Tbh I don't think Microsoft's fault-rate has actually gotten noticeably higher post-AI.
They were already putting out bad patches causing widespread issues with regularity for well over a decade. They slowly transitioned from "customer experience is key" under Ballmer to "move fast and break things" under Nadella.
I do love what Microsoft has been doing for Linux adoption though - more slop, please!

Yeah, there was a lot of these types of headlines with Win 10, especially in the beginning. It was a shitshow at first. It's what pushed me to Linux at that time.
Even then, the main reason why XP also was very popular with many was the utter shitstain known as Windows ME. Some figured out how to set it up right and with what hardware, otherwise it was the worst Windows, even with XP's own issues (concerns over obsolete-ing "perfectly fine" hardware, the UI was very divisive, stability problems, etc.).
There are public payboxes here running Arch Linux with Openbox and uxvt-unicode for some reason. Source: I witnessed one turn on a couple of time. It was Windows XP: Home Edition in 2019 for some reason.
Just one more data centre, bro, just one more DC, and all of that will be fixed, bro, just two more DCs, poverty will be gone, bro, trust me, bro, let them build three more DCs and you'll get the best Windows experience in history, bro, like, bro, just four more DCs and they'll solve world hunger, bro

Difference is that Windows 7 was out before XP support was dropped, so people could just skip over Vista. They don't have that option with 11.
