If your contract can be torn up by your employer, and you do not strike immediately, you don't have a union, you had a polite agreement. Why is there a single TSA agent at work today?!

My god, if they stayed home, air traffic would be shut fucking down. And this isn't like Reagan's air traffic controller strike where he fired them all and brought in the military to cover. Where they gonna get 47,000 uniforms overnight?

Not to mention, it's December, it's about to be the busiest travel time of year. This is the PERFECT time to demonstrate that those in power are trying to fuck everyone over without concern for the consequences.

From federalizing the state national guards. TSA agents don't require the years of training that air traffic controllers do. Whether or not he's right, in Trump's mind they're easily replaceable low-skill employees, so I could easily see him firing everyone striking as soon as it was announced.

Good! They should call his bluff if it came to that.

So many of them are likely living paycheck to paycheck. Losing their jobs means losing their livelihood.

and that's the scary part of a strike. the other side is waiting for your individual job to be thrown out. the collective power may give you better odds than gambling on the longevity of a position under threat.

Ugh, it would be a wet dream to see large strike with large and immediate consequences that force the government to realize it's not in charge

It's a crime to strike if you are a federal employee. It's part of the oath you take. You can face legal consequences beyond the private world.

Yes, federal union contracts are being treated like toilet paper right now because the judicial and legislative branches are not doing their jobs. The political class is failing federal government workers. I know, its obvious but its also going to reverberate for generations. Federal unions and CBAs at least gave federal workers some protections, in exchange for giving up the ability to strike.

Sounds like a bad deal, probably time for a new deal.

Have you seen most TSA agents? You're not really dealing with skilled labor who can find work elsewhere easily.

shalafi@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 249d

They still have to be trained. Shit, just working for Lowe's required 20+ hours of online training before I could get rolling. Imagine all the bullshit the federal government requires.

Even after so many worked through the latest shutdown.

Coulda been avoided if they’d just called in sick. No money, no worky.

What's the point of a contact if one side can just declare it void?

Defund and eliminate the TSA. Problem solved.

I feel you - TSA is security theater - but the main story here is the feds arbitrarily dissolving a union contract. This is one of those times where you want to stand with them, even if you find it distasteful; because this is the preliminary step before they go after a group you do care about.

"you thought you was Kobe" moment for those TSA folks who voted for Trump believing he would do anything to help union workers
