if you post a thread about intolerable dickheads, the most intolerable dickheads on Lemmy will post some shit like “intolerable dickhead checking in, how fucking dare you”
it’s like catnip for the Reddit-brained, and by catnip I mean meth
thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 299d
I haven't met that many dickheads here though, maybe one or two, but not as many as reddit.
Unless I'm the asshole.
mawhrin@awful.systems · 14 pts · 299d
they tend to disappear from here rather quickly
blakestacey@awful.systems · 12 pts · 298d
Sometimes they file reports against regulars, accusing them of "ableism" for being anti-slop-machine. That's also entertaining.

Some people will go as far as to call you racist and genocidal if you express dislike for slop machines

There's a term for being anti-ai slop? Hahahaha that is hilarious!
Edit. That term is against those with disabilities. I agree that that's a dick move. Are they claiming that by hating ai slop, we are against those with disabilities? I'm feeling like I missed something. They can't mean that, that's idiotic. Like... Idiocracy level.
dgerard@awful.systems · 5 pts · 297d
AI SHILL: if you hate AI, you hate the disabled!
DISABLED PERSON: hi, help me in some practical way
AI SHILL: fuck off

Interesting. Why would more manipulative people and ones with more focus on self-interest use AI more than other people? Because they're more likely to take shortcuts while doing stuff? Or is there any other direct benefit for them?
owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca · 58 pts · 299d
I imagine there are a few reasons. An LLM is a narcissist's dream--it will remain focused on you and tell you what you want to hear (and is always willing to be corrected).
In addition, LLMs are easy to manipulate, and sort of mimic a person enough to give you a sense of power or authority. So if you're the type of person who gets something from that, there's likely a draw to that kind of person.
Those are just guesses, though. I don't use LLMs myself, so I don't really know.
hendrik@palaver.p3x.de · 11 pts · 299d
Thanks, that sounds reasonable. Especially the focus/attention.
Maybe it's the same as with other games or computer games... Some people also really get something out of fantasy achievements and when they win and feel like the main character... in a weird way...

As a certified bullshitter myself, I often find myself really annoyed with llms because their bullshitting is just so obvious
thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 299d
I would think because ai is basically just a yes man they can get instant gratification from. Easier to manipulate than a real human, when they're wrong, you can berate them without year of pushback.

For example: https://youtu.be/qhwbUL2mJMs
V0ldek@awful.systems · 18 pts · 299d
My completely PIDOOMA take is that if you're self-interested and manipulative you're already treating most if not all people as lesser, less savvy, less smart than you. So just the fact that you can half-ass shit with a bot and declare yourself an expert in everything that doesn't need such things like "collaboration with other people", ew, is like a shot of cocaine into your eyeball.
LLMs' tone is also very bootlicking, so if you're already narcissistic and you get a tool that tells you yes, you are just the smartest boi, well... To quote a classic, it must be like being repeatedly kicked in the head by a horse.

The only thing that drives me to AI is the extreme uselessness of modern search engines. This is not an endorsement of hallucination engines as much as it is a condemnation of late stage enshittification of search engines and the internet in general. I miss the days when I could google something and actually find what I was looking for.
chuckleslord@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 299d
... the search engines became crap because of ai
Plus, ai just lies. It's not a replacement
__Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 14 pts · 299d
Shitty search has been a problem longer than ai
chuckleslord@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 299d
If your definition of ai is only LLMs, sure. But it's been algorithmic tweaking and SEO wars for a while now.
__Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 299d
Well yeah, llm garbage is the problem being discussed. Do you consider SEO to be ai? I don't see why you would.
chuckleslord@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 299d
No, but the algorithms that search engines use to combat it is.
Revan343@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 298d

fuzzzerd@programming.dev · 2 pts · 299d
Both right? Ai has been around longer than LLMs but search enshitification has little to do with LLMs or ML, it's SEO all the way down and has little to do with AI of any kind.
atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 298d
AI has been around since the 50s, Internet search has only been around since the 80s.
__Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 298d
That is irrelevant. We are specifically talking about LLMs ruining Google searches, which is the last couple of years.
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 298d
I mean, search has always been built on some kind of LLM. That's how you convert a query into a list of page-results.
We've just started trying to wrap the outputs into a natural language response pattern in order to make them feel more definitive and more engaging. The "AI" part of search is mostly window-dressing.
It has inaccurate heuristics and often tries to back-fill what it can't find with an approximation in order to maintain user engagement.
Idk if I'd even call it lying, so much as bullshitting.
self@awful.systems · 6 pts · 297d
no it fucking hasn’t. the stemming and page ranking algorithms used in traditional search have absolutely nothing to do with LLMs.
shit, neither stemming nor PageRank as originally defined even have a machine learning component. here’s postgres’ full text search suite, which literally converts a textual query into a list of results (sans page ranking, which is out of scope for a database) in a manner suitable for a production search engine, utterly without any machine learning or other stochastic crap.

