Russian Negotiations 101. My first offer? You surrender everything, submit to enslavement, and completely disarm. Final offer. What's the point of talking to these nihilist barbarians?

There’s no need to negotiate. Trump will end the war on day one. Wait… /s
Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1y
Don't worry. Time is meaningless after covid. We're on year 3 of this 3 day special military operation that totally isn't a war.
Lemminary@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y
I like how he couldn't do shit and even claimed it's probably best to leave negotiations to the EU. Fucking TACO bullshit as always.
barnaclebutt@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 1y
Ukraine also has to tell everyone that 3.5 inches is a totally normal penis size and actually is quite big.
Over a million Russian soldiers are dead over this bullshit, their economy is likely bankrupt, and they still act like spoiled children. Wtf.
rockerface@lemm.ee · 12 pts · 1y
Well, the people that make these decisions on Russian side aren't in any danger from the war. That's the main issue here.
FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 1y
Yup. Putin doesn’t give a fuck about the average person in Russia. He’s happy sending them all to die so he can fulfill some weird emperor fantasy.

Not dead, 1M dead and injured
vivalapivo@lemmy.today · -10 pts · 1y
Questionable. According to Ukrainian posters which should be taken with a grain of salt.
Also, COVID killed about a million russians, 2 millions die yearly. So having 1 additional million people dead in 3 years is not a big toll. That's probably the logic of the Russian government - those who really decide whether to continue the war or not
phoenixz@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 1y
Covid did not kill 1 million work capable men. This war did. On top of Covid. Russia already has shitty demographics before this war and you can't on top of that have covid and then lose over a million men from your work force without feeling that. Put on top of that all the sanctions it has had, the cost of this war and the cost of restoring it's military after the beating it has had...
Then if they win they'll get a razed down country that requires enormous investments in infrastructure but also defense and heavy handed policing. All that requires enormous investments Russia doesn't have.
If they lose they'll be made responsible for the recovery of Ukraine wgich, last time I checked, is estimated to be well into half a trillion dollars.
Win or lose, they're fucked for the next decades at least.
vivalapivo@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 1y
Who are 'they'? If you talk about people who decide to continue the war - not necessarily: the power and elite are cementing and the probability of toppling Putin is decreasing rapidly with each year of militarization.
If you talk about common people, then I agree, for regular russians that's a disaster, for a tiny minority - the last opportunity to get rich.
If you equate these categories, you are a delulu

The problem here isn't really with the source but how it is read. It doesn't say "killed" but rather "approximate enemy losses" (орієнтовні втрати противника), which would also include the injured.
barnaclebutt@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y
Sigh. 300,000 dead Russian soldiers have been named by independent media. A million dead is realistic. The number of casualties is in the millions. What number of 100,000s people dead passes the threshold for you?
vivalapivo@lemmy.today · -1 pts · 1y
https://200.zona.media/
11200 as-of now. Based on your estimate of real casualties= 3x identified casualties it's more likely to be 300-400 thousand which is already a devastating number way beyond the threshold you have mentioned.
It's just weird to remind that if a side, any side claims that it has 50 thousand casualties and the enemy is beyond one million, you are being fed with horseshit and you need to just stop eating it.
barnaclebutt@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y
You entirely missed the point of my comment in order to state some pendantic bullshit. Here's a report stating 250k dead and 1 million casualties (https://www.newsweek.com/russia-casualties-ukraine-one-million-2083882). Now, fuck off troll.
MDCCCLV@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y
I don't think they're a troll, what you stated is a common misconception. And you were wrong initially. Over or underinflating casualty counts is a big deal and it's best to be accurate. It's a notoriously difficult thing to measure.
vivalapivo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 1y
Independent media like Zona named 112k, while, well, CSIS estimated 250k, which is well lesser than one million.
You too please have a good day and don't forget to drink enough water

Didn't think I would be alive to see anti-Israel post here
TwinkleToes@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 1y
? nobody mentioned Israel. Well - you did, but not sure why. I take that back - I have an idea why. I'm sure I'm going to regret responding to a 2d old burner account - but, here we are.
vivalapivo@lemmy.today · -3 pts · 1y
Because I read the title and it did sound like what Israel has been saying for days
TwinkleToes@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y
right. Well - we're not talking about Israel at all here, sorry. I'm sure there's lots of space to discuss it not in an explicitly Ukraine themed thread.

You must be thinking of the genocide, this is the proxy war
TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee · 11 pts · 1y
Well, no. It was supposed to be the start of Putin putting the USSR back together but those gloriously pesky Ukrainians keep kicking the shit out of that shithole.
vivalapivo@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 1y
IDK, really. True that NATO doesn't want direct involvement and wants Ukraine to kick Putin's ass. But it begs the question: is Russia a proxy for China or we just force the interpretation of the proxy war onto reality?
Transform2942@lemmy.ml · -1 pts · 1y
It was a throwaway quip but Wikipedia says:
So the Ukraine war fits squarely in that definition. Other examples I found cited online were Korea, Vietnam, and the Soviets in Afghanistan - all of which have a major power as one of the direct belligerents
vivalapivo@lemmy.today · -1 pts · 1y
Yup, looks like it fits the definition without a stretch
RizzoTheSmall@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y
Nihilist? Do I have a wrong understanding of that word or are you accusing Russia of simply believing that existence itself is meaningless and futile and that the universe is so unbelievably massive and enduring that nothing humanity can possibly ever achieve will even register as a cosmic blip?
