I really like the night trains in Europe. It’s the only way I travel (far) nowadays. Hope this is not a trend

Where can I find schedules, conections and book tickets? Whatever I found seemed fishy, outdated or incomplete.

ÖBB has their regular booking page but I think there’s a separate Nightjet page too. Otherwise I just try to book as much as possible with Deutsche Bahn even though I don’t live in Germany

Tried it once and it was horribly uncomfortable

I've travelled a couple times, Budapest Munich, Munich Budapest, Zagreb Split, Split Zagreb, Zagreb Budapest, Berlin Hamburg, Budapest Cluj. It really depends on the train operator and the wagon you get. Which you often won't know until you actually board the train. Unless it specifically states that it's an overnight train with berths.

I've travelled on one that had six person cabins but the seat couldn't even be pulled out and leaned back. But was fortunate enough to snag one once where my gf and I had completely randomly been assigned to a three-bunk cabin with no one else boarding for the whole trip and the ability to lock the door/pull curtains. 😏

On Prague-Budapest I got a berth but it was too short to lie on, and there was an annoying piece of metal at the end of it. They also simply parked the train for 4 hours, right under some very bright lights

Well, it definitely takes some getting used to but I think I’m slowly getting there

that's just outrageous.. can we start taxing plane's kerosene and lift the taxes on train electricity so it's a viable option?

Noooo dont cut night trains. I love travelling while sleeping and arriving in the morning.

they took the midnight train going no-where

kossa@feddit.org · 10 pts · 331d

Problem was IMHO that it wasn't a midnight train at all. I just wanted to book it recently. Left Paris at 7pm, arrived in Frankfurt at 3am. Like, I could not have dinner in Paris that evening and am stranded in the middle of the night.

They had (a long time ago) a perfect night train service Frankfurt-Paris, which was always full when I took it. I just think that adjusting times for Frankfurt instead of Vienna and Berlin would have made more sense, as Frankfurt is comparably well connected and central. So you could arrive in Frankfurt at a normal time and be in any other major city early afternoon.

Huh. I'm sitting on the one from Zürich to Berlin right now. I've been using these for years now, whenever I travel in Europe. Generally prefer then over flying for a lot of reasons.

Shutting down lines definitely feels like a step in the wrong direction.
