I can't really picture her as Lara, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
Feels a bit like casting Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.

She's a good actress tbf. I'd watch the movie if it got good reviews though.

Yup. Wish they would cast people that actually looked like the characters instead of purely based on celebrity popularity.
We used to have unique and interesting actors portraying characters with actual personalities and human qualities.
Nowadays every show and film is just some popular pretty person surrounded by slightly less attractive people and none of them have relatable personality traits unless you are an egomaniac.
Going back to watching shows like Father Ted or Keeping up appearances really shows you how far we sank. Funny characters with actual personalities and conflicts that made them relatable.

She's popular?

When are they going to hire someone with the muscles Lara should have?
I'm fine with unrealistic body standards for unnaturally talented characters, but at least make it the right unrealistic body standard for what the character does!

I don’t remember Lara Croft having muscles, just big tits.
MotoAsh@piefed.social · 5 pts · 218d
Yea, the unrealistic standards have been around a long time.
Even most art of Red Sonja (1973) is drawn far more "sexily" than realistic, and she's far older of a character than Lara (1996).
Of course both were created to leverage sex appeal, but my point is Lara Croft has still always been exaggeratedly skinny.

Not big tits. Triangle tits.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 217d
the polygon tits of history.

What were your thoughts on Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft?
MotoAsh@piefed.social · 6 pts · 218d
Same. She was and still is crazy skinny for most any action role.
artyom@piefed.social · 2 pts · 218d
Why should she have muscles?
MotoAsh@piefed.social · 10 pts · 218d
Play the games. She's acrobatic as hell.
artyom@piefed.social · 2 pts · 218d
I've played the games. You should try having a look at a female acrobat.
angrystego@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 217d
You're right, I saw many acrobats. They have muscles but still appear very skinny.
MotoAsh@piefed.social · 3 pts · 218d
Yea, they're all shorter than and more muscled than Lara, at least floor gymnasts. Any gymnast is more muscled than Lara has ever been canonically represented. (at least ones pulling off anything close to similar)
artyom@piefed.social · 2 pts · 218d
They're not "muscled". Lara can't do anything about her height anymore than you can. She's not a gymnast.
MotoAsh@piefed.social · 4 pts · 218d
If you don't think gymnasts are muscled, then you're simply too braindead to understand my critique in the first place...
Notice how my original comment was about how she's too skinny. I mention height because it has a huge impact on how the gymnasts look: Being short requires proportionally less muscle to pull off the same stuff. That's why floor gymnasts are usually short as hell, so they're flinging around even less mass. It's important to understand real life if you're going to compare.
I'm not saying she has to be some muscly shortstack. I'm saying it'd be nice if an athletic female character was represented as having an athletic build. They do it all the time for guys. Why does every female character have to be the most cliche variety of 'pretty'?!
She should at least look like she could do one pullup for how often she's, you know, pulling herself up in the games...
angrystego@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 217d
The male characters are often way too mucular though. It's also not realistic, they look like body builders.
snailboy@leminal.space · 1 pts · 218d
Idunno man, Sophie's looking pretty ripped in this photo.
MotoAsh@piefed.social · 3 pts · 218d
Not having fat is not the same as having muscles.
scytale@piefed.zip · 7 pts · 218d
I'm honestly surprised, she looks the part. The question is, can she act well enough to carry the role past the visual?
Alchalide@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 218d
You probably need glasses.
TempermentalAnomaly@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 218d
Agreed. Anything more than 350 polygons is a betrayal of the original.

No

I watched every season of GOT and never saw her act once. She's so.... wooden is the only way I can describe it.
MotoAsh@piefed.social · 2 pts · 217d
Most if not all of that was from the character. She was the stuck up big sister always trying to act proper, especially after her mom uh.. died.
Kraven_the_Hunter@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 216d
Her acting hasn't been much different in the other things I've seen her in. It just worked out for the GOT character.
Codilingus@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 218d
That promo photo of her is promising. I'll definitely give it try, hopefully its good!

Dear Sophie,

If you really want people to forget how they butchered your debut show, now is your only chance.
Wear the real Lara Croft costume.

God speed to you!
