Sometimes, in a split second I get this kind of sadness when I see something.

I saw a guy with his son and he was showing him how to fill the car with petrol.

Nothing special. Unless you've never really had a father. Then you think about all the other stuff you had to learn by yourself; like shaving, driving, finding your first job and hundreds of other small things you don't normally think about.

I suppose there's pride in having navigated from age 14 till 41 by yourself. But it's a poor 2nd place prize.

Sorry for the downer.

I think you deserve all the hugs in the world for having to feel that way ๐Ÿซ‚ That's heartbreaking. I know you can't do anything about how it all is and you're unbelievably bright and level-headed and observant for all you've been through, but I hope so much you do find your own family when you become independent and get some of those happy family vibes in your real life. The physical feeling of belonging and security is absolutely unmatched. May you get to experience that for real with good people who will be there for you :D

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (1 reply)

so many super hugs

I get that feeling from "normalcy" too, then I see the dysfunctional fam and have to tone down my normal.

I'm the same with any family related media. It just hurts. I know about that euphoric state you're talking about. For me, they happen when I succeed at something I've been working hard at. I feel really good for a while, then the thoughts of "wish I had a family (that's average) to celebrate with".

All my victories are silent.

I lie to people when ask me about my family. I made up a story about how they are all overseas. Stops the weird vibe that happens when you tell the truth.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I felt this with some of the dads at my old workplace. Hearing them having to leave on time to go watch a game or going to a 9 day fortnight so they could spend more time with their kids. I kinda teared up for a bit thinking about how my dad never bothered. If he picked me up he was often late and I once spent 90 minutes waiting on the kerb (in the day before mobiles). The only time he ever came for an accomplishment of mine - the highest one I ever had - he made it all about himself and was a total embarrassment.

It must hit a lot harder as a man. Hugs

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

I'm sorry you went through that. I really am.

I saw a lot of that when I worked in manual labour. These guys were rough around the edges but they genuinely cared about their families and would do anything to make sure they were safe, happy and secure.

The way they talked about their kids, you could tell deep down they loved them. Even if they had this tough guy exterior.

Sometimes I tear up when I see families in public having fun and just being happy together. Lucky I always wear sunnies outside.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

so many many hugs. Yes, your achievements are yours.

I'm a little older than you and am still finding out all the things I should know but don't, things that an interested parent would have taught.

But I did get taught a whole load of shitty baggage.

Thank you โค๏ธ

Yeah that last part I know all too well. I'm so fucking grateful that I'm nothing like my father. I learned early that he was bad. But it took a hell of a lot of work and effort to correct the bullshit he instilled in me.

Is it possible to get a stick on Ring camera? I seem to remember a rental friendly option but then again I think you have to pay a subscription

Edit: You can also maybe use an old phone as a security camera but you'd have to hide it and it's not protected from weather. Game cameras don't let you see out there live which is what you want

Is it Hot Take Thursday? I think it is. Anyway my hot take is: Milo is not that great. It's ok on ice cream or the occasional hot drink but it's pretty bland.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (1 reply)

That everyone as well as kids <5 need ankle bracelets that deliver an electric current when they're not walking on the left of footpaths.

Nothing crazy.. maybe 220,000 volts or so.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

I think if you have a toddler, you and the kid should be implanted with a magnet and it automatically activates in carparks.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (6 replies)

Most children under 5 should be leashed

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Mine were, lol.. both were pretty keen on doing a runner as soon as they were released from the confines of a stroller/car/parent, and I had foot issues after the 2nd pregnancy (plantar fasciitis for example) so i didn't fancy my chances of hobbling after them. My chase-hobbling looked like a John Cleese silly walk on speed so the cuddly toy baby leash backpack was employed. When my mum passed away and I was clearing out the cupboards I found a 70s baby leash with parental wrist strap.. looks like the apple didn't run far from the tree ๐Ÿ˜†

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

My kid was too. Not because she was a runner but because little kids arms get tired from having their arm raised so if she did let go I still had control over her movements.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Excuse my brain: John Cleese & Bill Nighy silly walk stalking toddlers to an Attenborough overdub

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

heh..

Actually saw that recently at the shops and wasn't quite sure how to feel about it.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

I understand that it's now OK to do this - apparently having the kid on a leash/harness means they "can explore their world with both hands" rather than going through life with one hand raised up above their head in their mother's grasp. Apparently the leash/harness is good for brain development and posture. I'm from the first generation where such harnesses were not OK (the Dr Spock baby in person), and I sorta kinda get where they're coming from. Also a less stressed mum.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (4 replies)

I'm dusty and frazzled from my unexpectedly hyper extended trip thanks to trespassers on the track and my overall confusion around inspecting a car and trying to decide what can slide and what's risky. I get different answers from different people about how important documented logbook servicing is.

