Europeans are switching to EVs faster than anywhere else in the world. Only 36% of new car sales are gasoline or diesel cars so far in Europe in 2025.

I bought my first electric car this year and can't imagine going back, although ultimately I hope that public transport becomes a viable option in my area and I won't have to buy another car in general.

And yet, Germany wants to hang on to gasoline. Are they going to pivot to tank production because they use diesel engines?

And it ain't Tesla!

It's good news to see fossil fuel cars in such steep decline. This contrasts with the US, where gas cars are still near 90% of new sales. It's China and Europe who are embracing EVs the fastest, though in China, combustion engine cars are still near 50% of sales.

But it's not all good news. Half of those EVs are hybrid models. Data shows drivers with these still use a significant amount of gas, almost as much as ICE cars. The EU has set a 2035 deadline to ban all new gas car sales, and it seems that will include these polluting hybrid cars, too.

Every major EU market saw a decrease in petrol sales, led by France with a staggering 32.3% decrease and Germany with a 22.5% drop. The numbers make it clear: the era of fossil fuels ruling the new car market is effectively over.

That is the huge news. The share of BEV+PHEV was only 25.6%. There is a huge non-plug in hybrid segment in Europe. That is resulting in massive reductions of gasoline/diesel. But China has a 50%+ share of BEV+PHEV, and so headline might not be right other than October trends.

It's making the streets in the inner city so quiet too. I'm loving it. And I don't feel so bad driving into our apartment complex late at night or early in the morning. No engine noise whatsoever. Not even that angelic whine that some earlier EVs give off.

I’d buy that van if:

• it was smaller
• it was cheaper
• it had more range
• they swapped out that hideous front grille with something that looks better (like the prototypes)

You want EV sales to take off elsewhere? Stop subsidizing gasoline. Most of Europe pays $7.50 a gallon.

But of course, the UK plans to charge EV users a tax of 3 cents per mile to make up for lost fuel taxes, yet no rebates for subsidies to oil and gas companies.

While EV production is still somewhat of a side-thing in europe.

In a place where work and play are within walking or biking distance, a 100 mile battery would be perfect.
