Sunshine Coast, Queensland

Note the fly in the bottom left corner.

I assume it must be quite smelly to attract that?

How does this form? Do the arms branch out and then rejoin? Was it some kind of "bubble" that developed various holes?

Stinkhorns basically pop out of and expand out from an "egg".

Here's an example of Clathrus rubrus emerging

That was unexpectedly awesome. Thanks for posting that!

Colus pusillus, apparently. A type of stinkhorn.

We have those in NW Florida (Emerald Coast, Hurricane Coast, Redneck Riviera)! You didn't smell it? I just had to, and oh boy, regrets, I've had a few. It smells like shit, except worse and more intense. Weird thing is, you have to get really close, nose right at it, or you would never notice.

Here's the one I smelled (right). I also find the more lacy versions like yours but don't have pics.

Okay, it's in Australia, so I'm assuming it is poisonous (like everything). But the question is: how poisonous? ;)

Nice. Patiently waiting to find one of these baddies in the wild.