Folks with a working class background tell me it's not everything if it clears a pre purchase inspection and drives ok, and won't impact resale value that much, plenty of people just get their mates to do the servicing and it's turned out fine. Everyone else is like no way... rather even take a similar car with some aesthetic panel damage if it's got a solid logbook.

Nath@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Log books, particularly logs where the owner paid for the service tell you that regular maintenance mattered to the owner. It's an indicator that the car has been cared for and looked after.

But they aren't everything. And their lack doesn't say that the owner didn't look after the car.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

That's the thing with the second point, it's hard to decide whether it was just the owner being negligent or just looked after it in other ways.

However, adding onto the fact that it was an ex-auction car before this person bought it... and then left the country and has got her mum to handle selling it... is really adding up to some ???

I am not taking this footy tipping thing very seriously - I had 2 minutes to spare when I remembered I hadn't done it yet. Luckily, you can just tip tonight's game, save it and then do the others after that one is locked in.

This is a much easier round to call than last week. There were a few I wasn't sure what to choose last week. This week, not so much.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Hey I have a silly question...

I have a Mac given to me by family when my old laptop had an issue, but I'm finding it really awkward and/or not compatible with many things I do. I have an old Windows desktop that I've pulled out that still runs. However it's Windows 7 which is now out of support. I'm not paying a large fee to buy Windows 10. And it's too old to be compatible with the free Windows 11 upgrade.

I do have a Windows 10 rescue disc but it's specific to a different laptop so wouldn't have the right drivers.

I'd go Linux but it also doesn't do some stuff I want.

I did manage to find a loophole and get a downloadable Windows 10 iso by accessing the downloads page with the Mac, which showed me a "Windows 10 multi-edition iso". It's too large to fit as a bootable on the format offered by the stick drive and too large to fit as a bootable on a non-double sided DVD, but I could mount the iso directly from the partition.

However. Is this iso legit to use? It's from Microsoft so it wouldn't be cracked, but idk if there could be some tech issues cropping up or I could get stung for not being licensed to use it or some shit.

Linux is your best bet, win10 is on the way out as well. Win 7 does still work as long as you're not a dumbfuck with it, but up to you.

Wrt things you don't want, what's missing? Mint is the easiest transition from a windows environment and will put less bloat on your system

Basically I want to be able to have a wide pick of games and apparently Linux can be difficult for that and a fair few don't run on Mac or Linux. I know there's stuff like Wine or emulators but I don't really have the spoons to keep running into roadblocks and stuff. It can be a learning curve and I just don't really have the brain cells to spare right now

Edit: I also find it easier to sign documents digitally with the mouse and email the signed copy back. This was something I did easily on Windows but the tools for that on Mac are really really not suiting me.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Wine really has come a long long way (and steam has a native linux client if that's your jam) . you really just set up once and go.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Lately I has teh dumb ;-;

I could look into it at some point when I'm less scattered and see if it's something I could potentially get going.

It's so bad. And you're seen as smart so there's not always a lot of understanding for it or grace given

There may be free online aps that you can access through your Mac browser, eg with a google account you can use google word processor or spreadsheet. If you have a specific task maybe some more knowledge people here can help on how to do it without windows?

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

I'm super wary of free online apps but thanks for the suggestion

It might! I do know the period to get Windows 10 for free is over and I'm not being allowed to upgrade to Windows 10 or get the iso on the Windows machine, but I may still have the key for the Windows 7 to use their suggestions. I am a bit concerned about Microsoft getting litigious about it though. As Adobe is considering people using old versions of Photoshop as not having permission.

Yes the internet is becoming a capitalist hellscape

T156@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

You might be able to. Microsoft kept the Windows 10 upgrade page for a good long while, so it might still be possible.

As Adobe is considering people using old versions of Photoshop as not having permission.

Realistically, as a non-solicitator, I can't see them winning that argument. People paid for that version of Photoshop, and are using it. They're not using it to sneak into some special upgrade programme.

It would be like Sony showing up to your house to confiscate all your CDs, because its old enough they decided that you no longer have permission to own the thing.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Crunchyroll removed digital content that people paid for after absorbing Funimation, and I think some streaming companies pulled movies/music that people had bought. And Adobe also didnโ€™t pay Pantone some fees the company wanted so if people using Photoshop didnโ€™t pay up the Pantone colours in their finished art turned black. (Stuart Semple released a plugin called Freetone to fix it.)

So I donโ€™t know :(

If I had more organisation/energy/braincells I would just go Linux as recommended and have open source versions of everything
