I love this image, and this was one of my favorite numbers in science too. Sometimes I think it’s more difficult to imagine how insanely small the atomic scale is than how insanely large the cosmic scale is.
I googled "was Avogadro ugly" and found this picture posted on r/funny ten years ago. But also quite a few people seem to agree that he was indeed quite ugly.

Is that Avogadro's constant?
Bumblefumble@lemm.ee · 29 pts · 2y
Yes, it's the avocado man himself in the picture.

It's Avogadro's constant. The number of carbon atoms in 12 grams of carbon.

Wait. They redefined it in 2019 but I thought that "new" way was what I did in school 🤔

They changed the definition, the value is the same (within the error of the best available measurement of the time).

Isn't it the number of atoms of ANY element for it's element in number of grams?

Either people didn’t know how to draw back then, or Avogado was monstrously ugly…
VelvetStorm@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y
This style of drawing wasn't about making someone look pretty or ugly it was about making an accurate portrait, so he likely looked very similar.

He looks like a mole..

No? It's the number of particles per mol, a huge number.