Dagamant@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 299d
I love technology and seeing what I can and can’t get to work. I have a self hosted image generator and LLM (stable diffusion and ollama). It was fun for a little while, generating images of whatever popped in mind and using the llama for code completion, grammar checks, and rewording things. I even started working on something like that AI streamer, Neuro. It’s all garbage though. The whole stack has been relegated to sending welcome messages on a discord server. It’s a neat toy but anything past that is just adding a whole layer of inaccuracy to whatever you’re using it for and way too many people don’t realize that.
Wronnay@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 298d
Until this article I wasn’t sure how big the AI bubble is…
But seeing that more than 99% of the public don’t really use AI and then comparing that to tech stocks makes me sure the bubble is just like in the 2000s
Of course some stuff will stick just like in the 2000s but with these high valuations and 99% of people not using it, it will take a long time till break-even

Wow. The anti-AI crowd says AI use decreases critical thinking, but this article provides strong evidence that we don't need any help in that arena.
For real, the study, the article, and every comment I have seen in this thread so far seem to have failed to apply even some basic critical thinking to this topic.
From the article:
Yeah, the whole fucking study consisted of an online personality quiz, and then asking people to download and submit their desktop Chrome browsing history. The most glaring problem here is that MOST PEOPLE USE AI ON APPS ON THEIR PHONES. Seriously, this whole study is flawed to the bones because the researches chose expediency over actually gathering meaningful data.
And beyond that, Chrome doesnt cache browsing history in Incognito mode, which is likely where a lot of AI use is happening.
And a further huge methodological limitation: people tend not to self-report on things they are ashamed of. If someone really has Machiavellian traits, they will be wary of disclosing this on a survey where they don't know who will have access to that information. They will either hide their nature, or simply drop out of the study. Same goes for people with large amounts of AI use openly visible in their browsing history - they will likely either drop out of the study or delete shameful instances of AI use from their browsing history. So what they are really measuring on their long tale is likely confounded with a simple measure of how truthful/shameless people are. If someone reads a personality quiz and says "yeah, I do sometimes manipulate people - like a couple days ago I told Jerry I'd buy him a beer if he gave me a ride to the airport, but I still haven't done that..." then they are also likely the type of person who would say "well, I'm not a huge fan of these researchers knowing how much I use AI chatbots to jerk off, but I want to legitimately contribute to science."
And yet the researcher, this blogger, and everyone here simply ignore these gigantic problems with the study so they can toot their trumpets to the anti-AI tune. And for the record, I'm not some pro-AI evangelist. I think it's an interesting tool. I think it has future potential to improve/destroy the world. And I think that currently it has some pretty big limitations. However, I am pro-science, and this is straight up not science. It is pure, unfiltered dumbfuckery.

The sleight of hand in the industry, wherein businesses that used to provide users with search results to explicit queries and now repackage their search tool as "AI" with a more natural language interface, has produced a group of people who are outspokenly insisting AI is a success because users still need the web to search for data.
No idea why you would presume the bulk of AI use was happening Incognito. This seems like you're trying to argue in the negative - "you can't prove they're not using AI in secret and loving it".
Seems like they're collecting some basic popularity metrics and finding the results that are consistent with their audience's own experiences. The tools are clumsy, inaccurate, cumbersome, and unprofitable for both the host and the end user. LLMs aren't ready for prime time, no matter how many ways a business tries to shoehorn an AI interface into their application model.
Hypothesis, data collection, analysis, results.
That's textbook scientific analysis.
blarghly@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 298d
What are you talking about? Most web traffic these days is mobile traffic. The most common way people use AI (other than in search summaries, which the study doesn't seem to have counted) is by whipping out the chatgpt app on their phone. If you want to know "what tree is that?" or "what is the name of Elrond's hair stylist?" you aren't going to run back to your laptop to query chatgpt on Chrome.
Other common uses of AI are for coding (independent applications) or chat bots (independent applications)
Porn
Sure, go collect data. But point out that you shouldn't draw conclusions from the data since ut is woefully incomplete.
It's garbage scientific analysis. This crap shouldnt make it past peer review. It's worse than p-hacking and the replication crisis since it isn't even hard to find the flaws in their methodology. This is "science" for the sake of getting published - it is disingenuous and actively sets back the public's faith in science.
surph_ninja@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 298d
People will upvote anything anti-AI. You’re right, it’s very ironic that they apply zero critical thinking to evaluate any of it.
They also really hate when you point out all of the anti-AI articles using outdated data, because all of the data from this year shows massive gains in efficiency and model slimming.
