Or because for a certain subset of the population "fuck everyone but me" is a factory default setting. It does seem somewhat unnatural that humans could both make it this far and be this shitty to each other but it seems to be a constant in the spectrum of human attitudes.

Conservatism is built upon the idea that people are unequal because some people wanted to uphold the powers of royalty, and thus different rules must apply to them, and rights must come from top-down, not bottom-up.
