If you'd like to get into old-school, side-scrolling shmups, I like Super Hydorah a lot. For vertical, you might try Blue Revolver Reloaded.
For bullet hell I always suggest GunVein or Mushihimesama. Lot's of difficulty settings and training options there.
Most importantly, have fun! Everybody starts off bad, dying a lot, but the more time you put in the better you get. It's all part of the joy of mastering a skill.
I really enjoyed this game. The only thing that kinda annoyed me was the overly loud, bit crushed voices and sfx. I think they could've done a better job with that.

I am pretty terrible at any and all shmups I've played but reading this is rad. Anyone got any recommendations for me to try?
