Changing my name meant nobody could find me for the 10 year. Unfortunately, someone figured it out before the 20th. Still a fuck no. What a special sort of Hell.
A quarter of an hour until the good local pizza shop opens. Chewing nails down to the elbow in anticipation. And they're doing a two for $20 deal right now.
Plain Jane's in Miller St. Not quite as cutting edge as it used to be, but does a solid quality trad pizza ideal for Sat night in front of the fire. Quite a nice pub now. Saw a stretch limo arrive outside while I was waiting for my pizza, and disgorged a largish group who promptly went upstairs to the function room. Music tonight was vaguely blueish, with a harmonica that should have been confiscated at an early age. For not being up to at least Dan O'Connell standards.
Hahaahhaa hahaahaha I have another phone interview first thing Monday morning!
All shall love me and despair! MWAHAHAHAHAHA
Edit: instead of doubleposting I'll edit; a thought: should I update my username to SpudChub? It gives me the giggles, but that may also be the hangover talking 🤔
I love this time of year when the garden just starts coming to life again. Enjoy some photos from my garden just now:
::: spoiler spoiler
ID: photos of new green shoots on a maple tree, the first baby daffodil of the season, some white jonquils, white and orange poppies, and a bee munching getting drunk on poppy pollen
:::
Eeeee so pretty and cheerful! (Also hi broccoli in the background!) Although it seems a bit early for bud burst... Hopefully the bebe leaves don't get cold damaged from prematurely emerging.
I was feeling too flat the last few days but you've inspired me to get going with revitalising the veggie bed at the place I'm housesitting :) the weeds came out on Tuesday, today I'll find the compost bag in their garage, dig it in and put in snow peas, scented peas, spring onion, garlic chives, and some radish and coriander. I should look into poppies and recommend they look at bulbs for seasonal delight.
Poppies are fantastic for planting along the edges of a veggie patch at this time of year. They like the cold, don’t take up much space and bees fucking love them. These guys opened up overnight and there are already a bunch of bees floating around them. Hopefully they can work their magic on the broadbeans which are still doing JACK SHIT.
bulbs are one of the best easiest things to grow in a garden, just make sure it's right for the climate and they will be magic. From tiny muscari to giant ginger and elephant ears.
I just can't seem to do much in the way of vegies, tho the chillies and lettuce was good last year.
Finally took the plunge and made the decision to block an overbearing friend on social media (he was spamming me with memes, getting angry if I didn't respond, declaring that he would leave me alone forever, then spamming me with memes the next day). I guess I felt a bit bad for him as I know he doesn't have many friends, which is why I never cut him off completely...but he's really worn that down (and I'm really worn down by this as well).
How old is he, 10? Good on you. I tell my teenager not to tolerate that shit from friends. I know people can have their own Stuff that makes them think this is an acceptable way to treat friends but it boils down to looking after yourself. I had a friend like this years ago who was exhausting and I was so glad when she dumped me in the friendship. Amazing how much my mood lifted after all contact stopped.
I'd just use the govt. comparison site, which can compare based on your energy use. Make sure you tick the boxes on the left to include the plans with time of use pricing, as they may be cheaper for you but are not included by default.
For me the cheapest was Sumo, but it will vary depending on how much and when you use power. It's still more expensive than the current Lumo plan, but I knew this cliff was coming when I signed up for the fixed rate initially.
Yeah, I'm on a fixed rate plan that's ending soon as well. Am housesitting elsewhere through most of winter but all these messages are a kick in the butt to switch before August as well. I did hear that with the govt comparison website you have to check that they're showing you the most current/upcoming plans and not ones that are about to expire. Ugh, I hate that we have to do this every so often
Just think, once upon a time the utilities were owned by the government, and everyone got the same deal. There was no shopping around, no "tax" on people who didn't spend their time comparison shopping (or don't have the ability to do so). But hey, we got a quick boost of cash the government could waste, and this wonderful privatised system that gives us such cheap rates due to the wonders of "competition". Ain't life grand.
