I used to be the #1 CounterStrike player back in the 0.7 days (when it was just a great mod for Half-Life and ranking was tracked via a 3rd party website that I can't remember). It only lasted like two months but it was such a fun time in my life... I used to travel around New England crushing everyone at LAN parties.
That was a long time ago.
Now I'm the #1 Beat Saber player at the ripe old age of 47! Don't believe me?
I also have a... special skill that only about 3-4 other Beat Saber players have (in the whole world!). You can see it demonstrated in this masterpiece of a replay:

Are you doing it with your back turned to the screen?
That was a while ago, but at some point I was "quite good" on my main champion (Leona) on League of Legends. I would usually be able to make a few plays per game, and sometimes win a few team fights.
Obviously, I was probably mostly playing with other very low level players, but it was still nice.
It was on MK Wii back in 2016. Faced off against 2 Japanese players and managed to beat them only by one point in battle mode. Was the highlight of my life basically. Never been the same since.
I recently got into Masters with Cammy in Street Fighter 6. It made me think I was pretty good until I started playing other Masters players, and then I realized I am trash at this game LOL
I was hoping for a Vulkan (first party) remaster of Q3a at quakecon this year. There was a sort if tease about this just prior. Maybe it's not ready yet.
No blocking, just dodging. Was hell, tbh I couldn't beat the true ending boss, literally 0 openings without parrying. But did beat the normal final boss.
Silksong, end of act I boss. I watched footage of that boss several times to learn their moves until the whole fight was so legible that it ended before I even got "in the zone". It forced me to pay more close attention to enemy animations and sounds, and it made me a better player. I'm still a bit of a scrub, but I've developed a better eye for my own shortcomings and how to deal with those.
Twitch guess shots that hit, through tree-cover guess shots that are on, and being slippery during flagruns to confuse opponents(or use up their mousepad space) before tagging them.
[ Did you like UT or Q3 back in the day? Then give it a go, an excellent FOSS FPS]
I was getting pretty decent at Deadlock last year. Not enough to mix with the top ranked players but enough to be in the rightward slope of the bell curve. When I was playing with friends or acquaintances I'd made in the game I'd consistently be one of the top performers of the team, and I would regularly carry games both with performance but also shot calling over mic.
Unfortunately the hyperfixation abated and I haven't touched the game since like January.
I was ranked 33rd in the world on a drifting course in a gran turismo game a number of years ago, and I did it in a stock car. All the other top scores were set by people tuning the ever loving crap out of them.
Dungeons of Eternity, with friends, I only use bows because they actually require skill. (I dont recommend the game, however.)
I've been in VR for 7 years. Many archery games have honed my skill. Being able to use that skill in this game puts me above the average player.
I can fire arrows fast and accurate. I dont tire out too fast. I hold my own In a team where one uses a greatsword and the other often uses a gravity staff.
I currently use bows with Ice Damage + Slowing. Ice is OP and frozen enemies die in 1 hit. Slowing is effective on Ice elementals, as well as slowing enemies until I get an ice arrow.
The ultimate bow in the game, for my play style, would probably be Ice + Slowing + Elite Damage + Elemental Damage.
But I dont recommend the game because every dungeon run is the same. Same enemies, same rooms, same game loop. Also, the way you get items is stupid. You "unlock" them by opening chests, then you have to "craft" them at the lobby, which costs in-game money for some reason. You also cant trade weapons with friends.
Furthermore, only 1 potion effect can be active at a time (we've lost runs because we were invisible and stepped in another potion). This goes for enemies as well. If I freeze an enemy, then hit them with a Slowing arrow, they become unfrozen and slowed. And thats another thing:
When a weapon claims to have 2 elements, its not 2 elements on the same arrow, no, it randomly applies one of the elements to SOME of the arrows. So I pull an arrow, 50% of th e time its a normal arrow. The other 50% it could be 1 of those 2 elements, you never know.
