This is an accountability post. I've decided it's time to give up the smokes so I have a plan set. I've joined My fitness pal because I don't want to substitute smokes for food, nicotine patches, vapes etc. Im incorporating more exercise as a distraction. This is an experiment. 10 smokes a day for a week. 9 the week after. 8 the week after etc. I should be smoke free in 10 weeks or in jail because I've killed someone. I can do this because I am strong and stubborn.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

It took me a hundred goes to quit, keep at it.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

You can do it, and that sounds like an excellent plan. I quit by gradually going down in strength, and when I got to the really low ones they were so disgusting I just stopped.

If it doesn't work then I'll try something else but I've gotta give it a go.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 0 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Congratulations on making an awesome decision for your health! Cutting down with a view to quitting is a great idea. It worked for me anyway. I got down to 6 a day and then quit. I worked out it was taking 10mins to smoke a cigarette so I was wasting an hour a day smoking and complaining that I didn't have time to do this or that. I also used lozenges and the spray.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

Your posts everyday have inspired me to sort out my own health journey. Please keep posting.

We've hired a Camry for our upcoming US trip, so I just went down to the Toyota dealership with our 3 large suitcases to see if they fit in the boot. And they do! I'm actually really impressed with the boot size.

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

That is a big boot. Reminds me of this scene from Wonder Boys - https://youtu.be/5N0oMqy-CQQ

omoikiri@aussie.zone · 13 pts · 3y

Oh no. New neighbours moved in last week a few doors down. They have been playing extremely loud edm with a very intense bass for the last 2 hours now. It’s a Saturday, it’s not late, so I don’t mind them being loud or having a party, but I just went to put some rubbish out and there’s no party. No cars or people. Just really obnoxiously loud music. Which means they’re just listening to it like this for fun…

As long as they turn it off once it gets late. I hope they do. An incredibly elderly couple live directly across the road from them and I can imagine them getting pretty distressed by it at the level that it is right now, even.

I’ve recently started listening to audio books. It’s helped with motivation to do things like going for a walk or doing housework, because I can now associate those tasks with looking forward to hearing the next part of the story. Stripping the bed and laundry, here I come without a scowl.

vanishing_spies@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y

hell yeah to audiobooks, a good book can make work go by so fast. If you're not already using it look into Libby, by OverDrive cause alot of good audiobooks are available at the library for f r e e

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y (3 replies)

What genres do you like? Can maybe recommend some good ones

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (2 replies)

Happy to give most things a go, expand my genres! General fiction, softer sci fi, crime mysteries, dystopian, literary, pop science and history are all things I’ve read on paper. Not really into sports or pulp romance, but other than that willing to try things.

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Strong strong recommendation for Project Hail Mary from Andy Weir if you haven't already read it. It is softer sci-fi, wouldn't want to spoil it too much. Production of the audiobook is very good.
Zero Day Code - John Birmingham is a lot of fun. Dystopian trilogy and one of my favourites of the genre. Widespread EMP style collapse as it happens

Having successfully concluded both breakfast and lunch, may I now present for the delight of the DT:

::: spoiler Afternoon tea

Image: One kiwi fruit, expertly sliced into two symmetrical halves. Presented with a contrasting red combination knife and spoon, artfully placed on a carfully folded square kitchen napkin, adorned with the label designating the New Zealand origins of the fruit. The placement of the red utensil, green kiwi fruit, and white napkin pleasingly mirror the colours and arrangement shown on the kiwi fruit label.

Breakfast/lunch:

Image: broccolini sauted in butter, garlic, chilli, salt and pepper, add Briesling sardines, a some fried eggs to finish
Edit: also juice of half a lemon

Duenan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y

I love broccolini. They looks delicious. Thanks for the photo

StudChud@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

Hot damn 🤤 foodporn in the purest meaning of the word

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (5 replies)

Look at Mr Moneybags over here who can afford broccolini!

No but that's a tasty, hearty and most importantly easy breakfast. I am pondering what to do with my tinned cod liver and apparently it goes nicely in egg salad.

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (4 replies)

A bunch was on special for 2.80 at Woolies, impulse bought it 🤷‍♂️ can't imagine a much easier, tastier or healthier meal

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Worse things have been impulse bought for $2.80.

Broccolini is the shiznits though, even if I'm still salty that they can charge more for it than its parents (broccoli and kai lan).

Shit, now I have a craving for broccolini ...