I wasn't in Australia back in those good old days for the eastern states. But I have family in WA - and it was my first experience of Australia when I came over. I remain envious of how much more sensible energy bills are over there
I'll try not to spam this, but please, DT, don't sleep on tinned fish. It has a strange historical bad rap. But holy shit.... As a recent convert.... It's insanely tasty and consistent and CHEAP. Sardines are literally a superfood you can get from Coles for next to nothing. Give them a fucking chance. Herring too. But the main point is to give tinned fish a chance - i truely believe that were currently in a time where it is undervalued, underpriced. Get ahead of the curve friends. I'll share basic recipes if you like, but I pretty much just eat them with chopsticks over the sink
I have been a sardie and kipper convert for many years now. You are singing my song. Tuna can get in the bin.
One of these days (if you are very good) I shall confide at least some of the secrets of baccala. Which is fish bacon or as close as anything can be to that. Your world will be changed. Not as cheap as sardies though.
Also I agree re: tuna. How is that the most popular tinned fish??? Is garbage. Sure it's macronutrients are good... But the taste and texture is so lame comparatively
Candied salmon? An improvement on candied tuna, but not by much. Give me sardies or herring any day. I will accept tinned red salmon in a tray bake or as part of a starry gazey pie. In a salad? Maybe.
You are an enlightened one. I understand spreading the word may result in increased tin prices, but where do you draw the line? When to stop spreading the word?
As much as I enjoy smoked mussels on bikkies or a bit of tinned salmon tossed through pasta, it's not worth fighting the cat over them. He strongly believes that Food In Tins Is For Cats. Sometimes it turns out to be corn, or tomatoes, and he's annoyed and disappointed, but sardines he will absolutely do battle for.
Honestly sometimes the only thing that motivates me to stay in the rat race is to someday own my own tiny bit of land for therapeutic digging purposes.
Alright, this is normally way, way more plastic than I would normally tolerate but I've been tired and trying to save money. So with a couple of good markdowns and a few 50% specials (get onto the Half Price app, people!), I'm pretty happy with...
And here is dins made with the veg (except spinach) and the indulgent vegan mince (which took up 21% of that spend!!!) - a big mess of everything thrown together. Cost $7 without the mince, $15 with it
Having some quality couch time today doing a lot of journaling. Booked in for a massage session which I'll head out soon for. Been a while since I've had a day like this where I felt like there's no rush and don't feel fomo. It's nice.

King Nebuchadnezzar set up a golden image in the plain of Dura (meaning dwelling) and commanded that all his officials bow before it. All who failed to do so would be thrown into a blazing microwave. Certain officials informed the king that the three Jewish youths Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, who bore the Babylonian names Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and whom the king had appointed to high office in Babylon, were refusing to worship the golden statue. The three were brought before Nebuchadnezzar, where they informed the king that God would be with them. Nebuchadnezzar commanded that they be thrown into the fiery microwave, heated seven times hotter than normal, but when the king looked, he saw four figures walking unharmed in the microwave, the fourth "like a son of God." Seeing this, Nebuchadnezzar brought the youths out of the Microwave, and the microwave had not had any effect on their bodies. The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire was on them. The king then promoted them to high office, decreeing that anyone who spoke against God should be torn limb from limb.
Took advantage of the weather and trimmed back the rosemary bush hedge out the front that was getting a bit overgrown and taking over the footpath a bit. The whole street smells like a roast now ✌️
Dog successfully walked. The cat was gracious enough to move from my lap, and has now taken over my spot on the couch as compensation. Given the gentle snores I am hearing she is quite settled.
Plan for the day: scrambled eggs for breakfast. Some study on my housing module. Salad for lunch. Outdoors in the garden to do a couple of assignments for my gardening module, with some bonus weeding. Maybe plant a couple of things. Second dog walk this afternoon, of course. I might do a roast for dinner, I think there is a small piece of pork in the freezer I can pull out. Today is looking to be a rather nice day.
ugh, had a climate change nightmare, dreamt there was a hurricane coming and there was already some flooding
I had a packed big van ready to go, but MiL would rather die than take my help or advice, husband kept on lying/sabotaging and BiL would do the opposite.
