One of my clients got pissed off at the slow pace of their projects, and decided to bring in a 3rd party "project partner". Tomorrow I'm having a "conversation" with Senior Leadership Team. I have a real bad feeling I'm about to be scapegoated for the failures of the project team because the project team manager is besties with my manager. I hate this feeling so fucking much.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I know exactly how that feels. We're here for you if you need it

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I appreciate it man. Let's see how it plays out. It'd suck to be looking for a new job a few days before my birthday.

I'm OK money wise for a while, but I don't think I can do another 6 months without a job.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Let's hope things don't happen that fast. Even if they do, the job market is weirdly hot this time of year.

My boys' birthday is this Saturday as well so I get how you feel. I think you'll be able to ride it out until past Christmas

StudChud@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I'm stoned, a little faint after changing the bandage (just a non-stick one held one with normal bandaids lol) so lying on the couch. I'm such a pussy when it comes to my own body - I can watch and even help with wounds, but when it's my wound... Ugh!

Got a bag of twisties though! #winning

Duenan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Oh bummer. Hope youโ€™re not too out of sorts.

Are you busy at the moment?

StudChud@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'm alright :) just hate seeing my own blood haha

I'm not particularly busy:) why?

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Just going to send you a PM

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Got a reference request from a former colleague that I did not along with.

Our work relationship was cold, at best, so it's interesting that they would want to use me a reference.

I declined politely.

They were difficult to work with and created a large amount of unnecessary work for everyone.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (2 replies)

you were more polite than I woulda been.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (1 reply)

When I say polite it was basically

'Considering our respective roles during your time here, I am not in a position to provide you with a good reference. Good luck with the job hunt'

This person still knows people in our organisation, so I didn't think to completely destroy the bridge...just in case

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Great way to fob them off, you never know how people respond to more explicit rejection and it can fuck stuff up in other ways.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 1y

First class survived. Donโ€™t think I made a tit of myself. Making friends seems unlikely though.

Walk_blesseD@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 11 pts · 1y

Got off TAFE early today. Teacher had to pick up her kid from childcare cause they couldn't be arsed dealing with a three year old's tantrum. Some bullshit about the literal toddler posing a threat to other kids.

I was hoping to get more work done today. Guess I'm getting more units extended to next week.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 1y (4 replies)

2 more days and I'm on leave for 3. So much I need to get done before I go.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 1y (3 replies)

That's one thing I love about my job, there is no ongoing work to manage. The moment you leave your desk the work is someone else's problem and you can just leave and forget about it.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I wish I had that type of role. Because I have a portfolio of clients, they're my responsibility alone :(

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It definitely has its benefits. Although having projects you can see through to the end is also a satisfying thing which I don't get.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I promise you, for the types of projects I'm involved in, there's little satisfaction in seeing them to their end lol

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 1y

Left my hat and water bottle at the office before field work and have been mega cranky and annoyed today. Not how I wanted my day to go at all, I was looking forward to field work. And the moving place I inquired with seems to have a non-working number, I missed their callback but when I call their number it keeps cutting off. Grrrrrrrrrrr. I am PEEVED!

Need to have a good shower and some feel good show for tonight.

E: I will say, going out has given me a lot more pep and energy in other ways now that I've hydrated and cooled off. I miss field work!!!! I need to make this more regular

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Some people just suck all the air in meetings. Dude, shut the fuck up and let someone else talk!!!

Duenan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Do they also start with, โ€œin my experienceโ€?

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Oh my God we had someone like this at my old workplace and he was just insufferable. In the field, in meetings, just never knew when to stfu with his bad takes. Nobody liked him. Claimed he had ASD but after a certain point it's like no, you're a jerk with ASD. Definitely glad we don't have anyone like him where I work now

StudChud@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 1y (4 replies)

I guzzled the appropriate amount of water on Sunday and Monday, as my vein gushed a tad yesterday lol. First time 'round last year, the machine kept beeping because my pressure was low, because I didn't eat or drink enough.

This time, I filled that bag up quicksmart! Had a Nippy's Iced Coffee and some potato chips after. But yeah, now my elbow-pit is rather sore, I keep catastrophising and think it's still bleeding and I don't want to look, as it was when I changed the dressing yesterday (3 hours afterwards).

