Maybe some kind of lobster trap, or just something made just to pass the time?

Buckminster Fuller only coined the word "geodesic" in the late 1940s, so it's hard to know what to search for!

Not sure about that specific shot, unfortunately. But I do know he was in the Navy, and family lore has it that he punched an officer to prevent a promotion that would have resulted in him not going on a big expedition.
