I've been meaning to share I really like the windchime I bought over a year ago. I got a good one from Rivers of Yarrambat and it has been great. It sounds nice, opening the door to the backyard fills the room with a nice sound, and it hasn't shown a sign of wear in that whole time.

I think placement makes a big difference, I lucked out putting it somewhere it doesn't cop too much wind, so most days it gives a nice ambient sound without going wild.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (3 replies)

These chilli oils are generally designed to be tasty but not necessarily very hot. I used to eat lao gan ma out of the jar and this stuff is probably not as spicy (this brand appears to be marketed at westeners).

I did get one made locally brand at some Asian shop a couple years ago that was definitely on the much hotter side. Wish I remembered the name. Took me over a year to finish it. Strong onion presence which I love

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Unfortunately the 2 Lt grim reaper paste is unavailable so he's been trialing all these other sauces and oils for just a hint of heat and has not succeeded. He's buying bird's eyes like you wouldn't believe. I'm living with a chilli addict.

I went to fill up before the petrol prices all jumped 60c, apparently everyone else was doing the same. The queue was out onto the road.

I also grabbed a few essential groceries while I was out - milk, coffee, cat food and cheese.

Edit: just looking at the receipt it appears I also bought "salted butt". My hot cross buns slathered with butt tasted pretty good ๐Ÿคฃ

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

A little tip just for you. If you need petrol half way, Bacchus Marsh always has the cheapest. ๐Ÿ‘

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I filled up yesterday after I forgot on Wednesday and a whole chunk of places had upped their prices overnight. 20c is one thing but 50-60c is an easy minimum $20 saving on a full tank. Luckily there was no queue at the place yesterday, I once went to fill up at the last cheap station in the western suburbs a few months ago and it took 20 mins just to get to the fuel pump. Tensions were running high with traffic blocking the side street and what have you.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I went past one last night that's generally around the middle of the trend and it had already gone up. The tank was getting pretty empty after a couple of long drives so I put nearly 50 litres in, it would have been $27 more expensive to fill up at the more expensive one. Well worth a couple of minutes wait time.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

For real. I estimated I saved about $20 on a 3/4 refill. Worth the detour. Especially if you're doing long drives. Hopefully the cycle will be coming down next time you need to fill up! I'm kind of annoyed because I thought low crude oil prices = low fuel prices overall but nope, they're still going to go up when the petrol station cartel decides to...

Might have found a store with staff more useless than Bunnings. SuperCheap Auto.

Need new headlight globes. Take them out, bring them in, ask the people there for some help. Bloke grabs a couple of the shelf and rings them up. I walk to my car, look at the box and the fitting looks wrong. Sure enough, it's the wrong type. I go back in and ask to exchange and he's trying to tell me they're the right ones.

I take one out of the box put it against one of my old ones, similar, but definitely not the same. He mumbles something like "I should have been more specific"

Mate, how much more fucking specific do you want?

He tries to help me again, and I kind of shoo him away, grab the right globes, swap them and job done.

I feel it's my fault for not grabbing them myself to begin with instead of asking for help.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I bought headlight globes at SuperCheap last year. They were supposed to be extra long lasting, which turned out to only be two months. They also didn't seem to be as bright as they should have been. I got more expensive Phillips ones sourced from somewhere else to replace them and was much happier, they were brighter and still going strong when I traded the car in.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Hope these last a bit longer. Went through a booze bus yesterday and the cop told me one of my headlights is out. No ticket, but I'm taking 0 chances.

Iโ€™ve got slack on masking after keeping it up for so long. Wondering if it would be weird to start wearing one again during flu season.

Of course itโ€™s not weird to not want to get sick but you know, itโ€™s not the norm to wear face masks in Australia like it is in Asia. And itโ€™s rare to see them now. People would probably stare, assume you were sick, or it might provoke the cooker type.

Then again I really donโ€™t think Iโ€™d fare well with the flu.

bacon@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Please do. We wear. No stares.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

lots of people are wearing masks , no one will bat an eyelid

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I still do in crowded places. And I would in more if I had more serious health issues (or still had immunocompromised peeps in my life). The biggest reaction I have had was someone moving away from me on a train when I was masked and had a random coughing fit Which is fair.

And I went to inspect an office the other day. Real estate dude rocks up. Clearly Ill. Overhear him on the phone while we are inspecting "you sick? Oh have you got what I have?". No mask, shook my hand (before I realised). ๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ก

So protect yourself!

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Iโ€™ve seen Some people wear masks still.

I donโ€™t think itโ€™s strange, epically since we werenโ€™t through a period of the majority of us having experiencing it back during the first outbreaks.

Understandable as well at the moment because of the recent news of the covid strain being a bit more aggressive.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

trying to explain the difference between an aussie sausage sizzle and a hot dog to an american friend. What would be the closest equivalent?

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Hot dogs are boiled. Sausage sizzles are 'broiled'. One little consonant makes a mighty difference to the end result.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Grilled dogs vs boiled ones.

In Canada hot dog stands do both!! Dogs are first steamed (does most of the cooking) then grilled for that charred goodness.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Sausages are just very fine mince with added fillers so I'd say pureed hamburger patty mince.

If you're feeling chilly today - consider this heat wave in Iceland

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

The Hello Fresh meal kits arrive today, which will take me through the move and the first days in the new house. Breakfasts and half the lunches are already sorted too, I just need to add in some random sandwiches.

Today I will try to finish all the packing inside & get the shed packed up. Working tomorrow for a rest, then Sunday will be packing up all the last minute stuff. I'm feeling a lot better about my packing progress after taking a van load to the new house yesterday, I was able to take a bunch of hard to pack stuff up in bags and I have a bit more space in the second bedroom to actually move and finish the packing in there.

Mr Woof and Miss Meow are both being given a food additive that is supposed to be calming (some sort of milk protein, a lady at work swears by it) and Miss Meow has Feliway spray, diffuser and Gabapentin for the moving day. They may end up calmer about the whole thing than me!

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is free on the Epic Store for anyone interested.

SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It's a kind of DnD/RPG spinoff from Borderlands 2. It's fun enough and worth grabbing for a rainy day.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

The narration in it though can get a little bit tedious and long winded.

I found my sewing machine. I wonder if it still works well, or if itโ€™s full of dust.

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Statewide Sewing Centre in Coburg does repairs - round about $150 plus parts if needed. I got my old Janome sorted there after my sister stuffed it good and proper and they are good and reliable.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

it's pretty normal for sewing machines to get dusty, just open it up and brush and vacuum and it should be ok ๐Ÿ‘
