I went to the opera last night, just bought a cheap ticket at the last minute. Opera Victoria doing Mozart's Abduction.
I am not a remotely knowledgeable opera-goer but I was not expecting it to be set at a hedonistic sex club, complete with gimp masks. And it was very funny. 5/5 whips and chains.
I'm not sure why people think opera is stuffy and pretentious. They do that sort of stuff a lot. I've been to a couple with full frontal nudity, and one that had a giant inflatable person they were giving an enema to (I can't remember which one or what the context was, but that bit definitely stood out!)
Opera was (and in Italy still is) a popular entertainment. I blame the Victorians for "elevating" it to high art and getting all pretentious about it. Should be sexy, rambunctious and very very funny - like Shakespeare. Sounds like a great production of the Abduction though.
Did my lower back yesterday, nothing more humbling than when your back goes out in a bad way. Getting out of bed this morning was not fun at all. I can barely move around.
Not going to be able to do any of the things I planned today, just resting up until I can see a physio tomorrow.
I let the depression get a hold of me good. Had a shower for the first time in a 4 days, and now I feel somewhat human.
Why does my depression have to have the symptom of not looking after myself? It would be much easier to deal with if it was just the absence of self-worth and a low-key sense of impending doom.
First of all, have comfy clothes available. Ones that are easy to change in and out of, easy to wash and dry. T shirts and trackies are perfect. Hoodie on top if cold.
Getting them mostly in one or two colours greatly simplifies laundry. Black doesnโt show stains, white can be bleached. Grey still looks ok if faded from hot water or oxygen bleach. Choose according to the colour of the pet hair youโre trying to hide.
Cotton or cotton rich is great especially for inner layers/anything next to your skin.
Sometimes the hardest part of showering is getting in. If you just run the water over you and get out, you tried.
If nothing else you can baby wipe under your arms or lean over the sink and wash your armpits that way then put on deodorant and a fresh shirt. (Antibacterial hand soap works well here.) And baby wipe your butt.
You can also apply powder to your body for a clean scent and to absorb oil (then put on fresh clothes).
But a cursory shower is better than none at all and will help you do it more regularly. Pits, bits and feet. You donโt have to wash hair every time.
If you just tie your hair up or use a shower cap to keep it dry and wash only what you need to, you can do a full body scrub next time. Shower puffs help there.
Sitting down in the shower is very helpful. You can gather energy or brush your teeth and thereโs less chance of falling. Itโs easier and more comfortable with a handheld shower head but not impossible with a standard one.
Itโs very tiring for me to hold my arms up/over my head and move them around with a handheld it can also risk me passing out, and a shower chair is a trip hazard for me, so I bought a suction cup holder from IKEA and put it where convenient. You can put the shower nozzle at a low height that doesnโt wet your hair, and just hang your head forward under the stream when you need to wash it.
(The Australian IKEA doesnโt seem to stock it anymore but google the Tisken handheld shower holder for an idea of how it looks. EBay also may have something similar.)
::: spoiler spoiler
:::
If crouching or sitting on the shower floor isnโt easy for you there could be Japanese style stools on eBay or maybe a foam yoga block.
Using vastly fewer products helps. Simplify. Itโs easier to just hit yourself up with one thing. An all in one wash like the kids washes is useful and rinses out well from hair, but be warned scent doesnโt play well with some peopleโs bodies, also the included conditioning ingredient will make oily hair get greasy again faster.
Currently I just use a mild โsoapโ and shampoo. I buy a detergent cleansing bar because that means I can use it on my hair, and often I would use the same bar for everything. I only stopped because it took more work to rinse out all the suds, and my hair sometimes wants medicated shampoo.
Using a shower comb under the water helps some people detangle but doesnโt do much for me.
You can wash your face in the shower. Youโre not supposed to because of the hot water and strong stream stripping skin and potentially breaking capillaries. But my goal is to get it done and get out. (Yes I would sometimes use the bar and often just rinse face.) Then afterwards I slap on some unscented lotion from the bottle at the sink.
Keep a spare toothbrush and paste in there to use even if youโre just sitting under the stream. It really helps you do it.
You can even watch or listen things on your phone while you shower as long as itโs safely out of the splash zone.
Floss picks next to your bed or at your desk. Wherever you spend most of your time. They can be used one handed while playing a less challenging part of a computer game.
A good antiperspirant is vital. Try a menโs roll on and avoid the โanti white marksโ stuff. Natural also doesnโt really work well.
If you do hair removal you can get a menโs body groomer and whiz over dry while in the stall to shave or trim. Then when you shower the loose hair gets washed down the drain. Idk about you but I am not getting cold, risking a slip, or nicking my legs while trying to get this done. Not removing hair is much easier and equally valid.
When you get out towel wrap your hair while you dry off, apply deodorant and dress, then rough dry the roots only with a hair dryer. Or just towel dry the best you can. This means you can go comb the rest of your hair sitting in bed rather than having to stand at the sink. (Shorter hair is easier to wash but more fuss for me than hair tie length.)
You can alternatively just let it dry and carefully brush it out starting from the ends when you can. Not a great choice but shit happens.
If your hair gets too oily or stays damp too long and your scalp gets flakes or bumps, thatโs mallassezia. (This is why the quick rough dry of the roots.) Sleeping with wet hair often causes it, or simply having thick hair, but regular use of dandruff shampoo according to instructions can help fix it.
Wide tooth combs and paddle or cushion brushes are easiest to manage medium length or longer hair. Knockoff tangle teezers are also good.
Dry shampoo helps but beware thereโs a risk of high levels of benzene.
Powder after showering (especially in skin folds and between toes) helps you stay fresher between showers and can be used very sparingly in hair if you donโt have dry shampooโฆ just try to use a cornflour based one rather than talc, and donโt expect it to work as well as hair specific products.
Iโm looking for a cotton terry robe to wear after drying off but they seem expensive and uncommon now.
Nuclear level bedridden days:
::: spoiler Gross.
Have a lined rubbish bin, baby wipes and a spare toothbrush next to your bed. Deodorant is nice too.
Clean your face and pits with a baby wipe. Brush your teeth either dry or with toothpaste, and spit the toothpaste into the used baby wipe or a tissue. Throw in bin. Apply deodorant if itโs in reach. Rinse the toothbrush when you get up for the bathroom or have someone rinse it for you.
You can buy pre pasted disposable brushes like Wisps but they lack fluoride and you really want fluoride.
Fluoride free or lower fluoride kids toothpastes are convenient because they can more safely be swallowed in small amounts and come in more flavours. Theyโre better than nothing as brushing will mechanically remove the plaque. But fluoride is so important especially if youโre struggling to brush.
You can also swish mouthwash and spit it into the bin or a disposable cup.
Brush and tie hair back if you can. A clipped up bun or topknot on top of your head is more comfortable than a ponytail when lying down, and reduces the chance of tangling or matting if you donโt brush it for a day or two. If you canโt do that throw on a cheap satin bonnet that might prevent tangling or matting until you can. They and satin pillowcases can be very cheap on eBay.
If youโre absolutely unable and need help doing it there are things like waterless shampoo. Unsure of cost but check eBay
:::
There you have it. Might be odd or gross but thatโs ways of making hygiene easier to maintain in the face of challenges.
Edit: Oh yeah and if you donโt frequently do thorough scrubbing showers, dead skin can build up a bit (and so can antiperspirant residue).
If you eventually get more energy after a time like that, use some exfoliating gloves from the supermarket with your soap or body wash to do a good scrub everywhere.
Or you can soak a little in the warm water and then gently use an Italy towel without soap (I usually do it after washing). Very cheap on eBay. Avoid your face or any delicate areas, scrub gently, and donโt do it more than once a week. Follow it with lotion if need be.
If your skin is sore or tight you were overzealous.
You can also slip an exfoliating mitt (similar to the gloves) over a bath sponge - both are sometimes sold at supermarkets and this means you can scrub and suds yourself with something thatโs easy to hold.

