It's all over.

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 17 pts · 338d (3 replies)

And I'll have to migrate all over again.

clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 338d (2 replies)

To what, do you think?

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 6 pts · 338d (1 reply)

A good chunk to Bato. For other stuff, not so sure.

AntiBullyRanger@ani.social · 3 pts · 338d

oof. hopefully bato.onion works still.

Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 17 pts · 338d (5 replies)

How is it that reading manga is one of the most unrealistic types of media these days? $20 for four chapters you can finish in an afternoon is impossible for a lot of people, and all other options are dropping like flies.

hypnicjerk@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 338d (3 replies)

paying for digital manga is an absolute fucking scam.

it's a shame that so many great series will never license physical copies in english.

From services like Manga UP, totally.

But I think Manga Plus, which is a flat subscription fee, is fine. Buying volumes on e-book stores like Bookwalker, Kobo or Kindle completely fine too (Kobo is the nicest IMO).

hypnicjerk@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 337d (1 reply)

paying for media that i don't own in any sense is a complete non starter for me so we'll have to disagree about the value of subscriptions.

and when ebooks barely cost less than physical volumes without any of the utility, that's absolutely scammy.

That's fair, but calling it a scam is a bit much in that case imo.

Not sure how it is for you, but most of the e-books are at least half the price of the physical volumes where I live. The only exception is the publisher Seven Seas, which is more 3/4 of the price. For example, Demon Slayer is 12 euros physical, but 6 euros digital.

And e-books definitely have utility, like no need for storage space. They're also easier for travel, since it all fits on one device.

Unboxious@ani.social · 4 pts · 338d

At least we can read stuff for free on the manga plus app, but pretty much anything that isn't on that app is going to be expensive like you said. And what if I don't want to read on mobile?

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 14 pts · 338d

While I don't want to speculate, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the same thing that happened to MangaDex.

AntiBullyRanger@ani.social · 14 pts · 338d (2 replies)

0 days since Discord users fucking the scene up

SnoringEarthworm@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 329d (1 reply)

Why are we blaming discord users here?

themachinestops@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 13 pts · 338d

Comick 2 incoming.

Th3D3k0y@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 338d (1 reply)

For the longest time I keep trying to find a variety of sources to get comics in case this happened. but Comick always had the most issues. So I kept getting my issues from them, and now it happened

mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 337d

My only issue with Comick is that they'd have a lot of duplicate chapters

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 10 pts · 338d (1 reply)

@wjs018@ani.social I pinned this since it's quite important.

wjs018@ani.social · 7 pts · 338d

Thanks! I am primarily working in a lab today and haven't really been able to stay plugged in.

caseyweederman@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 338d

Oh. I guess this isn't a "wait it out" situation then.

braindamagebuddy@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 338d

GG, can't have anything nice around these places.

yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 338d

I just started using it a week ago 🥲

Winter_Oven@piefed.social · 5 pts · 338d

Oh... I...had quite a few comics... Hm...

fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 338d (7 replies)

What other good options are there?

Keegen@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 338d (6 replies)

I like weebcentral because they have RSS support, makes it very convenient to keep up with updates without needing to make yet another account on yet another site.

Here's hoping it won't become too popular or the axe might come for it next.

fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 338d

Someone needs to make an archival torrent of as much manga as possible

DarkSirrush@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 338d (4 replies)

Note that weebcentral has already rebranded more than once, so I personally can't trust it as a stable source anymore

Keegen@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 338d (3 replies)

Fair point, but honestly so long as there is a website I don't really care that much what it is. I use AniList to track my actual reading progress so switching from one source to another is not a big deal. If the port goes down, we sail to a different one - such be the life of a pirrrrate.

DarkSirrush@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 338d (2 replies)

That's fair, I am just salty about now having to migrate 120 series off of comick... And I haven't even finished migrating off of weebcentral like I meant to ages ago

Keegen@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 338d (1 reply)

Damn, that's a lot of series! I can see how with that amount things could get annoying.

DarkSirrush@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 338d

Yeah, been putting off setting up something like a suwayomi server for ages, but if it can do mass migrations I might just have to this time

CaptainBasculin@lemmy.bascul.in · 3 pts · 338d

speckledlemon@urusai.social · 3 pts · 338d (7 replies)

If you don’t use an app to read, it’s probably easier to switch to Kenmei.

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 7 pts · 338d (3 replies)

As far as I know, Kenmei is just a tracker?

speckledlemon@urusai.social · 5 pts · 338d (1 reply)

It tracks progress but directly links to hosts, so you can read with it too, that’s actually the main feature.

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 1 pts · 338d

Not my use case, sadly. I'll need to finally decide myself and spin up Suwayomi. Even if the original source is down, I'll still have the downloaded chapters.

caseyweederman@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 338d (2 replies)

Does anyone have recommendations for those of us using apps?

spiffpitt@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 338d (1 reply)

like Mihon?

caseyweederman@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 337d

Yokai. Comick was the best source I'd found through Yokai. By a long shot.

Could you share an invite to the discord? I'd get it from their page but...

Grazie

AntiBullyRanger@ani.social · 2 pts · 338d

this is, incredible.

You legit expect us to oust ourselves?

clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 338d (1 reply)

Well dang. I guess there's no way to export reading history or follows?

Never mind I read the rest of the post.

AntiBullyRanger@ani.social · 1 pts · 338d

wut

Gladaed@feddit.org · 1 pts · 338d (1 reply)

Was that a comic piracy website?

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 7 pts · 338d

Aggregator, but yes in the end.

clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 337d (2 replies)

Can anyone recommend a tool for tracking which comics I'm reading, but which doesn't host copyrighted material itself? I could host it myself if necessary.

I don't want to lose my progress and reading history when the next site shuts down.

Ideally the tracker could link to some sources but that's optional.

PrincessKadath@ani.social · 6 pts · 337d (1 reply)

Tracking in itself is not illegal, think of TVDB, AniList, and MAL. Someone suggested using Kenmei, apparently you can also put where you read each manga.

clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 337d

I've never used any of those, thank you for the tips!
