I've finally started at the new job. Let me know if you're having trouble with your employer, I can send them an email that should scare them into shape.

I'm working for the sort of government department departments wouldn't want to hear from, as long as they don't dig too deep and look at my job title

Real talk, they didn't vote for Trump because Harris is a POC woman, the reasoning seems to be much simpler, and dumber

  1. The economy isn't great
  2. It was better under Trump (any thoughts revolving around why it was better cough covid price gouging and shit trump repealed don't exist)
  3. Vote trump

Oh joy. Impending major restructuring at my workplace. No redundancies, more like the drive-the-people-remaining-to-breaking-point strategy.

My 11th year may end up being my last, time to dust off the resume and get the hell out of here :| At least I hit my LSL eligibility beforehand... :\

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

have you taken LSL yet? I'd take it, disappear for a few months then take the redundancy they offer when you get back.

mysticgreg@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The LSL is banked with the intention of just taking the cash when I leave, on top of the 7 weeks annual leave I've also got sitting there.

They're adamant there will be no redundancies, without coming out and saying it they're definitely trying for reduction through attrition.

See what happens I guess.

Salvo@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

As @tinybreak infers, they may be trying to get people to leave so that they donโ€™t have to payout redundancies.

If you take your LSL and AL, you can bypass all the issues. When you come back you will either be invaluable to them and be able to get a payrise, or they would have decided to issue redundancies after all and you can cash-in again. It is a gamble though.

Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Aww, that sucks, but hopefully another door openingโ€ฆ

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Oh noooo. Sorry to hear. Certainly brings up a lot of anxiety. What a shit way to restructure... I agree with taking your LSL as part of your plans. If they're going to be merciless, so can you

Iโ€™m now afraid for reproductive rights in Australia.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Nah. It'll be alright. We don't generally go backwards. We go at a snails pace forward unless it's a pay rise for pollies then it's all speed ahead.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 1y

We donโ€™t generally go backwards.

This is generally true. Except for the destruction of medicare, loss of local manufacturing industry, no taxation on our mineral resources, expensive and half useless universities and no consequences for government corruption

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Jesus Christ I HATE watching this US news, but I cant look away! Some folks are already calling it and I think I might throw up. Thats not a joke or an exaggeration.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y (8 replies)

The fact that it's this close speaks volumes of the US population.

Salvo@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It is also how biased the US electoral system is to maintain the Status Quo.

Every time the Republicans get in, the cripple democracy a little bit at a time. When the Democrats get in, they donโ€™t do anything to roll back the damage.

It has finally come to the Endgame for US Democracy.

All we can do is make sure that our elected officials are aware that it is not something that we want in Australia.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Have a friend who studied world history throughout uni. His statement about this is 'All empires must fall'. This is the fall.

USA has been going down the toilet for some time, and the turds getting bigger.

I'm gonna switch off the US crap and focus on our local (milder) shitshow.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (5 replies)

thinking on it I am not surprised

for 100 years the press and influencers have been making race an issue as a distraction to class , money and opportunity issues ( to stop the working class uniting , and yes, race is an issue )

the working class have genuine grievances and want a voice, sadly trump says he is their voice ( even tho that's a lie )

they don't want to hear more race issues

we need unity

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (4 replies)

I don't disagree, but the GOP and Trump have not been the voice of the working class. The fact that enough people have been convinced that they are, is just sad.

This election was also about women issues, and that fell on deaf ears.

The media has a lot of responsibility for this shit show.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (3 replies)

but fairness!! S/

the press are either cowards or love the money the drama of trump brings

in the meantime the independent voices in the media are getting shut down

just look at the drama of trying to bring this sub on lemmy under "control"

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Yeah the whole 'fairness' thing is a load of crap. With the election one side (generally the leftish leaning one) has to be perfect and spotless, meanwhile the other side might a slap on the wrist over something terrible.

One reason I love the ABC and SBS here. The only reason they appear to lean 'left' is because they report facts and don't favour either party, generally. It's just one side of politics tends to be shittier than the other.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

What do you mean about this sub and lemmy?

underwatermagpies@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'm very thankful for our electoral system.

Salvo@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

We just need to educate our electorate that we canโ€t โ€œThrow away your voteโ€ by preferencing a special-interest party above a Major partyโ€ฆ

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Like my gran used to say (she thought she was upper class).. "I deserve two votes" even though she never read any policy. I once flippantly said maybe charlie (her doggo pug) should get one too and she was thrilled at the idea.

So thereโ€™s now literal children buying anti-aging products like retinol and thereโ€™s a hair disclosing spray so women can completely defuzz their whole faces?

People are getting preventative Botox and giving themselves gastroparesis by using Ozempic and 20 year olds are either removing the fat from their cheeks or getting fillers? Celebrities with slightly crooked teeth are getting full veneers or caps?