I'm sorry there are so few spaces that are, like useful and wholesome. The internet just seems to corrupt a lot of spaces meant to help us.
I had not made onion gravy before and used this recipe as a good starting point.
Some slight changes I made was using flour in the beginning instead of cornstarch at the end, as a thickener. I use a bit of brown sugar coupled with brown vinegar to kickstart carmelised onionโs cook time and finally, I ended up purรฉe ing it for a smooth texture.
The way I've felt the last couple of days I wouldn't be surprised if I had one of them mild strains of covid. I doubt I'll feel better in time for this conference I was planning to go to on Tuesday
One thing I think I need to add to my list of Annual Tasks is descaling the kettle with citric acid then pouring the contents down the toilet. I think I'll need drain cleaner to clear this thing out. Maybe a regular pouring of boiling water full of acid will get ahead of these blockages
Vinegar also works and I find the cleanup easier. There are descaling chemicals available at Colesworth for use in coffee machines etc. and these are frighteningly effective when used properly.
can also use vinegar at a half/half ratio and boil as well. Drop some bicarb down the kitchen sink, then follow with the mix, it'll boil out the drains
Another big Temu order placed, lots of supports for my vegie garden this time. It seems like only yesterday I had all of winter to organise the garden, now spring is racing every closer and I have barely anything done! I'll need to start on planting seeds for the summer plants (like tomatoes) soon, and sort out a list of the tubestock seedlings I want to buy to plant over spring.
Cooking chicken, beef, and pork for MrsGodโs ketogenic meal prep adventures. Itโs all pretty bland tasting to me. I have seen so many diets come and go.
Apparently I have too many bank accounts, ATO can only manage 20.
Edit: Tax return has now been completed (despite the annoyance of having to look up my interest manually because all the pre-fill data didn't fit). Now I just need to sit back and wait for the sweet, sweet tax return money.
If they're gonna offer an extra 1% interest for the first four months, every four months I'm opening a new account. I've had to deal with the fraud department a few times as I roll my house deposit around the place to maximise my interest.
Yes. Most of them are with Macquarie that give you the full high interest on all the savings accounts and you can make transactions directly to/from them, so I have multiple accounts set up to use as my budgeting buckets. I have automatic payments come out of each pay, then I just spend money from the appropriate account to keep track of spending instead of having to record anything seperately.
I've also got some savings with other banks, partly to get a little bit higher interest and partly so I've still got access to funds if there is a computer problem.
yah, I have a few with Bank Aust. There's the one linked to my card, personal savings, the bill kitty, the cat emergencies fund, the rates kitty, the car kitty, the house reno kitty which gets an extra interest bonus with a min 100 deposit and no withdrawls per month.
We both chuck X amount into each one every pay and then we don't ever have to worry about being short for something.
Most exciting UFC card in ages today. Main event at 2pm, we have Dricus Du Plessis, South African champion who is on an 11 fight win streak - undefeated in the UFC, up against Khamzat Chimaev - undefeated Chechnyan fighter. Chimaev is a dominant wrestler who has looked absolutely unstoppable in his rise to title contention, he is a favourite to win. Du Plessis though is a physical specimen, who sometimes looks a little uncoordinated and goofy almost, but also always finds a way to get it done. Very exciting fight
Okay, who else hates City of Angels because of the ending?
Because I sure fucking do.

