I feel like a version of this guide gets reposted weekly, but it's always out of date.

u/theFallenWalnut over on that other site updates these regularly.

They also now link to !purchasewithpurpose@lemmy.world but I don't see anything posted there. Maybe a better place to start reposting these

Tidal is owned by Block Inc, listed in the US, founded and run by Jack Dorsey, formerly of Twitter.

Is there a specific reason why Spotify is not suggested as an alternative to YouTube Music and Apple Music?
To my knowledge they are a Swedish company.

That is fair, I was not aware of that

I imagine the us political environment enforces such behavior to maintain a market position in the future.

I don't see it as a political statement but rather as a symptom of the political environment.

In EU you don't need to bribe politicians to do business

Spotify is cancer

saimen@feddit.org · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Yeah but still I rather use a company like spotify than companies from a fascist country. And spotify replaced youtube for me which I lately mainly used to watch veritasium which is now also available on spotify (even without the in-video ads).

Humanius@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Wait.. Since when does Spotify host video content?

saimen@feddit.org · 2 pts · 1y

I had the same reaction. But apparently it does. I guess because they realized there is no real alternative to youtube.

Humanius@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That may be, but shouldn't it be up to people to decide for themselves whether they want to support Spotify or not?

brrt@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1y

And people can decide for themselves. Just as the author can decide to include/exclude things they deem appropriate.

I love how the alternative to American chatting apps is yet another centralized American chatting app running on a plethora of American services from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Cloudflare etc. And based on phone numbers where they can easily cut down comms for Europeans at any given time the US gives the orders

🤡🤡🤡

saimen@feddit.org · 1 pts · 1y

Also, your phone can get located and your phone calls can be intercepted only by knowing your phone number (look up ss7 attack)

Sadly an american hedge fund has a sizeable (majority?) stake in deezer.

Libby doesn't seem to be a thing outside of NA, I just can't find any libraries that support it

fatcat@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Working it Austria at least, but of course more limited supply. Would love to find a good Audio Book Service which is not Audible. :(

klu9@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Librivox? Admittedly, only public domain books. https://librivox.org/

fatcat@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 1y

Librivox is pretty nice, although quality varies a lot. But I'm very grateful it exists.

Wasn't proton owner actively and very publicly supporting US republicans?

j0ester@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

Someone stated Proton CEO is not for Republicans.
