Arrests and aggressive tactics by ICE and the Border Patrol, many seen on viral videos, have intensified the frustration and fear among residents.
Congress needs to move to abolish ICE, defund the DHS, impeach Kristi Noem, and push for prosecution of those involved for levying war against the United States

Fuck the military, but at least they pretend to have rules constraining their actions. These are terrorists.

Tbh the governor should deploy the MN national guard to discourage ICE from existing in the state

Its not clear at all whose side they would come down on.

They have all of the gear, but none of the discipline of the military.

The main problem is mission, not training.

True, which is in some cases a surprisingly low bar to limbo.

In what sense is this "like a military occupation," instead of simply a military occupation?
Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 240d
That is the sentiment expressed in the full quote taken from the article. I suspect they didn't lead with "this is a military occupation" because it's not actually a military occupation, and I doubt they want to appear like they're expressing the sentiment that it is, choosing instead to simply emphasize that it shares some aspects with an actual military occupation (which is accurate).

Just because the US doesn't legally consider it a military occupation doesn't make it not one. But yeah I can see why they might not want to put that in the headline.
Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 240d
I more meant that... like, no, it just doesn't fit with any definition I've seen of a military occupation.
An invasion, attack, terror campaign or etc. are all better fitting descriptions IMHO - a military occupation is a fairly well defined concept and one that just does not fit what is currently happening in Minneapolis. For casual use I can understand why someone would use it, but if I were writing an article about this I wouldn't want to imply that I personally think this fits the definition if that's not the case.

I've learned something from you. Thanks for the clarification.

In the sense of prioritizing access over truth, as the NYT does

The US military is far more competent than any ad hoc citizen militia will be. People are intentionally using nonviolent civil resistance to limit how much ICE can do until Democrats can hold power again
Montagge@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 240d
So we're fucked because Dems have done fuck all when they get in power. Those dumb mother fuckers still think this can be fixed from within the system with no major reforms.

We need to be actively pressuring them to act. Right now, they're largely in favor of cutting ICE's budget sharply. That's something they can do with even one house of Congress if we elect a Democratic majority next year.
A bunch have come out in favor of impeaching Noem.
The kind of prosecutions we need require executive power and willing police and prosecutors
Montagge@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 240d
Those are okay starts but neither of those fix the main issues.
CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 240d
Until they actually take some actions, their thoughts and "in favor ofs" are completely meaningless and all but worthless.

Congress! And they're supposed to set limits on executive powers.
newthrowaway20@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 240d
Is this the same Congress that gave ICE its budget?
Good luck getting them to do anything useful.
