Saapas@piefed.zip · 28 pts · 236d (3 replies)

massive_bereavement@fedia.io · 20 pts · 236d (2 replies)

Hahah, sure thing buddy and some washed up reality show star will be the president 🤣

JollyBrancher@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 236d (1 reply)

I mean, if they could've taken care of governing 1/10 as much of their bodies compared to some others... /s Somewhat. *ETA I just enjoy the overall general positivity and goodwill of responses in this section of Lemmy instances

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 235d

I imagine they had way more control over their bodies than an entire state government

CPMSP@midwest.social · 5 pts · 236d (2 replies)

I ain't got time to bleed

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 235d

Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 236d (1 reply)

Also, didn't the guy that played Billy run for governor of Nebraska or something?

state_electrician@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 236d

Kentucky, yeah.

Montagge@lemmy.zip · 30 pts · 236d (4 replies)

Jesse Ventura is a good one. He also tried to start a wrestler union.

MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net · 26 pts · 236d (1 reply)

On a related note, fuck Hulk Hogan.

state_electrician@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 236d

JollyBrancher@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 236d

Odd opportunity for an ethics good vs bad exercise. With a weirdly unique career history to boot.

dumples@midwest.social · 17 pts · 236d

And all governor's before and after Jessie Ventura have also not given it back. It's ours

It's an unusual choice for Virginia to celebrate getting its ass kicked but we all celebrate heritage differently. Minnesota, for instance, remembers success.

When your heritage is hate, be prepared to have it denied.

schalken@kolektiva.social · 9 pts · 236d (3 replies)

@PugJesus As a Minnesotan: fucking right!

niedlichenacktschnecke@kolektiva.social · 5 pts · 236d (2 replies)

@schalken @PugJesus is jesse Ventura the former wrestler? Or somesuch?

schalken@kolektiva.social · 8 pts · 236d

@niedlichenacktschnecke @PugJesus Yes! Wrestler, actor, conspiracy theorist, and Governor of Minnesota.

MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 236d

Yup

Quill7513@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 236d

virginian here

keep it. that flag didn't represent us when it was flying over our state. especially in my part of virginia support for the restored virginia movement and the union was high. the daughters of the Confederacy started remixing history as early as the 1880 to manipulate people into misunderstanding their own family legacy.

the virginia legislature's conservative position when jesse ventura was governor was the result of a century long project to disenfranchise, gerry-mander, and manipulate people out of having any meaningful support for progressive causes. we are still pulling out of that to the point that this year we had to choose between a Black nazi and a CIA agent for governor

Rights to culture cannot be sold. This is a bit ugly.

If we must return the benin bronzes you should also return your result of thievery.

That being said fuck justifying todays racism and separation by something that's more than 50 years in the past.

Microtonal_Banana@lemmy.zip · 8 pts · 236d

Minnesota should burn it.

groet@feddit.org · 4 pts · 236d

I think i agree. But i make a distinction between objects of cultural and artistic significance and symbols of hate.

If Germany wants a hypothetical giant golden swastica that was taken by one of the allies, then I'd be fine with their refusal. However I'd also be fine with them returning it if it is displayed in an appropriate way.

If they want to display the convederate flag in a museum where it is put in context and educates the visitors about the atrocities of the slave states then I think it should be returned. If they want it back because its "ThEYr HerRiatAGE" ... fuck their heritage.

what

Gladaed@feddit.org · 2 pts · 236d (3 replies)

Benin bronzes are the records of the history of the people in Benin.

They currently reside in western Museums, since they came into possession of the colonial overlords. Sane people consider this injust.

PugJesus@piefed.social · 3 pts · 235d (2 replies)

No, I know what the Benin Bronzes are, I'm not seeing the connection to the contemporary war-flag of a rebellion that was captured in the course of a literal battle.

Gladaed@feddit.org · 1 pts · 235d (1 reply)

Yes. But celebrating non compliance feels to close for me. It's not worth compromising ideals for.

PugJesus@piefed.social · 4 pts · 235d

fucking what

Gladaed@feddit.org · -3 pts · 236d (4 replies)

You must not plunder cultural objects in war. Just because you don't like their ideals doesn't make it right.

HasturInYellow@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 236d

Yes, there was only one flag. Irreplaceable cultural object.

Come the fuck on. The south is just butthurt that the north has proof they beat their asses.

Eat shit and die mad racist cunts.

rainwall@piefed.social · 5 pts · 236d

They didnt take a cultural artifact. They took a flag that their enemy was waving at them in the heat of battle. It was a weapon of war used against them.

It only became a cultural artifact because they put it on display after the fact and made it one for Minnesota. Why would Virgina have a right to Minnesota's culture?

PugJesus@piefed.social · 4 pts · 235d

... it's a battle standard.

Quill7513@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 235d

the southern cross was not a cultural object. it was a battle flag designed for the confederate army of virginia to identify itself in the field of battle as being the confederate army of virginia. when a union battalion defeated a confederate army of virgina battalion, they would take their battle flag as a symbol of defeat just as if the confederate army of virginia would take an american flag off a defeated union battalion.

if you really think the southern cross represents virginia heritage and culture, you've been sold a set of lies by white supremacists. the true history of virginia is that the majority of residents did not support the confederacy, only the majority of property holding voters (slave owners) supported seceding, and even then enough of them didn't to create a new state that seceded from virginia to join the union.

further, if you think this symbol represents all of the south that is strict revisionism. this flag represented one army within a seditious "nation" that existed only for 5 years. please stop carrying water for racists. it makes it harder for people like me who grew up in the south with the truth to speak truth into future generations.

Quill7513@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 236d

tell you what. when virginia shuts down red onion, minnesota can start thinking about treating us like we've moved on from our disgusting confederate legacy.