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

I'm on broccoli's side. I look at broccolini and think you poor skinny, limp substitute but broccoli is like lush and I look for the purple bits. Plus when you cook broccoli right magic happens in your mouth.

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Takes less time to grow... Costs more money... Story checks out I guess 😕

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

I've gone down a rabbit hole trying to find how one can grow them in a home garden and the seeds are definitely not as readily available... I'm tempted to splurge on this packet here and distribute it to various friends and see if by our gardening powers combined we can break the retail stronghold on outrageous broccolini prices.

Electric fences wouldn't help, they just walk from the station. What we need is better mental health services, but as long as people say they want better services but actually vote for tax cuts that's not going to happen.

shockingly good practical FX make up

Believable characters

Brutal

Never goes cheesy in the third act

Includes a WTF scene (always enjoyable)

9/10

This sounds like @Goddess_Amaterasu 's cup of tea?

Goddess_Amaterasu@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (4 replies)

Correct. It would be my cup of tea. You know me :) It’s on my to watch list. It’s a A24 movie and the few A24 movies I’ve seen has been pretty good

9/10 is very high ranking though. If/when I get the chance to watch it, I can tell you my thoughts, if anyone is interested

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

You must share them here for us all! I don't like horror usually but I loved shit like Parasite where it turned into that and, of course, I've liked A24's stuff so far as well. I'll be on the lookout for more reviews.

useless_modern_god@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y (2 replies)

We are A24 crew here as well. Reading your other comments I think we appreciate different aspects of the horror genre. You will probably rate it lower than I did. Train to Busan was very good but I wouldn’t call it a scary movie.

Hereditary is probably top 3 all time scariest movies for me. So that’s the sort of headspace I’m coming from.

Goddess_Amaterasu@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Yeah I’ve watched all types of horror but you’re right we do enjoy different horror. I watched hereditary and thought it was alright. Personally wouldn’t rate it very high. And yeah train to Busan wasn’t scary but it is loosely classified as horror. So I use the terminology on it. Can’t remember the last time I was scary by any horror tbh. Maybe when I was a kid

jon_longworth@mastodon.au · 1 pts · 3y

@Goddess_Amaterasu @useless_modern_god

Been a long time horror fan

Gotta say that Hereditary is one of the best. Saw it at the movies and if the viewing gods are with you at the time it just rocks

it was the wording, it was bad and it has stuck

We were told Social Distancing was good.

They should have used the wording Safe Physical Distancing. It's less anti-social.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I put it down more to a sort of tribalism, where people pulled into different groups (pro/anti vax, lockdown etc) who all denigrated each other. There is a constant increase in polarisation of all views, political and otherwise, where people are focus on tearing down the "opposition" rather than trying to find any sort of compromise or consensus.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

yes, that too

Duenan@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 3y

I agree. I just want a hand up as thanks or acknowledgment when I gave way to someone in a narrow street or let someone in.

I barely get any post covid. It’s the simplest easiest way to say thanks and people can’t be bothered or just plain rude.

And that’s just with giving way or letting someone in.

After a bit of a rest when I stretched out on the bed and was promptly pinned by the cats, I've been working on Operation Sort Shit.
Tackling Mum's room which has been a chuck everything in spot for the last month - left bookcase full of old paperwork cleared, now tackling the bedframe (got rid of the mattress last year) which had stuff piled on it. Also took advantage of the weather to do some washing - the thermals are on the line and almost dry and the teatowels which I had put aside to wash are now washed and on line line, with a third load in.
Now relaxing with a cuppa and considering lunch.

Went on a roam around the area (by car...) to pick up random bits and bobs. Bought some watercress and snake beans to satiate my veggie craving after seeing that broccolini post this morning.

What I'm most excited about though is this haul of last-chance veggie punnets I got from a local nursery!!! Silverbeet (not confident it'll do well), the most dire spearmint (who knows how this one will go), and a nice light pink onion rarely found in most shops (I reckon these have a chance). The cashier must've been very grateful to get these out because she put through the healthy looking full price foxgloves at a discount too.

::: spoiler Guess how much I paid for these... 4 punnets on a deck as described above

...$4!! In total, including the foxgloves. How could you not buy them? If even 25% of the sad sack rescue plants turn out to be winners that'll be very satisfying. :::

Bought two punnets of poppy seedlings too. Planted out the rescue babies and 1x poppy seedlings today. I'll do the foxgloves and other poppy punnet tomorrow. Hopefully by the time my cousin comes home in two weeks they'll all be nicely established. Gotta find some cheer in the fact that this winter seems really alarmingly warm...