The game infuriates me by their design choices. Im only playing because we dont have multiplayer VR Skyrim yet, or something like it, like Blade&Sorcery. Im only playing because thats what my friends are playing.
I'm no top top player, but I've got solid tournament placings in many of the games that I play. At Combo Breaker this year I finished 5th in Them's Fightin' Herds, 17th in Mystery Bracket, and made it out of pools in Under Night In-Birth. At a smaller local last month I won Vampire Savior and took 2nd in Skullgirls.
Also play a lot of online and offline mahjong, I'm Master 1 on Mahjong Soul and 8th Dan on Riichi City. Actually on my way out the door for the Philadelphia Riichi Open this weekend.
Used to be a big name in Puyo Puyo, at my peak PPC's regional leaderboards had me at #1 in my state (but to be fair, this is because the west is so far behind, I'm still nothing compared to Japan). Retired now because I hate what Sega has done to the game, but that's a rant for another day.
Depends how skilled 'skilled' is. If you mean 'hey I'm pretty good' I'd say a week or so, did some cool shit in Runescape.
If skilled means 'i am god and you will kneel' that's gonna be a few months, played some cs against trash players and I was just a walking death machine for a while.
Maybe a few years ago, my nephews wanted to play a bunch of fighting games with me.
We started with Mortal Kombat, which is a game I've never really played. That hour went about as well as you'd expect. But at least they were having fun.
Then we switched to Tekken, again, game I've never played. Another 40 minutes or so of losing.
Then we switched to Street Fighter Alpha. Now this, this is a game I know. I played back in the arcade at college, at a time when a quarter was meaningful to me. So I got very good at defending my quarter. I don't think I let my nephews win a single round.
Absolutely wrecking my younger brother in One Must Fall 2097 back in the early aughts.
We also used to play Need For Speed High Stakes and would challenge each other to beat our best track times. I routinely trounced him in the McLaren F1 GTR while he was a shill for the Mercedes CLK GTR.
For Single Player:
Mission 11 in Project Wingman. The huge dogfight and that soundtrack just clicked in me.
Probably Monster Hunter: World. It's a game I've played on and off again through the years. Late/End game Iceborne gets pretty rough, and I usually hit a plateu in skill and just can't git guud enough. Last time I played, I far and away blew past my prior plateaus while also learning the intricacies of Charge Blade and just having an absolute blast with it.
One day, I will get Wilds, and then I will be dead to the world for weeks.
Not me, but close family members used to play Super Smash Bros a lot. They then went to uni and nobody in the entire student housing could beat them. I was pretty decent at Mario Kart 64 finishing every track #1 in the highest difficulty. But recently I tried it and sucked hard as I hadn't held a controller in more than a decade. Of course my curiosity had to be satiated and I tried the new Mario Kart on whatever console it was released on (Switch II?) - sucked even harder than on the N64.
My glory days of console gaming are long gone. It's all casual gaming nowadays on my HD toaster.
Years ago, I could, pretty consistently, beat Terraria in about seven hours. I did use TmodLoader, with a couple of QoL mods, but I did feel like a god beating every boss so quickly.

I've never paused. Not once!
I also have a... special skill that only about 3-4 other Beat Saber players have (in the whole world!). You can see it demonstrated in this masterpiece of a replay:
https://replay.beatleader.com/?scoreId=20010657
...but here's my highest-PP play:
https://replay.beatleader.com/?scoreId=17128036
Second highest is a bit more impressive though, IMHO:
https://replay.beatleader.com/?scoreId=27221909
(Take into account that I never pause while watching that)

I am not an owl.

The replay must be faulty then because it shows the VR headset facing the other way multiple times.
riskable@programming.dev · 1 pts · 304d
The headset stays on my face. In order for it to be facing my back, my neck would have to turn 180° (like an owl).

Just finished Silksong act 3. At nearly 50 years old I felt pretty badasses for being able to complete it without cheating or mods.
FooBarrington@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 307d
Congrats, that's a huge achievement! Silksong is amazing, but hard enough that a good number of players won't be able to finish Act 3.
