Basically bye bye battery (models RP-1304 and HL-RP-S1304), no refunds:

CPSC urges consumers to immediately remove the battery from the e-bike and dispose of the battery following local hazardous waste disposal procedures. Do not sell or give away these hazardous batteries.

Rad Power Bikes' statement:

Rad’s Safe Shield batteries and semi-integrated batteries are not subject to the agency’s statement. Rad had the batteries re-tested by third-party labs as part of this investigation; the batteries passed these tests again. Nonetheless, in an effort to partner with the CPSC, Rad proposed multiple solutions to the agency in good faith. Rad informed the agency that its demand to replace all batteries, regardless of condition, would immediately put Rad out of business, which would be of no benefit to our riders. Rad is disappointed that it could not reach a resolution that best serves our riders and the industry at large. Rad reminds its customers to inspect batteries before use or charging and immediately stop using batteries that show signs of damage, water ingress, or corrosion, and to contact Rad so we can support our riders.

Because they sold faulty, dangerous products to people for money, and should compensate them for that.

If that cost shutters their bad company, than so be it.

I'm pretty sure not all the Rad Power batteries are problematic, e.g. 1. they post in that article the part number of the problematic ones. and 2. I know at least 2 people who have RP's and those bikes haven't exploded into flames, at least not yet.

And? Rad bikes is saying replacing just the bad batteries they sold that have caused fires will drive their company into bankruptcy. If doing the bare minimuim causes your company to fail, then so be it.

Rad reminds its customers to inspect batteries before use or charging and immediately stop using batteries that show signs of damage, water ingress, or corrosion, and to contact Rad so we can support our riders.

RAD basically ask customer to disassemble the casing, peel open the shrink wrap and inspect the battery themselves, and then expect the customer to reseal the battery if in good condition, which will void any warranty available and escape further responsibility. And if the battery is found having those issue, RAD will only then *"support" their customer.

*support by asking them to buy another one probably.

This will be the final nail in the coffin for Rad. Especially since they're likely going to be sued since they aren't offering refunds at all (even though they claimed they would offer discounts. where are the discounts if they were willing, why did they go away once the CPSC said it wouldn't be acceptable??)

It's sad, really. PE strikes again. I was about to start riding my Rad again after I broke my leg a few years ago. My battery isn't on the affected list, but I don't really trust Rad after this. I'll probably dispose of the battery and sell the bike with no battery.

Affected bikes:

RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, RadRover High Step 5, RadCity Step Thru 3, RadRover Step Thru 1, RadRunner 2, RadRunner 1, RadRunner Plus, and RadExpand 5. The battery model number (HL-RP-S1304 or RP-1304) is printed on a label on the back or rear of the battery.

Current US government is apparently there to sell fossil fuels and enforce car dependency. As such, making it difficult to offer alternatives seems like a logical step
