You don't need to understand. Vegemite is mass produced, and has been mass produced for decades upon decades. If people weren't buying it, they wouldn't be selling it. Therefore there are plenty of people who like it
I am a person who willingly eats Vegemite, so is my family, most of my friends, co-workers, acquaintances, the literal hundreds of children I've cared for in my line of work for the most part all eat vegemite.
More than 22 million jars of the stuff is produced annually, which points to the fact that a whole lot of people must be willingly eating it.
You're not the main character. Your opinions are not the most important or the most correct.
Disregarding the case where you are a Marmite supremacist I'll say why.
Vegemite and marmite can be thought of as a bitter spice to put on top of butter toast. Just like with salt you can put nothing, way too much and the just right amount. The just right amount is way more subjective than tomatoes or cheese on breat since it can vary by a factor of 20-50x.
I have converted some people to eating marmite and I do it by putting 2-3mm of a knifes tip on the toast and spreading it as thin as possible.
A visiting American friend thought the Marmite was a jar of Chocolate spread.
We all watched her spread a hefty knife full onto a piece of bread.
“She must really like Marmite” we thought.
I will never forget her reaction when she bit into it.

Just because you don't like something doesn't mean others don't.

I like just about any food, but I can't see how people can stand Vegemite.
