That waterfront property is the bikeway. That's the problem: that they asked to, and the government let them, turn our most important bikeway into a square where people are likely to hang out. The equivalent of taking Coronation Drive and "activating" it by putting public markets on in it.
Unless you mean somewhere else, in which case I'm not sure.

Or say, the equivalent of taking a dedicated bike path along the front of the river near the old Howard Smith wharves, and turning them in to a shared space, where cars, bikes and pedestrians all mingle around children and drunk folk

Hehehe. Yeah. QW doesn't even have the excuse of maybe possibly not being able to know what would happen, because we can point directly to the mess that HSW has been to prove why this design of QW was always going to be bad.
At least it sounds like BCC might be about to force HSW to fix that mess.

Oh right, inside the building. lol, yeah. Hold this event instead of robbing people at the pokies.

I see "asked to" in the title. Why is the response not "no way, get fucked, fuck off"?

There were gates put in place and bouncers to prevent people from riding straight through. You could still get off your bike, walk past the bouncer, and then ride to the next gate, which plenty of cyclists were doing.
Personally one of the issues is the casino bouncers doing traffic control. Even as a compliant citizen I have been berated and harassed by bouncers.

It's so frustrating, but not at all surprising. The terrible design ruining the bikeway was predicted to cause problems back when the then-Labor state government (side note: many in the BT comments are blaming BCC for this. Unfortunately, as bad as BCC are, this particular problem is not their fault.) allowed Star to design it that way. Their shitty temporary design during the building of their mega-casino got a pedestrian killed, and now they're wanting to do the equivalent of shutting down Coronation Drive or Gympie Rd for 7 hours a day starting right before peak hour, every day for nearly 2 weeks.
