Does anyone know which book this is based on?

edit = silly me. Dune Messiah. as per the interwebs

And that will likely be where they end the movies as the books start becoming weirder.

I seem to recall Denis making it clear this is where he intends to stop, for exactly this reason.

goddamnit, I wanted to see

::: spoiler spoiler Leto 2 becoming the sandworm god :::

but I guess with some of the disappointing scenes in the 2nd film (Paul taming Shai Hulud, the visions just being shots on a beach) , it probably wasn't going to go down the way I wanted to. It's a shame.

Soundtrack was still awesome, but it did re-use a LOT from the previous film

Sardaukar chant FTW.

Did you see the Syfy series?

MalikMuaddibSoong@startrek.website · 4 pts · 282d

At least the syfy miniseries dared to adapt Children of Dune.

I actually like it. We finally get an Irulan with agency and see Alia as a full character. And Leto 2 getting sandy.

Not sure how I feel about the Baron narrating in rhyming couplets though. Maybe just a tad too strange, even for Dune.

It wasn't bad. It is better than Lynch's film. It's not as good as the Villenuve's.

If it means anything I read all the books

Where does Jodo's work rank in your estimation?

QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 281d

He never finished it but Im not a fan of that guy. Self admitted rapists shouldn't be celebrated.

Fermion@mander.xyz · 4 pts · 282d (7 replies)

The American mind can't comprehend the glory of Leto III.

QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 282d (5 replies)

An American wrote the whole series. What we cannot do is make the 4th book interesting on film

chuckleslord@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 282d (4 replies)

But why not? Who doesn't love a giant worn talking around the fact that he's created a fascist dictatorship for some vague promise that'll it all pay off one day? /s

QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 282d (3 replies)

It's 500 pages of exposition and little story?

chuckleslord@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 282d (2 replies)

Oh! Did you not know and were speculating? The movies will only cover the first two books. The third book is when stuff starts to get... odd.

But the fourth book is mostly talking with an action set piece at the beginning and the end. I didn't read the next book

QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 282d

No Im in my 50s and Im spacing whether it's the fourth or fifth book that is mostly Leto engaging in exposition.

If ypu missed the last book you missed "Jews in Space" before Mel Brooks thought of it.

IronBird@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 281d

we didnt even get the creche-wide spice orgy for dune 2

lame

ohlaph@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 282d

I couldn't help but read that in Danny Devito's voice. Haha

HubertManne@piefed.social · 2 pts · 282d

I was wondering this. I mean I sorta would like to see the flash crossover part.

keyez@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 281d (2 replies)

It's been like 6 years since I've read the books and I really didn't enjoy Dune Messiah but I also think parts of Children of Dune will be included. If you browse IMDB they have casted the son and daughter.

tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 281d (1 reply)

I like the first one so much that I read it multiple times as a kid, but then I read the second one and decided that was as far in the series as I needed to go.

snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 281d

Yeah, I recently (started in like June or so) listened to the core books and I'm maybe 1 hour off finishing book 6. Honestly 4 was enough of an ending and it just goes even further off the rails.

scytale@piefed.zip · 9 pts · 282d (1 reply)

The two things I’m looking forward to (if they bother showing them) are how they depict the Guild Navigators and Tleilaxu. The latter was kinda teased in the Dune: Prophecy series but that was a lower budget production, so I wonder if they will do it differently.

undeffeined@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 282d

Also want to see the navigators and the tleilaxu. Dune prophecy was a big let down for me. Also very curious to see the Stone Burner on the big screen.

IWW4@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 283d

I guess I need to see part 2.

wersooth@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 275d

the most anticlimactic ending, with "goodbye grandfather" was a mess. the entire second movie felt like they totally totally ran out of mojo and everyone's just watching the time when they can throw everything and go home. the old syfy 3 part webseries was way better representation of the story.... but, we all.know, hollywood and quality in the same sentence feels forced for many years now

after that disaster of part2? why???

djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 11 pts · 282d (1 reply)

I think the only parts I'd really categorize as a disaster kinda need a third movie to explain. I really don't like how Denis changed Paul and Chani's relationship, but maybe it'll get paid off in a satisfying way in part three.

Or it'll just continue being extremely out of character teen angst for contrived plot reasons, idk

undeffeined@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 282d

Yeah, book Chani was much more of her own person, with confidence and purpose.

iSeth@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 282d

"Because it's profitable", is my guess. I thought it was a good adaptation, what did you find so disastrous?