But! No complaints! Follow the directions and drink heaps of water!

Edit: actually, the only complaint is the bruise on my left middle finger from the haemoglobin test. I forget how much the tips of the fingers are used until one is sore ๐Ÿ˜…

Can do it more often, and they need people with big fat veins to handle the blood being back in when they seperate the plasma. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ I should rack up my donation numbers lol

I've started my shed cleanout. There is a lot of junk in there! And a lot of dirt โ˜น๏ธ If anyone is in the market for a slightly rusty hand saw let me know, I seem to have lots of them! I'm not even sure why I have some of this stuff, I'm pretty sure someone has been sneaking in and stashing stuff when I'm not looking. Couldn't possibly have been me!

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Morning. I had a very vivid dream in which

::: spoiler I was running late to work but had borrowed a car so was trying to do everything I needed a car for while I had it, so I'd gone to a library (that looked like a stereotypical posh US high school)... was cutting it fine and trying to fat-fingerly message my colleagues to please make me a coffee, but then just as I'm trying to drive off I find out the cat (I somehow own a skinny white one) has snuck into the car, and is now trying to escape... cue increasing panic as the wriggly thing keeps getting out (and some Indonesian kid passing by takes photos of it) and then runs all around the car once I've trapped it inside and I can't drive, and I see the "typing..." animation on the group chat and I realise it's time for everyone else to leave and I'm still not there... :::

... so I wake up groggily to check the time on the clock and FUCK it's 6:55am? I need to leave in ten!... only to grab my phone and see it's 6:05am... and here I am, adrenaline unnecessarily coursing through my system, resolutely staying in bed until i have to get up. ๐Ÿฅฑ ๐Ÿ˜ด

Really bad end to the day even if it only lasted for 10-15 mins.

Not looking forward to seeing how the rest of the time goes until I go on break.

Hopefully the steps put in place for the future will prevent future altercations from occurring.

Nothing like dealing with someone who thinks the way to solve problems is to enact revenge and thinking thatโ€™s the right way of doing things.

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

That's cos the game is not 'getting the work done', the game is 'being top dog'. I agree with melba that this goes nowhere good. Put on your own oxygen mask first. Good to know that steps are being taken.
EDIT: I'd put money on this person's work history being littered with similar situations.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

revenge? There are people like that in the business world? That is crazy.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Oh no, that sounds really miserable... hope this person pulls their head in soon. I hate it when one person can ruin your whole day. When will you be going on break?

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

On break from the 20th of Dec and hopefully wont have to deal with them after that forever.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Argh, still a while to go. Hang in there, it's good that at least you know you have a hard end date with this person

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Oh that goes nowhere good.

Maybe youโ€™d like to secretly take notes of/document/bcc every single thing you can and perhaps polish your resume just in case

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I reported everything and some steps are being put in place.

Itโ€™s not my safety that Iโ€™m worried about but I do have to deal with the stubbornness and attitude which makes is very unpleasant to end the day.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I just meant if they try to undermine you or hassle you out of the job.

I know how you feel, fingers crossed it gets sorted

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I wish my boys could talk a bit more. Something was bothering one of them tonight and he couldn't get to sleep, I wish he could tell me what it was

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Depending on their ages, they sometimes lack the vocabulary to put their feelings into words, especially if they're new feelings or sort of vague feelings or worries. It's frustrating because it's hard to know what prompts to give to get them talking. Sounds like you're doing the right thing and you're there for them and they know that, that's all you can do sometimes.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Tom is the best dad , along with all the other dads here. I'm sure once they can they will talk. ๐Ÿ™‚

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Their speech was always going to be delayed because they're twins. One is putting together two word sentences pretty consistently now and the other understands everything but doesn't talk as much.

I've put together some flashcards using the program Anki and it has really helped them start recognising things and saying a few words

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (5 replies)

Listing things on Gumtree is definitely not working out - I have had less time wasting nonsense which I guess is a plus, but that's because I have had no enquiries at all (apart from the initial two scam messages which were so quick I presume were bots).

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Yeah, seems like Gumtree is more or less dead...

