I’ve seen a kid at the supermarket pop the top off of one of these bad boys and down its full contents, crunching through the mass of gum’s solid outer layer audible from half an aisle’s length away. Not a safe solution with kids around.

😋 delicious microplastics

I didn’t mean it like that, but the mental image sent chills down my spine. No, this sort of gum usually has a crunchy outer coating like an m&m, which I heard.

Shit, I don’t think I could fit one of these things in my mouth. The sort of snake child that could do so terrifies me.

Most people don't realize today's chewing gum IS plastic. You can buy chicle gum tho, which is made from tree sap, hopefully people get wind of it and it catches on. The heart disease just caused by chewing gum is insane to think about, but people have no idea.

Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 220d

The article above mentions natural chewing gums and indicates that they release a comparable plastic load to synthetics. I’m altogether too sleepy to parse the source document, though

Same way my grandad quit smoking. Dad used to slip horse hairs into some of his cigarettes so when he'd go to take a drag he could never be sure if he was going to end up with a throat full of horse hair or if he picked a lucky one. Scared him straight, he never smoked again.

Supplanting a smoking addiction with a low-stakes gambling habit, very clever.

Idk, seems like a variable reinforcement schedule to me. They are typically more effective at building lasting behaviors.

I think this would just get you addicted to gum while tapering you off nicotine (assuming you decrease the number ofnicotine gum pieces).

RustyNova@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 220d (2 replies)

Isn't gum better tho? I'd still see it as a win

ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 220d (1 reply)

Oh yeah for sure. Just make sure it isn't sorbitol or you'd spend the same time on the toilet that cigarettes would shorten your life by

sober_monk@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 220d (2 replies)

I'm not sure this works because you don't chew nicotine gum like regular gum. I think you release the nicotine by chewing, so you munch on it a few times and then let it sit for a while.

I tried them but I couldn't make them work. This start-stop chewing drove me nuts, and whenever I didn't pay attention, I chewed on it too much and got woozy. I ended up going cold turkey with a shitton of regular gum.

Once the gum is in the hand, you know what it is gonna be

volvoxvsmarla@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 219d

Wait what? Really? I didn't know they worked that way. I ended up biting tiny pieces off and chewing them (often together with a normal gum) because I couldn't handle their strength.
