Yeah, I'm in the process of getting Home Assistant set up so I can shitcan Alexa altogether. But my brane don't work good and it's all a bit confusing. And also we have a loooooot of smart plugs.
Good thing is, you can go in stages. I started out many years ago with wifi bulbs/plugs through Google, then Alexa (because echo dots went on sale super cheap once). Then I got a Hubitat and started moving things over to Zigbee/Z-wave/local Wifi, i.e. light bulbs got switched over when they burned out, new switches and plugs are local-only, etc. then upgraded my homeassistant to a raspberry pi. I still have Alexa speakers, but Nabu Casa is developing a smart speaker that can be configured to run fully local, so I'll probably be getting a few of those soon-ish and cut out one more bit of Big Brother at least.
I had a clapper. It would turn the light on if I coughed just right in my sleep. And the subsequent cursing at it didn't turn the lights back off either.
I recently moved and my new bedroom has several light switches. I've placed my bed in a way that I can switch off the light with my foot while lying in bed. I love it so much.

The techbro future is shitty and bleak, but man, smart lights are the best things ever.

You can do offline automation too, so you don't need to worry of bigbro

I use IR remotes plugged into lamps, they're better than direct overhead lights anyway, easier on the eyes