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'm not sure it's ever had much use here. I've bought one or two things on there before, but it doesn't really seem to get much traffic.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

It used to be a lot more active ten years ago. Maybe even pre covid

Nath@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That was my experience when I first got back to Perth and tried to use eBay. Weird how different places have different apps they use.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

It changes over time too. I used to be able to list pretty much anything on eBay and have it sell, now stuff just sits there (and there is not the volume of buyers to allow you to do the auctions any more either). Marketplace was ok-ish, but these days people don't seem to know how to communicate and mostly just waste time - and you and up wasting other people's time because you are so swamped with the dodgy people it is really hard to keep on top of messages.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (4 replies)

CPTSD lol, different acronym ๐Ÿ˜‚ it can have a lot of overlap with ADHD and autism. But nope, just good, plain ol' CPTSD haha

The executive dysfunction is one of the more prominent symptoms that overlap. Another is noise sensitivity; I gotta wear earphones when I'm on PTV because I get irrationally angry from the dings and beeps and announcements lol.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

If Catfish is referring to their cats, then it's most likely cat flu. Cat flu is caused by either Feline Calicivirus or Feline Herpe Virus, neither of which are zoonotic (they can't be passed onto humans).

Toxoplasmosis, giardia, ringworm (not actually a worm, it's a fungus), and quite a few more are zoonotic.

Catfish won't have to worry about catching anything from their cats :)

Edit: the cats could also just have allergies ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Nah, not a rock star. Too much pressure and it takes over your life. You can never do normal stuff again.

You want a single smash one hit wonder that gives you enough to live it up for a year, before you invest $10 Million or so. Then retire into obscurity living very comfortably off your investments for the rest of your life. 5% of $10 Million is an annual allowance of $500k.

If you do want a lasting career, you want someone with the wealth and lifestyle, but not the fame. Someone like Dianne Warren or Max Martin. You can walk safely down the Street and nobody knows who you are. The only circles you're famous in are rock stars and movie directors.

A โ€œToast Sandwichโ€ from an 1865 recipe created for people with various digestive issues. Itโ€™s literally a buttered toast between two slices of non toasted bread.

A big effort sandwich would probably be a Carne Asada Torta with many elements and long marinade times. Personally, I would slow cook a large chunk the meat for this one to use with other dishes as well.

It would take nothing fancy to write this on AWS or Azure in the free tiers. It's a few lines of code and be more testable and easy to control and maintain IMO. But open to those suggestions.

Not doing a code review here despite having feedback. A child could write and support that (said the former child dev).

GAhhHhh, platform of choice? Language of choice? Cloud based or my private local cloud? Does anyone even care about this? I'm happy just playing computer games and hacking away at my stuff.

I recall you are using iPhone? Can just say to siri "set timer for 12am" and it'll set a timer (not alarm).

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I could have set a timer yeah. I just wasnโ€™t sure if I was def on DT duty or not

It'll be a miracle today if I get any quiet time at work today.

On to my 4th coffee now, I could make it to 5 today the rate I'm going!

Looking forward to the end of the day and pondering if I should go get some more groceries or just go straight home and worry about it later in the week.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (5 replies)

be careful with that stuff

years ago I was studying my arse off for exams and had so much coffee I got palpitations

( I totes aced the exams tho, average of 90 over everything )

Duenan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Thankfully it's only instant coffee, it's weak as piss as well.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I've definitely has cases in the past when I've had brewed coffees and lattes with extra shots give me the shakes and a buzz , that's usually the time when I recognise that I've had enough real coffee for the day.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

caffeine is a real drug

as is nicotine

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

I've done that too. Also got quite nauseous and felt generally unwell. I was about to go to the doctor when I realised what the cause was, I've been careful to limit my caffeine intake ever since.

Can we come to an arrangement in which you make me breakfast regularly?

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

$100 a pop and your own transportation

What's the best way to get white socks / clothes looking like new again? In hindsight, not the greatest idea to wear new white crew socks on a dusty hike. I soaked in Napisan for hours before washing but they still look dirty.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Sards wonder soap. Put a sock on each hand, grab the wet soap and lather the shit out of them, then chuck them in the wash with the soap still on.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

ok, I might try that with some cool tea towels I've got that I just can't get white

( and it's no wonder my nails are always wrecked )

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

You'll know it works if the suds turn a slightly different colour (dirt coming loose).
