Trump administration faces Monday deadline on use of contingency funds for SNAP

Donald Trump's administration faces deadlines on Monday to tell two federal judges whether it will comply with court orders that it continue to fund SNAP, the nation's biggest food aid program, using contingency funds during the government shutdown.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture planned to freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program starting Nov. 1 because it said it could no longer keep funding it due to the shutdown. The program serves about 1 in 8 Americans and is a major piece of the nation's social safety net — and it costs about $8 billion per month nationally.

The situation leaves millions with uncertainty about how they will feed themselves. Benefits will be delayed in November regardless of the outcome of the court cases because many beneficiaries have their cards recharged early in the month and the process of loading cards can take a week or more in many states.

Cutting SNAP is like torching a homeless guy s tent

There are actual humans who are competent enough to read and understand the words in your comment, and then think that it describes two positive scenarios

Punching down is what these banana-heads do best.

Tens of millions of unhoused peoples’ tents

And disabled peoples’ tents

And children’s tents

And pregnant women’s tents

And the tents of countless elderly persons…

They would happily do that too

for real. Like, don't start giving them ideas. Newsome already exists.

Well he already said today they he won't fund it no matter what court said.

Ceruleum@lemmy.wtf · 2 pts · 286d

Easy, since nobody dares to enforce the law on him.

blave@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 290d (1 reply)

Or what? They’ll write a strongly worded letter?

Ceruleum@lemmy.wtf · 1 pts · 286d

Too much effort.

There's no reprocussions for these assholes so why even bother??? They are going to say no you can't make me, then throw another Gatsby party to thumb their nose at the people their stealing from. Fuck!

Remember a few years ago when news of mass mobs stealing from stores was going around (and even some retailers citing it as the reason for store closures and layoffs?) Soon that shit might actually be real this time.

This is what happens when both sides fail to make living wages, eating, and healthcare rights that all have from birth period

Is it?

The Republicans are already ignoring people's rights.

SNAP is an existing system with an emergency fund for exactly this scenario and they're just refusing to fund it.

I think the point they are trying to make is that welfare wouldn't be needed nearly as much if people were taken care of in other places. Right now you could be working full time and still be on foodstamps, living out of a car because wages are bullshit, and everything is expensive as fuck.

Fair point
