Oh that is sad news. He was such a cutie.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

oh ๐Ÿ˜”, so many many hugs

and it's just a part of life even tho it's so cruel

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

It's always hard when a pet passes, they're part of the family.

Cancer is difficult with dogs too, because their heart beats so fast it can spread through the body quickly. On the flip side, I heard it means they can recover from strokes quickly as a result

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Iโ€™m so sorry. Itโ€™s one of those things where there are contributing factors but we never really know why

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Oh no.

So sorry to hear that.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

So sorry. Loosing pet is so hard. Hope you are being kind to yourself. Thereโ€™s probably nothing more you could have done, animals often donโ€™t show symptoms until illness is advanced.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 1y

On the one hand, it's great to feel useful and to be doing stuff for family.

On the other, I totally forgot how easily drained I can get by being around loud people all the time. @_@

As much as I want to wean myself off screens, I am also glad I brought my devices...

sleep well and may you have sweet dreams

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y

Windy.

My security camera alerted me to a cardboard box crossing my driveway, and on our walk we followed a couch cushion blowing down the footpath. I also have a new collection of rubbish blown into the corner of my yard where it tends to gather (fortuitously it is the corner I keep the rubbish bins in).

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y (3 replies)

12 bucks for a rump steak. Gotta love a country pub.

I have yet to find out if I am lucky or it's just really bad...

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y (2 replies)

It was ok.

SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

If a pub had a choice between $12 okay steak and $35 decent steak, I'd get the okay option 9/10.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Probably better than fast food takeaway. Bargain.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Too Good To Go app is actually damn good. Basically you can place an order at participating places to get a "surprise" bag of any food that's still good but they haven't sold. It's pick-up only as far as I can tell.

::: spoiler Got all this, and more that's in the oven heating up (this is two surprise bags) for $15. :::

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

I work near a shopping centre so I should check this out

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

that looks really good, and you can choose different places for different cuisines

good idea all round

Slept better again! So maybe taking the pill at 5am is a winner.

Fingers crossed

Had a vet house call. Apparently Ms Gibson is starting to get a little too "fluffy".

The patient was not amused lol

That's great about your sleep. I've heard meds can interfere if you take them at the wrong time

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Thanks man. Itโ€™s been brutal the last 18 months. Hopefully this is it.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y

farken google sheets keeps shitting up my work screen suggesting I add pizzaz with tables!

Why donโ€™t they take some of that AI they keep stuffing everywhere, get it to look at the data, realise itโ€™s not table data and then shove it up their arseholes sideways

Catfish@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (12 replies)

At what point do I get worried my neighbour (whose name I don't even know) isn't on a long holiday and make a welfare call?

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y

If you are worried enough to ask the question here you're worried enough to make a welfare call.

Call it through to police on 000 - it might not seem like enough of an "emergency", but it is something that gets organised via 000. Don't worry you are wasting police time, they do a lot of welfare checks and there is almost never something actually wrong, but some of the time someone has fallen and is lying on the floor in desperate need of help and organising the check saves their life.

anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (6 replies)

If theyโ€™re someone you usually see getting about regularly and you havenโ€™t for a while, you could always call the non-emergency line and see what they think

Catfish@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (5 replies)

Trying to not become known as the local curtain twitching nutter. Maybe she does this every year or two? Argh.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (4 replies)

To become the local curtain twitching nutter (CTN) you need to be calling in repeatedly, probably for multiple neighbours. A real CTN calls 000 weekly as a minimum, but if you are properly commited to it requires multiple calls a day.

anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Itโ€™s a relief to know that peering through the front curtains occasionally when thereโ€™s a noise doesnโ€™t classify me as a CTN, even if I feel like one ๐Ÿคฃ

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

I'm not a CTN. I prefer going outside with my binoculars and a step ladder.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Is that an official term? ๐Ÿ˜น I think my brain can hold a bit longer but her car battery might not.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

It becomes an official term if we can get enough people using it.

SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Go knock on the door and explain that you were worried as you hadn't seen them in a while.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

This is the way. If you know any of the other neighbours you could ask if they know anything. If no explanation, then proceed to calling for welfare check.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Check to see if mail is piling up and whether bins have been moved in a while, knock on the door a few days in a row maybe, see if you see or hear anything.

And donโ€™t be afraid to call.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Mail is a good point. I now have a name.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Melbcatโ€™s kidney disease is progressing, probably because she canโ€™t eat the medical food, doesnโ€™t want to eat the home cooked medical diet or food with phosphate binder in it, and doesnโ€™t like the low phosphate food I found. She only wants high protein food that are bad for her kidneys and my options for her intolerances are limited.

But thereโ€™s hope. Iโ€™m going to get her phosphate binders compounded so either they taste better or itโ€™s a format I can directly dose her with. And thereโ€™s a different flavour of low phosphate non-chicken food she likes!!!

