I was shocked when I realized people pronounced it fs-tab lmao

Linguist@lemmy.world · 76 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Mentally I say Fs-tab because its filesystem table but if I ever say it out loud its f-stab

some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org · 22 pts · 2y

Madness.

JetpackJackson@feddit.de · 8 pts · 2y

Now that's insanity

Empricorn@feddit.nl · 3 pts · 2y

I'm calling the authorities. All of them.

BlackPenguins@lemmy.world · 35 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Oh shit. Does that stand for file system?

Revan343@lemmy.ca · 39 pts · 2y (1 reply)

File system table

Empricorn@feddit.nl · 5 pts · 2y

*File System Table-stab

clif@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 2y

I've never heard fs-tab in my life. Always f-stab. Hmmm...

Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de · 24 pts · 2y (1 reply)

TIL for me

JetpackJackson@feddit.de · 4 pts · 2y

Congrats for being one of today's lucky 10000! Sauce

bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de · 8 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Was the other way around for me. F-stab just makes no sense.

JetpackJackson@feddit.de · 12 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Idk its just how my brain decided to "chop up" the word if that makes sense

tourist@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2y (1 reply)

stab up the word

JetpackJackson@feddit.de · 3 pts · 2y

Sure we can put that way lol

Empricorn@feddit.nl · 3 pts · 2y

But it sure is memorable!

mikyopii@programming.dev · 104 pts · 2y (2 replies)

g-unzip?

gun-zip

I used this command way before I used gzip so I didn't put it together.

clif@lemmy.world · 47 pts · 2y

gun-zip just rolls off the tongue better. Two syllables instead of three? Yes, please.

Blaster_M@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 2y

Gun Zip - you literally shoot the gz file and it explodes like a piƱata of files all over the dir you gun zipped it in.

Artyom@lemm.ee · 82 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Ah yes, the file stabber, not to be confused with a file system tabulation, which it definitely is not.

sundray@lemmus.org · 54 pts · 2y

1984@lemmy.today · 23 pts · 2y

File stabber is a good name. :)

rem26_art@fedia.io · 65 pts · 2y (1 reply)

... it never occurred to me that it could be fs tab

gofsckyourself@lemmy.world · 55 pts · 2y

Go fsck yourself

ramius345@sh.itjust.works · 40 pts · 2y

Know what it means. Still call it f stab.

Lobreeze@lemmy.world · 33 pts · 2y (2 replies)

F-stab easier to say and more fun to say

I'll die on this hill

snugglebutt@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 10 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I'll defend this hill with you

milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee · 7 pts · 2y

By stabbing

MehBlah@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 2y

It is what its always been. F stab

ichbinjasokreativ@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 2y (12 replies)

Mental outlaw said that and it just stayed in my head ever since. Just like /etc is 'etsy'.

SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org · 20 pts · 2y (5 replies)

Or SQL is Squeal

UndulyUnruly@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Sacrilege!

BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 2y

No squeal

OrgunDonor@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2y

SQL has always been Skull in my head. I think it is because I hated it when in college and associated it with dying inside.

schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 2y
justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 2y

Not sequel?

rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2y

Though I know it means "et cetera" when reading my brain has always "heard" that word - whether in the context of the word "etc." or the computing /etc - as pronounced "ettick." As in, "you need to edit your ettick f-stab file."

NaibofTabr@infosec.pub · 4 pts · 2y (4 replies)

How else would you say /etc ?

bitwaba@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2y (2 replies)

E-T-C

Blaster_M@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y

Echo Tango Charlie

NaibofTabr@infosec.pub · 2 pts · 2y

TacoNot@mander.xyz · 5 pts · 2y

et cetera

SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org · 24 pts · 2y

It took me a lot longer than I'd like to admit to realize that it was FS Tab.

southsamurai@sh.itjust.works · 24 pts · 2y

Shit, just say f-stab and enjoy someone "correcting" you, only to smile and continue to say it that way.

KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 18 pts · 2y (2 replies)

f stab is real shit bro

fs tab is for losers.

real men say et-see, not etcetera.

Matombo@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

i say ee-tee-see

KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 2y

et-see is the objectively correct version, ee-tee-see is the marginally more correct, but less funny version of it. And etcetera is just illegal, you should be jailed if you ever say that.

dodos@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 2y

TIL, I had no clue why we call this arbitrary important file a file stab, but fs tab makes sense now. F stab is more fun to say though (but has probably confused more than just me)

palordrolap@kbin.social · 12 pts · 2y

I think I might be the third option: f'ss-tab.

Couldn't tell you where that's from. When I first ran Linux, the year didn't start with a 2.

recapitated@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 2y

This meme fscks

joes@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 2y

it's tune-2fs, right

funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 2y

and before that, get the drive name from the "black kid".

Matombo@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y

oh nice i'm not the only f-stabbing psycho

PINKeHamton@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Its FS Tab never knew

Matombo@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

now where is the f-sck (spoken f-sack) gang?

DickFiasco@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 2y

I always pronounce it "fezzik" like Andre the Giant's character from The Princess Bride.

Thcdenton@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y

Kuba@programming.dev · 1 pts · 2y

I say FS-stab