If I can clear enough space to access my bike and finish fixing it up to use again it will be helpful for my long-term exercise plans.

I've successfully moved from bed to couch and applying a heat compress to a couple of bruises on my leg. You ever completely forget how you acquire bruises? Scary.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Fairly frequently. Until I worked out that I was hitting my shins on my bike pedals every time I started off after a traffic light. One doesn't bruise, but 3 or 4 in a row does create a bruise. Upper thigh bruises were desk corners at my office. Changed the way I move through space and problem disappeared. Arnica works.

I present to you Dinner tonight.

::: spoiler Pasta with chicken from drumsticks in bolognaise sauce. :::

Will freeze the drumstick bones and then make stock out of them after I’ve cooked them all.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y (10 replies)

Ducked out early and picked up some chicken drumsticks. Not pleased that they went up on price amoungst other things.

Now I have to think about how to cook them and if I should combine them into a pasta sauce and eat it with pasta.

In other news the sun is glorious and nice and warm and I’m about to get some toast and make a real coffee

bananafungus@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 3y (6 replies)

Roast then use the bones to make stock.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (5 replies)

Hmm I’ve never made stock before.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (4 replies)

So damn easy. Pack chicken bones and a carrot and onion (chopped or not according to how many fs you give) in a slow cooker or rice cooker or big pot on stove. Add water until everything is just covered. Turn on to very low heat (slow/rice cooker needs low setting heat not the keep warm function) and wait until it starts to simmer (occasional bubbles). Don't cover the pot for this stage, which can take up to an hour. Leave it on very low heat for another two hours with the lid ajar. Stock is now made. Pour through a strainer to remove the veg & bones and toss them into the compost or bin. Keep the liquid in a bowl in the fridge overnight where it should set fairly solid. Scrape off any fat that's on the surface and toss it as above. Remelt the stock, then pour into storage containers or ice cube trays. Freeze or use within 2 days.

Veg stock usually doesn't need to be skimmed but can be used or frozen straight away. Use peels and ends and other unused bits of your regular veg to make it, except don't use potato or cabbage tribe. Only needs about 1 hour of first boiling. Don't re-boil veg stock as this spoils the flavour imo.

If not freezing chicken, beef or pork stock, then it needs to be re-boiled every 2 days to kill germs. Flavour improves with each re-boiling too as water evaporates.

Beef and pork stock is the same as chicken, except the first boil can go for 4-5 hours. Marrowbones make excellent beef stock. As do rib bones. Check the pet section of the supermarket for these. You may like to roast beef bones for half an hour in a hot oven to make them brown before making stock with them. Then the stock will be a nice brown colour perfect for stews etc.

I would caution against adding salt or garlic to the first boil of a stock. These really should go in the final dish imo.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Thanks for the advice!

I have some coordination issues because I’m not cooking all the drumsticks in one go I think so that might make it hard to make the stock.

I also have a slow cooker I haven’t used yet so it might be a good opportunity to use it for the stock.

Dumb question but what would you use the stock to make after it’s made? I haven’t personally used stock for making anything.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

Thanks. Might do that.

Next step is what to use the stock for.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y

Woohoo, a stock virgin! Basically, it's a flavoured liquid. You can add stock to stirfries (one or two icecube portions) to massively help out the sauce. You can heat about a cupful of stock per person and cook vegies in it, then blitz to a puree for a lovely soup. When stewing anything, using stock instead of water. It makes a delicious gravy with zero effort. In fact, it's worth making stock just for gravy .... you only need a simple roux and add stock for a basic gravy, and then put in any additional flavourings such as garlic, mustard etc. Stock of any kind just upsizes the flavour component of any savory dish. My personal favorite is to add about 50% stock to water when cooking rice by the absorption method. Gamechanger! No need to salt the rice, and the depth of flavour is amazing. Fish stock cooked rice is particularly delicious.
Re drumsticks. Once the meat is eaten, chuck the bones in a baggie and then into the freezer. When you have 6 of these available, you have enough to make a small batch of chicken stock. I usually go for 2 chicken carcasses (fresh or frozen) bone only plus carrot and onion as above to make about 1.5 litres of stock if you break up the carcasses so they are flattish in the slow cooker.
But soup or ramen would be a good intro to stock. And easy.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

You should baked them that way you can eat them with some veg and/or put them in a pasta. Cold ones can be made into a sandwich.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Yep. I’ll probably end up doing that in the air fryer.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Agree with roast. Sprinkle on some oil, salt and if you want to go up a notch add some dry spices like paprika or a spice mix. An easy way to make them extra tasty is to rub in a bit of chicken stock powder, to get that ‘just like a bought one’ flavour at home.

