Growing up, I always loved going to Grandma's house because it always smelled so good because she was always cooking something. Later in life, I realized it was just a faint onion smell because she put them in everything.
Interesting perspective, and a valid candidate for worst food, for a lot more reasons than the slave trade (although that's a good one).
I remember reading an article about two dentists who studied old European paintings, and they could pinpoint the year that sugar hit the European continent, because suddenly the dental problems in painting subjects dramatically increased. It was clear that the introduction of sugar devastated the mouths of Europeans.
And of course there is sugar's massive contribution to obesity, which is my personal dragon to slay.
I have an old Irish Canadian friend who said that their mother ate a raw onion every night before she went to bed. At it like an apple as a late night snack. The old woman went on to live to a hundred years of age with a completely sharp and aware mind.

Sometimes it's garlic, but yeah, mostly onion.

Unpopular -slash-borderline-psychopatic opinion: there should be onion grilled in butter scented candles on the market.
I would buy it in a heartbeat. I've seen garlic bread candles on Etsy after all!
SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 253d
Really fuckin' tired of eating all these candles

What's the nutritional benefit of candle wax?

Garlic, butter, thyme, rosemary, bay leaves, onions, shallots, and basil.
Any of these in almost any dish make whatever you're cooking smell amazing.

Literally that.

Ininewcrow@piefed.ca · 3 pts · 253d

gigachad@piefed.social · 17 pts · 253d
Onions are just the most superior vegetable, change my mind.

No.

Counter point. Onions are vile and make eating out a constant annoyance for me because they're in everything.
rbos@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 253d
If they were rare, they would be unbelievably expensive. We're so lucky they are cheap.

They are the worst substance to ever be designated food.
AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 253d
That's sugar. No. Really. Sugar straight up caused the slave trade to explode in the 1500s and 1600s. Later, Hitler turned it into Zycklon - B.

You should try replacing it with onions
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 253d
That's racist.
bklyn@piefed.social · 10 pts · 253d
Who cooks just an onion?
ArfArfWoof@feddit.org · 37 pts · 253d
In a lot of recipes I start with just an onion (or onion with diced garlic), then add stuff later.
BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip · 8 pts · 253d
Most of the time I'm sauteing an onion before I even know what I'm gonna make

I personally don't like onions, so it usually olive oil + garlic.
Or bacon, sometimes it's just bacon
Ininewcrow@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 253d
or frying your onion in bacon fat

I hate onions, and you'll never catch me in this scenario.
Garlic, on the other hand...

Thank you! Feels like I'm the only one reading these comments...
Echolynx@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 253d
I dunno, I'm one of the weirdos who hates the smell (and taste) of fried onion. Makes my eyes water and hurt.
ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 253d
Okay, but in oil or butter?
kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 253d
I hate onion. I dont cook it. Can't stand the smell of it. Best case scenario, I use onion powder in something. I still get these comments, so... no.
