The collectivos predate the Bolivarian Revolution and are often to the left of the government on various issues. Calling them "gangs" is literally just accepting the racist framing of the western media.

The title says "Liberal newspaper", that's quite enough information to me to assume that the use of the word "gang" here is racist slander.
However, I acknowledge that not everyone has a lot of experience reading this kind of media critically from the perspective I'm discussing, so I'm accepting that you were mistaken and weren't being racist. /genuine

Props for owning up to it. In the future, I find it helpful to refrain from speaking on topics you don't really know much about until you're willing to stand on that initial claim. Being able to admit fault is already a great step, but to go further it helps to reduce the number of times that that's even called for.

The racist framing comes from a racist liberal publication, so we know when we read it that it is untrue. Therefore, the group of people being accused of being a "gang" look cool to us.

To clarify, I think the positive spin here is for us to acknowledge that the article's framing is racist, but that WE can read it without perceiving being accused of being in a "gang" as an automatically negative thing.
I'm not sure if I'm expressing this very well, sorry. I think it's like how you see people who commit justified acts of resistance often being called "terrorists" by the media, so among leftists "terrorism" no longer has an automatic negative connotation because we associate it with resistance. However, we understand that the intent from the media in using this term is still to convey the negative connotation.