Yay, my first ever penalty rate shift at new jerb starts at 7. I'm physically a but stiff and sore, so the 5 minute warm up routine will be a must today. I also need to quit vaping. Now I'm fitter I can notice the crap way it makes me feel. I'll take my own advice I gave spud last night and use those nicotine lozenges. Probably just switch my addiction over, but at least my lungs can have a break. Vapes are waaaay to addictive and I was born a freaking addict which is good to finally understand and know I have to accept it.

nterestingly, people are proud of me for taking positive steps and doing actual work on my substance abuse problems. Also, thanks to realising I'm trans, I really love my body now and only want it to grow and change with quality new parts. I don't even care I have a slowly re-growing bald dome. It's going to be interesting to see how much hair I re-grow so I'm growing it out and it looks crap as. Wigs and hats fix that.

EDIT: happy saturday everyone.

A definite yay for penalty rates. It makes it a bit better to be stuck inside looking out at the sunshine when there is extra pay to compensate.

Coles texted me that my delivery couldn’t be made and to contact them. Gave me a small credit for it but they’ve still got hold of the main payment. /facepalm

Googled to double check it was the legit customer service number, talked to a robot on the phone who sent a chat link…

Clicked it and it did seem legit but the whole thing skeeved me out. Exited and used the online form which I should have done in the first place. I really don’t like texts about ‘issues’ with deliveries and being asked to click links to external sites. Even after asking a friend if it was safe Coles could really have gone about that in a less sus way. 😬

Day 3 completed. I was nearly going to swap tomorrow's rest day with today, but I knew I'd regret it. Had to dig deeper than usual! Today I took the mini peelers to see Across the Spiderverse and then to Timezone. Timezone is getting a bit shitty; a lot of the games we like were broken or not working properly. We had some late lunch and then went to Games World and EB Games. We bought some board games (The Chameleon, Block Party and some new UNO cards to replace our very worn out ones) and I also bought the Minecraft cookbook, looks interesting and I'm looking forward to making some of the things in there. We wandered all around the place and I think we all stayed out a bit too long and we were all a bit tired! When they were little I used to have a 2 to 3 hour limit for going out. Partly I was managing my anxiety disorder and partly the kids would kind of hit the wall around that time and start to get tired and shitty of mood. I got home and the old "what's for dinner" thing started. So I made a simple dinner and just ate some veggies myself. I quite often do that, meat and veg for everyone else and veg for me. Then I exercised.

Hey, does anyone know anything about Golden Berry/Peruvian Ground cherry? Mr Peeler's cousin has a plant she wants to give me, and I don't know much about them.

So update on the issue with Ratchet and Clank if anyone really cares. This game needs an SSD to run efficiently which is CRAZY, like I haven't had this issue with Spider-Man on the PC, or even Sackboy for PC. So talking to the devs, they're like "I can't find an issue in your files" like... okay, if I didn't have an issue I wouldn't message you. But I've moved the game from the D drive to the C drive (I don't like to put games on the C drive as that's only like less than 500gb. And guess what, it froze last night after playing it, faster than before.

So decided to play some today and it's worked, I moved the graphics to the lowest it can be and it seemed to work fine. Pretty pissed off about it tbh, because my PC can play the game at recommended levels, I can have the graphics as high. I can play The Sims 4 fine and the The Sims 4 is so resource heavy (even though EAXIS says it's fine.... it's not).

This game needs an SSD to run efficiently which is CRAZY

Da fuk. I'm right there with you. Da fuk.

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Like sure SSD's will help in playing games, totally. But the fact that I have issues with it on the HDD is stupid crazy.

Guess I'm awake. Usually coming back from night shift I wake up around 3am, so 5-5:30 is actually pretty alright. I don't have to be up until 9am so I think I'll pop something pretty on to watch and remain in bed a little while longer.

So…apparently there are four missing people in a Defence chopper crash. Their families have woken up to something fucking horrible.

Watching Bupkis and it's strangely sweet and kind of endearing.

Not a huge Pete Davidson fan, but the show is pretty aiite

StudChud@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Pete Davidson has linecook energy - I'd fuck him. 🤷‍♀️

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

There's something strangely charismatic about him, but he's very plain and forgettable at the same time.

I give him a hetero 6/10
