. The metal around the body has scratches, the paint has come off is a few places. The watch face itself though is perfect - as pristine as the day I bought it. It cost $150 more than the gorilla glass watch, but the investment has totally been worth it, given the rugged life it leads.

Oh. I just looked up the Apple store. The Ultra (Apple's sapphire watch) is $600 more expensive. Yeah - get a cover. :)

I used to work at a small local video hire place. Was always so awkward serving someone who would bring 5 or 6 R rated tapes up for hire. Especially when there was two of us serving at the desk next to each other - looks were exchanged.

5 or 6, damn! Must have had the week planned out.

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

it was always 5 or 6 or there abouts. no one ever borrowed just one.

Bought my cat biscuits meant for sensitive stomachs and skin, the same brand as he has had before and within 10 minutes he vomited them up. I think he ate too fast but the irony is not lost on me.

It's like that children's book Walter the Farting Dog, where the low-fart dog biscuits just made him fart more.

My my 4yo's favourite book at the moment.

Should look into getting that for my nephew when his birthday rolls around in a few months (not blood related, but there's no name for "my best friend who feels more like a brother to me than best friend's kid" that isn't short and sweet).

MisssDarylC@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Hahaha sounds like a great book and it really is exactly like that.

Got through first night of training. Pretty happy to have made a start. A lot of stuff I already knew and the rest of it feels like marketing. But hey good to have made a start on a formal qualification I guess. Even if it is foundational. Not sure I’m up for the full administrator cause with a baby in the house.

Hey good on you for doing what you are doing with a tiny in residence; lovely though it is having kids, it isn't easy doing career progression stuff. Cheers to you 👍

Would or should my landlord cough up for a service for my split system AC? Anyone asked for it before?

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

My mum's a property manager and she said this "Renter responsibility is to keep the unit and filters clean, maintenance is on the owner".

batarians@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I would assume that if the AC came with the property when you rented it, then it would be the landlord's responsibility to cover maintenance costs. We clean ours semi-regularly (unit, filters etc.) since it's our only source of heating and cooling, but haven't had it serviced yet. There's something on this website that kind of? says the same thing but it's not super clear.

Pilk@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

It did come with the place. I am sure it is overdue for a service, it has been a bit smelly on the heating cycle since I moved in line 18 months ago. Bit concerned about mould and bacteria so will seriously consider asking for a service.

What's a decent price for a banh mi, in your opinion?

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

If it's over $10 you're in the wrong place imo

jezbeenz@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Paid $8 today which I feel is reasonable in today's financial climate

Goddess_Amaterasu@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

$9.50 actually I haven’t been to one in awhile so unsure if the price for the place I usually go to. Remember hearing from someone that the price has gone up, and don’t remember how much

Any tips for camping in winter? Thinking I might take a one night-er somewhere close by, but last time I went to la trobe river in October I nearly froze to death.

WeatherproofMonkey@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

A 4 season tent, insulated sleeping mat with extra foam mat underneath, a winter temp rated down sleeping bag, extra warm liner (some could add a few extra degrees), Merino base layer to sleep in, or/ and a down jacket to sleep in if feeling extra cold and a beanie. And plenty of food before bed!

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

My "proper" tent is a 6p, and it'll be a solo trip. So I'll probably have to make do with the hiking tent. But yes, my 5c sleeping back might need an upgrade.

melbourne_wanderer@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y (1 reply)

thermals, a good puffy jacket, woollen socks (no unnatural fibres/blends), a beanie, and lots of firewood. A decent sleeping bag is a must, and a proper sleeping mat (not a lilo or anything similar - those things offer no protection at all).

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

I've got a cheapie kmart sleeping mat, I might need to consider upgrading. Thermals are a good idea.
