.world mods are still frantically pissing into the wind, I see.
firegem@lemm.ee · 84 pts · 1y
I lost all faith in .world after they banned piracy communities; unbanned them after user unrest; and when the hype died down, silently rebanned them all.

This statement kind of confirms that the hate towards things like the mod mentioned by the OP is hated based on populism, not common sense.

First of all, she identifies as "she", because that's what she is, a cis asexual woman. Surely you knew signing up that Lemmy doesn't take kindly to transphobia, not even the people in this community.
Second, what she said was apologized for and forgiven years ago. In your inclination towards forming a grudge, what you're implying right now is people cannot change. I see you tried to spin the same claim on the post itself in order to gang up on her. If guilt for a past interaction never expires, we'd be here all day pointing fingers left and right at people because most people who were born before the year 2000 will have memories of not understanding the transgender issue.
Maybe @shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee was right to ban you.

Similar to why I stated that I'm unfit to run for a local public office. I've been too open about my views and too aloof with my choices and it could be used against me. But I get you.
Calling for someone with a more refined comment history to start a new Ask Lemmy, assuming someone is willing. We shouldn't let .world push people around.

World seems to be presenting itself as Reddit 2.0, and has been for a very long time. It's also where a lot of the default subreddits came, which meant the same mod team and probably a few power users.
Which is not inherently bad, but I'd like the Reddit culture to stay on Reddit as much as possible.

Won't tolerate blind alignment with Luigi? Yikes that's a lot of work, they're going to have to ban like 1/3 of the entire fediverse.
Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 34 pts · 1y
I know right? It's utter madness. And they already tried and failed to clamp down the support for Luigi on LW before this. It's got, "this is gonna backfire" written all over it.
GrundlButter@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 13 pts · 1y
I wish I had your optimism. Personally, I feel like the world tends to try to clamp down pretty good on violent activism, and often for understandable reasons. I had hoped this time was different, that this time it was a uniting sentiment despite our many other divides in America. Instead, I often heard my conservative colleagues ironically admonish political violence over the past month.
We can't seem to agree on a single thing, not even to despise the people killing our friends and family, and robbing us blind.
CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1y
Is it blind alignment with Luigi to say that he's innocent until proven guilty, a right afforded to him by the Fifth Amendment?
That his guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt?
That the case against him is circumstantial at best?
GrundlButter@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1y
I'll agree with you on points 1 and 2, but as for the case being circumstantial... That honestly depends on the veracity of the confession that was found on him. Meaning to say, unless the evidence was planted, which is possible, it's trivial to determine that the act happened.
Personally, I just think it's justified. Brian Thompson was a murderer that would never face consequences, because for some reason, if you murder and torture people by policy and pen, it's totally legal. That ain't right, and if we can't reform the system to bring these murderers to justice... Well... You're gonna have some vigilantes, and they will be justified in their actions, and they will be celebrated by their peers.
Free Luigi, and point him in the direction of Anthem's CEO.

PTB all the way matey. Who gets to define which advocacy is "wrongful"? Are they going to start banning people for advocating for the oil and gas industry as well? That's arguably much more "wrongful".
Also, there's no mention of "wrongful advocacy" in either the community sidebar or the LW TOS afaik, so presumably it's just a made up rule.

The funny thing about this is, when the .world mods were being insanely prohibitive of any speech involving Luigi, and censoring discussion if the event when it happened, the excuse they used was since the server is in a European country, it's illegal to foster speech that "promotes violence."
I changed my server then, as did many others, after witnessing the censorship, but it's fun to see now the mask-off answer of just not liking Luigi.

PTB. other considerations aside, like 2/3rds of the internet has a politics crush on Luigi. at some point mods gotta just accept that Luigi jokes are gonna be everywhere, like 9/11 jokes. and honestly overall, censorship of jokes makes them more funny and therefore more long lasting. barbara streisand type beat.

