Some guy I've never spoken to sent me a message threatening that he would never speak to me again and that he would excommunicate me from his dull and unpopular subreddit.

That is just bonkers.If you don't like it, you don't like it, but that's not someone else's problem. I had a young female co-worker for a while. Who came from a large female dominated family. Starting stories with girl this or girl that. I wasn't a girl, it didn't hurt my feelings. I always enjoyed talking with her.
Hell I'm from Missouri, where people have been known to use the word dude like they were smurfs.

Isnt that exactly the point? It is an unpopular small community because it has a unique behaviour/conduct culture.
Just like Beehaw has a different culture from .world or .ml, this specific community has a unique culture and doesn't fit well with mainstream lemmy. That's atompoet's thing, if he wants it that way it is his community.

There was some reddit drama blow up a year or two ago where admins were banning if you upvoted people that used a banned word or phrase. I don't reddit anymore but I saw some posts here about it.
