I remember reading this article! Short version: they have 'fad phases' just like humans! About 10y ago, one got semi famous for putting grass in her ear, which then blew up among the others she lived with. Then sometime this year or last, the fad returned with a new twist: a different orifice!
Chimpanzees also display signs of culture among groups, with the learning and transmission of variations in grooming, tool use and foraging techniques leading to localized traditions.
