It just sounds better (or at least funnier)

swisscows.com is deffinetly worth checking out, as they not only do have a search engine, but also mail services and a messenger aswell as a vpn. And their name is kinda funny.

I said «Lemme Qwant this real quick» a couple times as a joke and now people make fun of me.

That was a bad decision on my part

lazycog@feddit.uk · 16 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Ha! Look! It's the Qwantter! /s

Honestly "I'll qwant it" rolls off the tongue nicely compared to "let me duckduckgo it" or any other alternative.

andallthat@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

duck it!

Kyouki@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

Been trying Qwant but missing many of the duck features :(

lazycog@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 1y

Added bonus to saying that: everyone ducks their head suddenly

I like it!

madjo@feddit.nl · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

It's better than "let me startpage this real quick"

Parptarf@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

«Let me DuckDuckGo til real quick»

Hell, this one:

«Let me BING this real quick»

lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network · 1 pts · 1y

Just Duck it!

I'm bummed they removed it from their logo's hover text.

biofaust@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Qwant (at least the way I would pronounce it, let's say in a French way) doesn't sound bad at all.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

I pronounce it like an Aussie, been enjoying the site and it's results. These quants are allright.

P1nkman@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'm a Kagier myself, but I don't say "I'm gonna kagi this". The word "search" still works, people understand it.

Parptarf@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

What’s a «Search»?

gingernate@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 1y

Steve ballmer made the same mistake

SchwertImStein@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 43 pts · 1y

No, no, always say "google" as "search on the web", so that they lose the trademark.

Let me Qwantatize the information

MicrowavedTea@infosec.pub · 11 pts · 1y

I'm confused, it says it's anonymous but doesn't let me search without an account?

cenariodantesco@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1y

Tried to search a random topic: instant pop up asking to subscribe to pro....

Sunshine@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 1y

Let me ecosia that real quick!

ctrl_alt_esc@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 1y

They say they have their own index, but they also say they send every search request to bing..

I'd also point out Stract: https://stract.com/about

This project was previously funded through NGI0 Entrust, a fund established by NLnet with financial support from the European Commission's Next Generation Internet program. Learn more at the NLnet project page.

The languages dropdown on the search result has "US" listed as a language, but not English. Literally unusable.

clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1y

Ooh, and you can search the fediverse!

arch@feddit.nl · 4 pts · 1y

Swisscows has actually been around for long but I don’t think there have been much positive feedback…

ColdWater@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 1y

Swisscow want me to buy the premium plan or sign in to use it (no close button to be found), I just use Qwant instead

rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

let me click on random links until the hand of god takes me where i need to be real quick

CAVOK@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (6 replies)

So it's another bing front-end. Like ecosia. Aren't there any european indexes?

napoleonsdumbcousin@feddit.org · 9 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Ecosia and Qwant are currently developing their own index in a joint venture.

marauding_gibberish142@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1y

I really wish they would build YACY integration so self-hosters can participate

CAVOK@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Happy to hear that. Not usable yet?

napoleonsdumbcousin@feddit.org · 4 pts · 1y

Not yet. The project was announced in November 2024. First results are expected in summer 2025.

chuso@fedia.io · 3 pts · 1y

Mojeek is based in the UK and they use their own index: https://www.mojeek.com/about/why-mojeek

camilobotero@feddit.dk · 3 pts · 1y

There is another project from the UK, that seems pretty promising: https://mwmbl.org/ https://alpha.mwmbl.org/ (a much nicer UI)

MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1y

Swiss cow?

We have a saying here, "Das geht auf keine Kuhhaut", "that doesn't fit on any cow hide", meaning, too much crazies/bullshit to fit even on a cow hide, let alone a pergament (hide of small game).

Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 1y

You can DuckDuckGoFuckYourself!

CreatingMachines@fedia.io · 1 pts · 1y

Let me Brave that shit real quick

swelter_spark@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 1y

I used to use Swisscows often. They usually give good results, moreso than other search sites. I only stopped using them because their site doesn't work without javascript, and I don't really use that anymore.

Mrkawfee@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Stupid question but how can I download apps like swisscows without having to go on Play Store? I have an android phone

thanksforallthefish@literature.cafe · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

In addition to fdroid (your other reply) you can uae aurora as an anonymous front end to play store.

You'll need to download it off fdroid or the git page

Bongles@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

Thank you, I didn't know about aurora and I have a "work" profile on my phone to separate out a few apps using shelter, but i didn't want to sign into Google play for updates.

jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 1y

If you really need an entire app instead of just using your browser, there's https://f-droid.org/packages/de.tobiasbielefeld.searchbar/