Expensive but this is why I pinch pennies so hard. Iโ€™m going to buy her this food

I've been noticing a lot of billboard ads from banks about scam and fraud prevention. I wonder if there's a new wave of paranoia about these things from AI because there seems to be more than usual

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

My company (finance ish) is about to switch MFA from opt-in to opt-out (on by default) for our customers to help protect from scams

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

MFA saved me yesterday, someone managed to log into my bank account but MFA was active through my app and prevented the login access.

So lucky it was in place or I would have been screwed.

Anyway password has been changed and precautions taken.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

it might not be more fraud just that banks are being made to share responsibility and cost

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I didn't pay enough attention to the recipe for the last meal kit item I was going to make for dinner and just assumed it would be in the typical 30-60 mins timeframe. But it is slow cooked for at least 2 hours. So beef stew has now been reschedulted for tomorrow night and I've got some sausages and bread rolls defrosting for tonight instead.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I'm doing chicken sausages and some baked pumpkin and vegies too , I bake them

I drink my coffee too slow while working so it always end up cold before I finish it and have to microwave it to be warm again. It's a shameful habit but I can't seem to drink it faster. I remember at my last job, others would guzzle their coffee like it was water. I'm a sip, forget and sip again type person.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

same, don't worry about it, I don't, it's my coffee and I'm the one drinking it, not them

Duenan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

Same problem here.

One thing that might help is getting a coffee cup with a lid on it to keep it warm/hot for longer.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Not a shameful habit. Sip or slurp its personal choice, drink your coffee however you enjoy it. Donโ€™t need to force yourself to be like other people. If you want it to stay warm for longer you could make it in an insulated cup?

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (9 replies)

Whenever I have a joint, I don't get the munchies. I can see how you can, I just don't feel the need to. Is there something wrong with me?

tone212_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

When I first started smoking weed I used to get the munchies bad. Eat until I was sick sometimes, my smoking friends were the same and we all enabled each other. It doesn't help that certain foods taste great when you're baked. Then came a time the craving for food just stopped completely and it doesn't happen anymore (although I rarely smoke these days).

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Old age.

I just smoke occasionally for medicinal purposes.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (4 replies)

I remember one of the first joints I had after a few bevvies, got munchies, got an ice cream pizza. That didn't end well.

Beer then grass you're on your arse, grass then beer you're in the clear!

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Wtf is an icecream pizza?

Even on its own I just drink water.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I don't get the munchies either, never have.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

The smell of food triggers me. Like when something is baking like a roast so maybe that's it.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (3 replies)

this milk allergy is making me utterly miserable, the meal replacement shakes , while so good for dieting just do not agree with me so I stopped , and then I had bread which had milk in it, the olive spread had milk, so that made me flare up again

I am going to have read labels carefully

in the meantime, to cheer myself up I;m going to make some olive bread, it's delicious and I know it will have no dairy ๐Ÿ˜ธ

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Would it be worth getting an allergy test? Then you could know if it was lactose only, or whole milk etc. Might leave some options open and you could know what to look for on labels.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Right there with you. I miss dairy so much.

::: spoiler If you wanted suggestions Nuttelex is the gold standard dairy free margarine but for cheap bulk option the Coles โ€˜regular spreadโ€™ is also pretty safe for me. You can also do as Italians do and dip the bread in olive oil.

There is plant based protein powder from Natureโ€™s Way but I donโ€™t know if they still sell the unflavoured variety (which I preferred since it doesnโ€™t contain artificial sweeteners) and it doesnโ€™t have any added vitamins or anything. I know they do have flavoured varieties like strawberry or chocolate.

Bulk Nutrients probably has vegan meal shake options but from what I remember my other intolerances precluded them so I donโ€™t have any specific options to recommend :::

Movie review

Aguirre Wrath of God. Werner Herzog. Rewatch also read an essay about it.

Very beautiful movie. Filmed on location in the Amazon jungle. Compelling story of violence and survival. Werner survived Klaus.

Nihilist to the extreme. What was the point, success is nothing , failure is nothing.

The point is if there is no point then live well and see the beauty,

Book reports. ๐Ÿ˜Š Two little books about New Zealand I bought on holiday. Kiwis and Moas and New Zealand Tress and Ferns. Who knew kiwis were so aggressive! Moas are huge. Both were tasty. The trees and ferns are all very pretty. Opinion that NZ is to Australia what Australia is to the world confirmed, it's a very weird and pretty place with unique plants and animals.

anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Didnโ€™t one of the locals offer to bump off Klaus because he was being so awful? (Or maybe that was Werner, I canโ€™t remember). Itโ€™s a trip of a movie!

everyone wanted to bump him off ...lol