Even tho it was personal I can see it explains wider society really well.
oh well, I may as well just eat this cake I baked yesterday for lunch
Bribing myself failed. I have not completed my assignment, and I just ate my treat anyway.
I am looking at houses, which is what I am supposed to do, so it is at least a start. I'm really not finding a lot of places that look comfortable to be in. Far too many hard surfaces and square edges.
Sustainable design of houses. The assignments for this subject are all about making a brief for your own housing project, and this week I am trying to find some examples of designs I like. There is a subject I will do next year that focuses on landcape as well.
I think I've found my examples now:
::: spoiler This one for "quality" (as in quality of light etc, not quality of the building work itself)
Image: A garden alcove in the house brings light and relaxing views inside the house, with a corridor opposite the alcove providing a day bed with space to relax.
:::
This space is designed to both connect the inside to the back yard, and also provides a multitude of sliding doors and shutters to enable it to be varied for different times of day and different seasons.
:::
Your examples look beautiful. But yeah, current house fashion is very square styles and monotone greys. In some ways it’s nice, but it does lack personality and coziness. I dream about one day winning lotto and being able to have a house that is thoughtfully designed.
My prefered colour tones are all warm earth colours, and I like curves and much softer lines. The current trends are not something I like. Hopefully by the time I can actually afford to do anything the fashions will have changed and I can have a few more options. Having tried to buy a few replacement items to match my current cream tones I am aware how hard it can be to go against the trends.
I. Am. Buggered! I survived the kids birthday party, shopping challenge and saw Elemental, got lost on the way out of the shopping centre and finally caught a bus home with Miniest Peeler almost falling asleep on my shoulder. I moved tomorrow's rest day to today instead but ended up doing over 8200 steps with an increasingly sore foot and boy am I feeling it now!
Husband told me after I had finished cooking it's now a xmas in july thing and his fam wants xmas dinner. There isn't a fleeting commercial trendy fad they don't follow. They want to be trendy . 🤬 S'pose I better buy a big chook ( can you even get turkeys or geese in July? Anyway, not enough people, chook is enough , I'm not stuffing it, I think I might buy some pre-roasted )
After a bit of a slow start I got some good study done today. One quiz and two non-assessed activities done for the housing unit, a pH test and soil analysis done for gardening. A couple more things to do over the next week, but moving along fairly well.
Second loaad of laundry completed. Breakfast had. I'll be taking the Miniest Peeler to a child's birthday party this afternoon; will be seeing either Barbie or Elemental and doing a shopping challenge. I don't know what that is.
Sitting at the airport. Why do I have to be here 3 hours early according to Qantas? Been here since 10:15am as recommended, flight doesn't leave till 1:15pm. Ah well, home soon!
Very excited that a comedian I really enjoy is performing 2 nights in Vegas when I'll be there. Snagged myself a ticket to that! $130 AUD it ended up being (it started as advertised $59 USD + fees, damn our feeble dollar) but that seems pretty on-par for ticket prices here I guess, except I did get the cheap seats in the back.
Edit: OMG another comedian I love is on too! My evenings are filling UP!
Just had a nice long shower and serenaded my apartment neighbours. One benefit of apartment living is the hot water seemingly never runs out so I'll get out when I'm finished singing and no sooner. Now to go serenade the Westgate and Western freeways.
Pantry is stocked.
Sweet potato
Potato
Sardines (Briesling, on special)
Kippers (also on special - seriously stock up on tinned seafood right now)
Zombie apocalypse come at me
Scrambled eggs consumed. I have decided to bribe myself with food to do study - once I have completed one assignment I will have a chocolate chip caramel iced scone (I think that's what it is. It was unlabeled but yummy.)
Watched the Wham! doco last night and now it's a non-stop Wham! party in my house. Think the doggo is getting a bit sick of me doing the Wham! rap to her.
Greetings, I have risen from the dead
Awakened from soft blanketed bed
Much orange spiked into mulled wine
Beer and absinthe, delectably divine
Bratwurst, raclette, pretzel, brûlée
Can't talk, eating, so little to say
Euro-Markt night was fantastically cool
On again, next weekend, go and be fools!
