When you buy from sources like humble bundle, they provide a key for you to activate the game. Each game individually has a key. At least, that's how it worked like a decade ago.

Correct. There are websites like humble bundle that you can buy games from and they deliver the games as steam keys. Fanatical is another one that has lots of bundles.
Check out isthereanydeal.com and scroll to the bottom to see all bundles from all sites. Also it's a good site to compare game deals and all the different sites deliver the games as steam keys.

Edit: played it for an hour or so. It seems pretty cool! Complete mystery about what's going on. Twin protagonists in a future setting. The art style is like a 3D version of out of this world and flashback.
