All I know is that a simple 4-way stop, with multiple lanes in all directions, has an effort:chaos ratio that is off the charts. No need for multi-million-dollar engineering projects.
Reminds me how whenever someone makes a realistic Australian city in cities skylines, everyone in the comments roasts them for adding stop signs/signals on highway ramps, which are extremely dangerous and inefficient.
They really do have stop signs/signals on highway ramps in Australia 😭
Wait until they find out about speed bumps, stop lights and cross walks across highways in Brazil.
Yes that's real, you go from 100kph to 25kph with speed bumps and speed cameras that will absolutely ticket your ass if you're 1kph over the limit. BR-101 in Paraíba goes through many small towns that do this, it's great for pedestrians since the highway cuts directly though the heart of these towns but terrifying if drivers don't pay attention. Also these speed bumps aren't always clearly marked so rip your suspension at night
You're lucky. They're well-intended, but really awful. You're supposed to traverse the intersection in the order you arrive. All it takes is for one jackass to waive* their right of way, or run the intersection, and the other three drivers are thrown into disarray. Add multiple lanes to this and, well... good luck everyone!
* Often literally waving at you to go. Through the intersection. At the wrong time.

I feel your pain so deeply on this point. This part is universal, people trying to be "nice" don't understand that rules exist to make things run smoothly.
My poor soul requires rules be followed, and changed when they no longer make sense.
My deepest condolences that you have a road design that compounds this further.
I bet 4-way stops are a joy for pedestrians also haha
Cars are merging there in 6 distinct points. They may need to merge up to 5 times to leave the collider. It's anything but efficient. Also, not every street can be reached from every street.
A roundabout is orders of magnitude better than this.

I wonder how long you could drive on this before anyone realised you were just going around in circles?
MacNCheezus@lemmy.today · 14 pts · 296d
It’s just five exits, why on earth was a regular roundabout not good enough?
BanMe@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 296d
Handles like 25x as much traffic
MacNCheezus@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 296d
But at what price?
anomnom@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 295d
Slightly more land use I guess. It’s a lot better than having idling cars stacking up in your neighborhood though I bet.

Weirdly easy to navigate in person. You just go where you want to go.

Stop signs on a highway are a great way of killing people.

Sorry I placed that oddly, I meant the constant crosswalks are great, not the highways.

4-way stops are an American abomination. One street really ought to have right of way, otherwise it would be a small roundabout.
I can happily say I have never been exposed to a 4-way stop in Australia.

I never noticed, if you make the rotary supercollider with two way streets, it works!
And009@lemmynsfw.com · 1 pts · 295d
Cars shouldn't merge in an interchange.. It's as effective as the roundabout.
marcos@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 295d
I didn't say it's efficient.