Some slight changes I made was using flour in the beginning instead of cornstarch at the end, as a thickener. I use a bit of brown sugar coupled with brown vinegar to kickstart carmelised onionโs cook time and finally, I ended up purรฉe ing it for a smooth texture.

And hooray for delivery services, packing coming today and I donโt have to go out.

The way I've felt the last couple of days I wouldn't be surprised if I had one of them mild strains of covid. I doubt I'll feel better in time for this conference I was planning to go to on Tuesday
WaterWaiver@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y
:( Take care of yourself tom.
What's the conf? Anything exciting, or work required?
tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y
It's just a b2b ecommerce conference. We got free tickets because someone from head office is speaking.
I've found these conferences usually have speakers from places that are too big to fail or such weird outliers their advice isn't really applicable

One thing I think I need to add to my list of Annual Tasks is descaling the kettle with citric acid then pouring the contents down the toilet. I think I'll need drain cleaner to clear this thing out. Maybe a regular pouring of boiling water full of acid will get ahead of these blockages
TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y
Vinegar also works and I find the cleanup easier. There are descaling chemicals available at Colesworth for use in coffee machines etc. and these are frighteningly effective when used properly.
tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y
I have way too much descaling chemicals for my coffee machine so I could give that a go if the latest batch of drain cleaner doesn't work
Taleya@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y
can also use vinegar at a half/half ratio and boil as well. Drop some bicarb down the kitchen sink, then follow with the mix, it'll boil out the drains
tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y
I'll try that in conjunction with everything else. The other drains are going down fine but it won't hurt
Taleya@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y
don't put any corrosive chemicals down there, when the plumber needs to come they'll hate you.

Apparently I have too many bank accounts, ATO can only manage 20.
Edit: Tax return has now been completed (despite the annoyance of having to look up my interest manually because all the pre-fill data didn't fit). Now I just need to sit back and wait for the sweet, sweet tax return money.
Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y
You have more than 20 bank accounts??
SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y
If they're gonna offer an extra 1% interest for the first four months, every four months I'm opening a new account. I've had to deal with the fraud department a few times as I roll my house deposit around the place to maximise my interest.
RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y
Taleya@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y
yah, I have a few with Bank Aust.

Very exciting fight

a remake I do not like
Bruno Ganz was so good in the original
and the original, Wings of Desire, is one of those movies that was very influential for me
there is a debate in the movie,
2, if we don't no one will
and the corollary, if we want something good to happen it's up to us to do it
I love this movie and after I moved to Europe I loved it more, and yet I have only seen it a few times