Earlier periods of history got a bad reputation for their rigid beauty standards and rightfully so but I feel like itโ€™s all much more out of control now because internet. Modern beauty standards are insane.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 1y

World news aside, I've finished my first day at the new job. I think I need to get past induction and do some actual work, and start working from home, before I can decide if this was the right choice.

I think it will be. I need to remember how shit my old work was, even before things for really bad. Once I get started I won't wish I got things right in the old role, because even when things were working, they were just barely, and things were still shit

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 1y (23 replies)

Just as a little moment of grounding... What are we all having for dinner on this sombre evening? The real question about the US Election is do they get democracy sausages?

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'm not sure they'll even have democracy much longer, sausages are probably pushing it.

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

They haven't ever had it. Current system is more or less an oligarchy, it's just called democracy so as not to scare people.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (3 replies)

No. In fact, some states have passed laws prohibiting the distribution of refreshments to people waiting in line to vote

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That's wild

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

There is reason for it. Back in the days where travelling to a polling place was still a major event politicians used to ply people with food and alcohol to buy their votes. It often got quite out of control and was seen as a threat to democracy.

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

But was not mentally prepared for a such a large margin. So many Americans want this? I would like to think they didnโ€™t understand what they were really voting for. I have a sinking feeling thinking about what the next four years might have ahead both for Americans, and globally for places like Ukraine and the Middle East. :::

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Itโ€™s apparently going to weaken the Australian economy too? Which is fun.

I want to rage and call Americans stupid, and to be fair a lot of them did buy in to the hate and spin.

But I think there was also a lot of gerrymandering and ratfuckery at play. And apparently voting in America works differently to Australia. Canโ€™t imagine being a minority in America right now.

I really hope this doesnโ€™t hasten the Americanisation of Australia or import more crazy bullshit

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I don't think so. The working class here are more compliant and don't think in terms of rights like Americans do. Thus Australians have fewer resentments and less anger than Americans. They don't need to bring in full strength fascism here to crush the working class and labour movement.

It will be more like English class oppression.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Indeed, I've been refreshing the news pages pretty often, at the moment it might be because of the safe seats and counting that has happened through the midband of the US, as it hits the west coast Harris should get more votes to balance it out but it's not helping that Trump has won a few swing states already.

Salvo@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I really would have thought that a few of the safe seats would have flipped, considering how deranged he is and how many old-school Republicans have come out against him and endorsed Kamala.

It just goes to show that their Democracy has been so corrupted by decades of abuse that their elections no longer function.

I use a council gym and it's fab. Pretty cheap ($36/fortnight for the top membership which includes reformer pilates) and it's pretty social too. With really lovely staff and a mandate from council around social inclusion and engagement and stuff. They run events, there's a cafe, and it's just a really nice vibe.

It's not actually my closest council gym though, I travel (a whole ten minutes) to a neighbouring LGA for a shiny new facility.

Listings have been placed on Marketplace. Let the is this availables commence.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (8 replies)

I've received an absolute avalanche of requests today after listing stuff last night, god it's overwhelming! Do you give preference to the person who replies first or the person who can buy the most stuff off you...

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (5 replies)

I give preference to anyone who can give the soonest time to pickup, preferably telling me their preferred pickup timeframe in the initial message. I honestly don't care that much about the price, I just want stuff gone quickly with as little fuss as possible. So the more questions I have to ask/answer the less likely I am to sell.

Nath@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Reliability over everything for me. I'd rather know that the person is 100% going to come at [x] time and buy [thing]. It doesn't need to be today, I'll wait until the weekend even. So long as I know when they'll come and that they will for sure come at that time.

Having three people say they'll come and then don't turn up sucks. Do I hold out? Do I just go straight to the next person only to find out the first person turned up after all and now I'm shafting person #2? It's all exhausting.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

It's hard to tell reliability in advance though. I tend to prioritise anyone who appears to have basic communication skills, which tend to be lacking in most people. If they ask questions that are covered in the listing or can't manage to string together an actual offer to buy I tend not to bother with them.

Nath@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I don't do Facebook, so I don't know how the marketplace thing works. In Gumtree, you can see ratings of people. "Quick Responder", "Showed up on time" and "Polite" points account for a lot when I have a choice of buyers. If one buyer had a bunch of those and the other doesn't, I'll go with the one that does.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Maybe I should try Gumtree. Marketplace is mostly ferals with minimal communication skills and scammers.

Nath@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y

I mostly used eBay in Melbourne. I found it suited my needs. For whatever reason, it's just not popular in Perth. Even now when I use eBay (for stuff that can easily be posted), I find the sellers are in Melbourne about half the time.