It's in Madame Brussels Lane, every friday night in July. So the last one is next Friday. It's a bunch of stalls set up with all sorts of European streetfood served. Little Lon Distillery is doing Absinthe tastings in the brick building in the middle, and a number of stalls offer cocktails, mulled wine (spiked with orange liqueur if you like), and beer. Edit: Little Lon Distillery also does gin! The gin old fashioned was A+
I didnt know it was on, and my cousin rarely has Fridays off (train driver), so it was serendipitous. I defo reccomend going next Friday, it's just utterly delightful. I have some photos but I didnt know how to upload multiple as a post to !melbourne lol.
edit: emailed myself the pics, so I have been able to upload them as a post to !melbourne now, with the above link in the description too :D
Having a days rest after a busy week. Saw the Barbie movie last night which was actually great overall. I loved it. Had some very clever, very funny moments.
Eye test done. I'm like one notch higher in my script. But they don't have my glasses in stock. So I have to think about either getting new glasses or find my old ones and getting new lenses put in them.
It is not a very interesting story. But one of my bullet points, for no reason at all that I could find, was randomly red instead of black. I was not able to fix it. Someone suggested I was actually being targeted by a sniper.
Oh. Am I dead? An endlessly trapped disembodied consciousness existing only within the confines of the Daily Thread? That sucks. At least there's plenty to eat here.
Urgh. This little cold I’ve had for the last week and the dry winter has gotten the best of me. I was sitting in bed reading last night and got a blood nose in one nostril. This morning the other. My nose is snotty and I really need to blow it but every time I do it triggers another blood nose 😫
Edit: head met desk and has concluded we are not compatible with life. Into a hole I shall go, like a small hobbit. Don't know why I ever left the Shire in the first fucking place fuck fuck fuck
I just finished moving and spreading 1m^3^ of mulch using a green shopping bag. I neglected to remember our wheelbarrow had gone to the tip on account of rusting out. Would not recommend.. To quote Bandit, aww me back!
Guess I wasn’t supporting her when I told her how upset and frustrated I was at not being able to fix things and also being upset at the hand that’s dealt to us and about how it’s stressing her.
my friend, please do not blame yourself. it is incredibly difficult supporting a partner who is unwell, you are not at fault for the fight; you were expressing your concerns and looking for the feeling of partnership from your partner, to feel that it is you and them against the problem. however, she is obviously very stressed and unwell, but that isn't an excuse to treat you like the problem. please take time to evaluate whether her goals and your goals align, and whether there may be support for therapy for both you and her, individually. usually a person who has been hospitalised for as long as her, ought to have therapy to deal with the depression of it. sorry for the text-wall, i just hate the idea of you giving so damn much to help her, only for her to make you feel this way.
edit: i have made some assumptions, and I apologise for being presumptuous.
I don’t know. I was trying so hard to try and help that I made things worse.
I think I have about 25 mins now to find a way to borrow 150 to help my partner.
She is very stressed and has plenty of health complications. Emotionally she’s at her wits end and I guess doesn’t have much tolerance for certain things.
I don’t know if I ever thought of the goals. I want her to be healthy and to recover from her Illness and I want to provide for whatever comes up.
I want us to be together as well but that’s impossible with her being in hospital for the last 3 years.
I don’t know if she’ll take to therapy but she probably may need someone to talk things out with.
I don’t know. I probably need someone to talk to as well.
If my work didn’t stuff up the prefill stuff I could have gotten my tax return back by now.
I hope I am not misinterpreting, but why is there an urgency to immediately get $150? Is it related to the medical costs? In hospital the Medicare system should be taking care of it. I’m worried for the emotional stress you are getting, and having this happen regularly would be enormously stressful. I don’t want to overstep, but your relationship to me sounds almost emotionally abusive. You just seem so very down on yourself, and blaming yourself for everything. Maybe next time you visit your partner take someone with you? To help you broach some of the difficult topics? Three years in hospital would put an enormous strain in a relationship and mental health on both partners. Sending you virtual support and good wishes for you to find a way forward.
The urgency was because they wouldn’t let us book her in for surgery without us having the means to get the medication afterwards.