Broadly, .world is fairly obviously mirroring the sycophantic policies of X/Meta/Reddit.
The only real question I have is whether it's primarily rooted in ambition or fear - whether the admin are actively trying to be admitted to the ranks of Trump-approved™ social media, or if they're just afraid that if they don't kowtow, they're going to get TikToked.
GoldenCow@lemm.ee · 15 pts · 1y

WatDabney@sopuli.xyz · 11 pts · 1y
Ah... yes.
It became obvious to me that something was up with the announcement a while back that said, once you sifted through all the diversionary puffery and bullshit, that .world was going to follow Vichy Twitter's and Meta's lead and allow hate speech and misinformation.
But I assumed they were doing that for the same reason Meta is - to suck up to Big Baby Fascist. I hadn't considered that they were doing it to suck up to Meta.
Now it all makes sense.

The proofs and even what some of your arguments imply say otherwise. It's redundant to clarify since I'm not from the World instance, but it would be putting words in my mouth to say "luigi is committing a genocide and Israel did nothing wrong", as I simply condemn him for a murder he had almost every reason not to resort to especially considering his motives (and I condemn both sides of the Israel war going on right now). If one person stands by what Luigi did, it is wrong; if a hundred people do, it's still wrong; if a million people do, it's still wrong.

If sensibility is an opinion to you, that explains a few things. Of note, the discussion where much of this took place in the first place was one about Elon Musk supposedly giving the Nazi salute and how it's alarming to consider it protected under free speech. Saying it's bad to say "death to all [insert random minority here]" isn't an opinion, is it? Practically speaking, this is what you both (and the Luigi fandom as a whole) are doing in all but name.
Rivalarrival@lemmy.today · 8 pts · 1y

oce@jlai.lu · 3 pts · 1y
Needs clarification.
Maybe they just don't want people to promote murder as a form of political action, although the log is not clear.
That would be a pretty common position, probably aligned with the rules of most communities on Lemmy and can be completely unrelated to protecting corporations, the system or whatever other people are jumping to.
Susaga@sh.itjust.works · 16 pts · 1y
Health care executives sentence millions to death because saving their lives isn't profitable. If you kill someone attempting to take your life, that's self-defence.
I am on board with promoting self-defence as a form of political action.
oce@jlai.lu · -4 pts · 1y
In my country, physical self-defense is relevant to the moment of the aggression and is required to be proportional (which is complicated, I concede). If you later go look for the aggressor to exercise your right to "self-defense", that's vengeance and personal justice, not self-defense anymore. This is usually forbidden in democratic countries because it could have a lot of negative effects of society.
Overall, unless the laws and logic are very different in the USA, I don't think this could be considered self-defense. This is also not going to stop the abuse by insurance companies since thousands of people can replace this guy, so it's more about sending a message, isn't it. What do we usually call the method of killing people to send a political message?

Susaga@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1y
"Moment of aggression" is an interesting point, especially when the aggression is drawn out over a period of months. If someone puts an explosive collar on your neck, then every moment until the collar is disarmed should count as a moment of aggression.
I will accept that the attack was not proportional, but not in the way you think. The initial aggression took thousands of lives, drawn out over an agonising amount of time. Luigi took one, and it was quick.
The message was supposed to change how healthcare is dealt with, and to save lives as an extension. The hope is that one of the thousand will accept the message and change their behaviour to protect themself. It's the same as the hope that a punch will make your attacker stop punching you. That punch is self-defence, even if it doesn't work.
Final note? The fact that "stop letting innocents die for profit" is political says a LOT.
oce@jlai.lu · -2 pts · 1y
The point of the "moment of aggression" is that there is no way any democratically legitimated power can protect you immediately in the moment of a physical aggression. Unlike an unfair insurance system where you should be able to get legal protection and sue to claim your rights. If the system doesn't protect one's rights enough, then one should work on improving it through getting involved in the democratic process. Are they voting? Are they demonstrating? Have they done everything they could to support the politicians that defend their values, or risked themselves to carry the burden of becoming one? Killing people is just going to illegitimate your opinion, and also probably negatively impact the other people who share it too.
Any intervention on society, with a goal to impact it, is political, I don't know what surprises you there.
