I'm a Max fan, but seriously, that overtake should have everyone in awe. I can't even comprehend how that worked.

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 7 pts · 1y

Franz Hermann might be a good driver.

lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

Incredible overtake.

lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Aston Martin's race has completely come undone.

Worx@lemmynsfw.com · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

And they didn't even have new tyres when they were given a safety car pit opportunity..

lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

They did burn up a medium during quali.

DV8@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y

This is again a race where Norris is reminding me of Bottas. So incredibly fast if he doesn't have to overtake.

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 11 pts · 1y

"We don't have a tire that can go to the end"

Microw@lemm.ee · 9 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Oof Alonso is pissed.. but he is somewhat right, his curse has been following him for over 15 years now

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 9 pts · 1y

He's not far off in his assesment to be fair. He is an incredibly unlucky driver. Monaco 2023 still haunts me.

hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 8 pts · 1y

huffs hopium

17 kph headwind down the main straight will make overtaking easier, surely

Microw@lemm.ee · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Uh, Oscar is having a bad day today

stokholm@lemm.ee · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

And the team is consistently trying to make it worse.

Microw@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

The first pitstop was on Piastri, he didn't stop at the right place

But yeah, the strategy they chose for him is bad

lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

Albon noooooooo

I feel like he shouldn't have pitted and give up track position during SC in hopes to regain it on fresher tires.

lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

Albon in 3rd! Go Weeyums!!!!

Nighed@feddit.uk · 6 pts · 1y

That's going to make things exciting!

Worx@lemmynsfw.com · 5 pts · 1y

I don't believe it, was that a fair overtake by Verstappen on lap 1??

(It was a very good overtake)

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Shame that the VSC killed what was otherwise shaping up to be surprisingly interesting with some split strategies. Fucks sake Haas.

DV8@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

Iny opinion it's still interesting though. Might be less 'fair' but that has happened before and will happen again. Generally it evens out.

DV8@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Yuki literally had one job today and he failed immediately. Let's hope he can redeem himself.

Microw@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Not a lot he could have done to prevent Piastri from going past that fast

DV8@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

He flubbed that corner to the point he lost DRS while Piastri still had it. Maybe Piastri could have done an overtake in the round after that by being smart. But Yuki just drove poorly there.

DV8@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Hadjar driving the race of his life so far. Pit stops are generally done, and we're in the latter half of the race and he's in 5th. Hope he can at least fight off the Ferraris.

Microw@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

Let's hope he can fight off the Mercedes

Worx@lemmynsfw.com · 4 pts · 1y

Oh no Alonso :(

lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Mega unlucky for Norris and McLaren. They're always choosing the wrong times to pitstop.

DV8@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

If it turns into a full safety car, it will make it easier for them to win though.

Nighed@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That's awful timing for Norris

stokholm@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

Don't worry, the team handed him a second place.

Worx@lemmynsfw.com · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Seems like going for a two stop was just incorrect. Strange to see so many teams make a mistake like that. Maybe it will change up at the end of the race

Microw@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

Well usually it would be the right call when looking at Leclerc's tire data after his pitstop and how quickly all tires seemed to fall away. This race is one of the few where you have the phenomenon of tires getting better after already having gotten worse.

Simply an unusual thermic reaction.

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 1 pts · 1y

Literally everyone could predict the two-stopper being worse, on a track like this getting caught in traffic is an absolute killer and on top of that the pitlane is mega slow. Puzzling.

Worx@lemmynsfw.com · 3 pts · 1y

Giving the place back by Leclerc seems wrong. If he was in the right, he shouldn't give the place back. If he was in the wrong, then he still let Hamilton pass Albon so he should be penalised because it's too late to give the place back

EDIT: no further investigation seems wrong given how far ahead Albon was, but maybe after we see replays it will make sense... :/

hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Albon podium?

Microw@lemm.ee · 4 pts · 1y

Albon and Hadjar within reach of the podium at least

DV8@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (11 replies)

Full safety car, so Max will not win. Probably Norris will take it now.

wes@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Feel like a “let’s make things more entertaining” safety car

bob@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 1y

Entertainment car

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The ghost of Masi lives on!

wes@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

Let’s go car racing!

DV8@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

I don't think that this would happen this early in the season tbh. And if they wanted the race itself more interesting they'd red flag it for a restart.

Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 1y (5 replies)

McLaren is too much of a clusterfuck to do that

DV8@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (4 replies)

I agree their strategy is still abysmal, but the car is still obviously better. And getting lucky with a safety car is not strategy. (And every top team and driver gets this advantage from time to time)

Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Yeah but keeping the fastest car behind the slower one is bad strategy.

Worx@lemmynsfw.com · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Idk, Verstappen kept his slower car ahead of the other faster cars and that strategy worked for him

Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 1y

The car was not slow. He was at the same pace as the McLarens

JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

Obviously it was luck. Even Norris said so!

wes@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Nice Russel train going on

Hamilton finally waking up, that's nice to see