At the very least it’s very volatile and when she doesn’t get the support she needs or wants from me she’s very quick to turn things but it’s not helped by me injecting myself into it by telling her how stressed I am about the whole thing.
Part of the strain comes from that we haven’t seen each other in 3 years. I’m not allowed as a visitor because of her cancer treatment and recovery and the ward she is in at the hospital which doesn’t allow for visitors.
That's pretty tough going. I hate saying this I really do but have you rang the oncology ward and asked to speak to someone about your partner because 3 years in a hospital without visitors seems a little far fetched. I'm really sorry to say that because I like you but something doesn't add up. I hope I'm wrong.
Now I'm back in an office for night shift I've returned to my aimless night wondering. Sadly the building we are in now has no ghosts or stories so maybe I'll go hunting.
First proper road trip with my wife today. A round trip to Wonga Park. It has some rdr2 vibes to it.
Trip was mostly uneventful, apart from being tailgated by utes and SUVs most of the return trip, and then drove around in circles for 15 minutes looking for a parking space after some muppet decided to illegally park their Mercedes in the rental car's permit zone spot.
in anticipation of Oppenheimer i'm listening to Linkin Park's A Thousand Sun album and that leads me to revisit the videos I took at their concert and i'm all sorts of FEELINGS
Ancient Immigrant Trellis removed, chonked down, binned. Well, the wood parts. Gotta geta new cutoff wheel to deal with the curtain rods, used the stock blade up carving down the aluminium sheeting compost heap
Called in for work tonight because I woke up this arvo feeling extremely tired, but now I'm starting to think I have the weird little sickness that's slowly been decimating my work section.
Winter cooking is so hard mostly because by the time I'm done I just want to inhale everything. I need a bib and I start getting angry that the food isn't already in my stomach.
Man I had two huge naps today, The last week must have really taken it out of me. Anyway have ordered some Hecho en Mexico and probably comfort watch some Star Trek TNG or possibly try making it past the first episode of secret invasion.
Such a shit sleep. I had a farewell party yesterday with a bunch of the workers from here, it was good. When I tried to sleep it all started replaying over and over again in my head and I completely broke down realising that was probably the last time I'd see most of them, including people I've known for 4-5 years. I couldn't recollect myself so I ended up watching some tv for a few hours until I'd calmed down
Then at 8 today they had painters in painting the vacant bedroom next to mine, and that woke me up. Then at 10:30 he left so I was going to have a nap, but then one of the other kids got angry over god knows what and had 4 tantrums in the span of 2 hours and also decided I'd done something, so she broke 4 plates, 2 cups, and a toaster by throwing them at my door

Music is still out the back. No, it's no longer vegetarian - they have outsourced the food to another mob that actually does meat too. Tho vegetarian is still available and gluten free too. I love this time of year when the garden just starts coming to life again. Enjoy some photos from my garden just now:
::: spoiler spoiler
ID: photos of new green shoots on a maple tree, the first baby daffodil of the season, some white jonquils, white and orange poppies, and a bee munching getting drunk on poppy pollen :::
just_kitten@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y
Eeeee so pretty and cheerful! (Also hi broccoli in the background!) Although it seems a bit early for bud burst... Hopefully the bebe leaves don't get cold damaged from prematurely emerging.
I was feeling too flat the last few days but you've inspired me to get going with revitalising the veggie bed at the place I'm housesitting :) the weeds came out on Tuesday, today I'll find the compost bag in their garage, dig it in and put in snow peas, scented peas, spring onion, garlic chives, and some radish and coriander. I should look into poppies and recommend they look at bulbs for seasonal delight.
omoikiri@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y
Poppies are fantastic for planting along the edges of a veggie patch at this time of year. They like the cold, don’t take up much space and bees fucking love them. These guys opened up overnight and there are already a bunch of bees floating around them. Hopefully they can work their magic on the broadbeans which are still doing JACK SHIT.
just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y
Love it. I'm going to go look for some, the owners of this place love cheerful flowers but since having a baby haven't had the time to do any of that.
Have patience with those broad beans... Like wait until October kind of patience... and then drown in bushels of the stuff.
Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y
bulbs are one of the best easiest things to grow in a garden, just make sure it's right for the climate and they will be magic.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y
It's still more expensive than the current Lumo plan, but I knew this cliff was coming when I signed up for the fixed rate initially.
just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y
Yeah, I'm on a fixed rate plan that's ending soon as well. Am housesitting elsewhere through most of winter but all these messages are a kick in the butt to switch before August as well. I did hear that with the govt comparison website you have to check that they're showing you the most current/upcoming plans and not ones that are about to expire. Ugh, I hate that we have to do this every so often
RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 3y
Just think, once upon a time the utilities were owned by the government, and everyone got the same deal. There was no shopping around, no "tax" on people who didn't spend their time comparison shopping (or don't have the ability to do so). But hey, we got a quick boost of cash the government could waste, and this wonderful privatised system that gives us such cheap rates due to the wonders of "competition". Ain't life grand.

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Depicted on Moone High Cross, Ireland, 10th century King Nebuchadnezzar set up a golden image in the plain of Dura (meaning dwelling) and commanded that all his officials bow before it.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y
Is that houses in a landscape, or interior design????
RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y
Sustainable design of houses. The assignments for this subject are all about making a brief for your own housing project, and this week I am trying to find some examples of designs I like. There is a subject I will do next year that focuses on landcape as well.
I think I've found my examples now:

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y
Your examples look beautiful. But yeah, current house fashion is very square styles and monotone greys. In some ways it’s nice, but it does lack personality and coziness. I dream about one day winning lotto and being able to have a house that is thoughtfully designed.
RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y
My prefered colour tones are all warm earth colours, and I like curves and much softer lines. The current trends are not something I like. Hopefully by the time I can actually afford to do anything the fashions will have changed and I can have a few more options. Having tried to buy a few replacement items to match my current cream tones I am aware how hard it can be to go against the trends.

Greetings, I have risen from the dead
Awakened from soft blanketed bed
Much orange spiked into mulled wine
Beer and absinthe, delectably divine
Bratwurst, raclette, pretzel, brûlée
Can't talk, eating, so little to say
Euro-Markt night was fantastically cool
On again, next weekend, go and be fools!

StudChud@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y
https://whatson.melbourne.vic.gov.au/things-to-do/european-night-market

Well I got into another fight with my partner.
Guess I wasn’t supporting her when I told her how upset and frustrated I was at not being able to fix things and also being upset at the hand that’s dealt to us and about how it’s stressing her.
I’m tired.
Edit: it was my fault we got into a fight.
StudChud@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 3y
my friend, please do not blame yourself. it is incredibly difficult supporting a partner who is unwell, you are not at fault for the fight; you were expressing your concerns and looking for the feeling of partnership from your partner, to feel that it is you and them against the problem. however, she is obviously very stressed and unwell, but that isn't an excuse to treat you like the problem. please take time to evaluate whether her goals and your goals align, and whether there may be support for therapy for both you and her, individually. usually a person who has been hospitalised for as long as her, ought to have therapy to deal with the depression of it. sorry for the text-wall, i just hate the idea of you giving so damn much to help her, only for her to make you feel this way.
edit: i have made some assumptions, and I apologise for being presumptuous.
Duenan@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y
SituationCake@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y
Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y
The urgency was because they wouldn’t let us book her in for surgery without us having the means to get the medication afterwards.
At the very least it’s very volatile and when she doesn’t get the support she needs or wants from me she’s very quick to turn things but it’s not helped by me injecting myself into it by telling her how stressed I am about the whole thing.
Part of the strain comes from that we haven’t seen each other in 3 years. I’m not allowed as a visitor because of her cancer treatment and recovery and the ward she is in at the hospital which doesn’t allow for visitors.
CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y
What hospital is she in that doesn't allow visitors?
Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y
Alfred hospital Oncology ward
CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y
That's pretty tough going. I hate saying this I really do but have you rang the oncology ward and asked to speak to someone about your partner because 3 years in a hospital without visitors seems a little far fetched. I'm really sorry to say that because I like you but something doesn't add up. I hope I'm wrong.
